We always have looked forward to coming to the market during our stay on the peninsula. I was in the wine section and my mask was below my nose. Instead of simply asking me to put it up, he SCREAMED at me. I was upset. I went to pay for the items and tried to explain that I had a note from my doctor. MORE SCREAMING! Said he didn't want to see the note. Didn't want to hear what I had to say, but was screaming so much, his mask fell below his nose. A simple kind request would have been sufficient. Whether because of the pandemic or some other reason, Peninsula Market has slipped quite a ways in the past few years. The stock of canned foods, wines, and vegetables is still good, but the supply of freshly baked bread is gone, the daily lunch specials are not very good (we had cold hot dogs on our one visit) and the deli counter supplying cold cuts and sliced cheese is no more. I hope they can bring some of this back eventually. read more

Great small grocer if staying on the peninsula. Many homemade foods like ribs, chicken salad, hummus, etc. Large variety of baked items. Homemade ice cream stand inside. The Apple Pie ice cream is amazing; they crumble one of their pies into vanilla bean ice cream. Not even that crazy for Apple pie and loved this. Bottle/can deposit machine in back, but only for beverages purchased there. read more

Well let me tell you this. If you need just about anything you forgot for your trip, stop here. So what's impressive is that you really don't know what else you need until you walk in here. Wine selection is on point. They also have a deli and pizzeria. The smells were incredible. Artisan breads were a plus. If you want to cook out there is a great selection of grill-able meats, poultry and even seafood. Then your basic grocery needs are covered. Beer selection is better than expected too. Now don't forget gas when you leave especially being on the peninsula you won't have to drive back to town. Which would be a pain. Staff was very friendly and I want to go back and grab a different beer from a Michigan brewery tonight. read more

Had to visit since we were right next door at Pennisula Grill for lunch and it looked like a cute country store. Upon entering we saw a large display of various local items, i.e. chocolate covered cherries, dried cherries and blueberries, salsas, etc. They have a very nice selection of items, from speciality to every day. Convenient but expensive place to get gas and non-perishable food. Don't trust anything from the coolers - especially dairy. Pizza used to be good but is now nearly twice as expensive, lower quality and frequently unavailable. For the same money, you're better off going to one of the peninsula wineries or restaurants. read more

This place is a a gem when you are staying on the peninsula and need items. Sure it's more expensive but that is to be expected. The convenience of saving myself from having to spend an hour or more I just travel time to get somewhere else is worth the cost. They have always (I have been coming here for 10+ years) had a clean store with good offerings for a small grocery place. 99.9% the service was on point with only one time I can remember walking away not happy with how I was treated. The sticky buns (usually only available on weekends and likely only in the summer) are amazing but you may have to get here early for them. I am usually only a regular summer visitor but found myself here in the dead of winter. Knowing the treacherous travel that could await I am so happy that they are close by for a whole grocery shopping experience or if I just need a few item! Stopped for a bottle of water and did not have a mask. We walked the store for 10 minutes and when we were waiting to pay she handed us a baggie with a mask for $1.99 plus tax and said nothing to us. We asked her what she wanted us to do and she was very snarky. Why wasn't this done at the time we entered the store?? They are making a killing on a face mask that costs them ten cents! Not sure what's happening at this market. Boy has it changed, and not for the better. The manager of the market seems not to know how to speak to her employees. This isn't the first time I've witnessed this kind of behavior while in the market.While shopping there, I heard her being very rude to the kitchen help. If you have a problem with an associate, take the associate to the side. Not right out in front of the customers. The place looks unkept and looking like it's had its day. Sad to say. Hope this is just a little bump in their road. My family and I live here 6 months a year. I've noticed this Market has been changing a great bit. Lots of change over on help. I know that summer is official here when I get to shop at Peninsula Market. It's the ONLY store on Old Mission Peninsula (I don't consider the General Store, it's a tourist trap). I have discovered so many great local things at the market, from Osorio salsa to Buchan's blueberry ice cream. If you head up to Old Mission make sure to pop in and check the local and house made goods. They have a great selection of beer and wine and they make a mean roasted chicken. read more

The word "market" led me to believe I would be presented with a multitude of fresh, local produce. What it ended up being is nearer to a convenience store with some, granted, nice little features that set it apart. Prices are almost all slightly inflated, and the selection of fruits and vegetables, while plentiful, wasn't quite as fresh as I would have preferred. An adequate place to stop should you only require a couple items, otherwise I suggest the full ride into Traverse City. read more

I was surprised the first time I came in here. I thought it would be kind of a rip-off convenience type store that is often found where there are a lot of tourists and seasonal residents. Not the case. There is a good selection of groceries at reasonable prices and, even better, great baked goods and specialty items. I LOVE their breads and sometimes stop there just to pick up a loaf. I'd like to give a big thank you to the manager @ this market. Two days ago I stopped in to ask if he could make a beef pot pie(I wanted 4)with stout beer. He said he didn't regularly make them but would do that and have them ready by Wednesday. Today my husband went to pick them up and he found 4 (regular pie size meat pies). We found this market charming until a run in at 750 AM on a sleepy Sunday morning. A rude hat wearing man gave his customers crap about leaving a car at the pump after filling up. Rather than asking us to move it when we walked in to get coffee, he rudely scolded us at checkout. Next time pay attention to the sign. He's serious.
