Lovely historic hotel with lots of wonderful wood & tilework. We were not planning on staying in town, but after a heavy rain, our destination was inaccessible. We were lucky to find accommodation for the night. The lobby was stunning with deep woods, a large fireplace, comfy furniture. My son loved the accents like an old mailbox and a princess-style rotary lobby phone. Our room was a decent size. I was impressed with the height of the door--it must have had a transom window at some point in time. The bathroom was super cute with clean white tiles, a spacious shower, and a relic from another time--a hole in the wall for used razor blades. My grandmother's bathroom used to have one of those, but my son has never seen one and was fascinated. The vintage features really make it interesting to stay in places like the Wells Hotel. They have an elevator, but we opted to use the stairs as they were also beautiful in red carpeting and lined with rich woods. Breakfast was included and served in an equally beautiful space. The staff was so friendly, the food was great and the location was wonderful for walking around town. read more

I stayed here because there was a restaurant across the street and this place had old school charm. Dave Cox was my check in person. Very nice and informative. He's been there for 20 years. They had a decent morning breakfast. They have a lounge area but I can't remember how late it's open until. The room was nice enough. The only downside, is that my room was noisy from the "Main Street" which is route 6 and a main thoroughfare for trucks. I always bring ear plugs with me and so it was not a major problem. We stayed at the Penn Wells Hotel in Wellsboro, PA, while exploring Leonard Harrison State Park and its central attraction, the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, about ten miles outside of town. I enjoy historic hotels and have visited many of them around the country. This one was of a late 19th Century style, built in 1869 just after the Civil War, and a major stop on the road between New York and Chicago. While nothing like the Waldorf Astoria, on a smaller scale it has a charm and aged vitality that is palpable. The lobby is classical with stately sitting rooms with large hearth and fireplace, and large American flag constructed of red, white and blue glass bulbs. A much larger dining room is in the rear, where elite dinners and receptions were its stock and trade. Still a significant parlor and kitchen for this community; and for us, the place to have a decent breakfast as guests of the house. The upstairs rooms were a mixed bag. We were in two of them, and found that their somewhat worn expressions were appropriate for their true age, but still offering a degree of comfort that reflected their origins. Plaster walls with long windows overlooking either Main Street, the inner courtyard or back parking lot, kept the noise from adjoining rooms to a minimum, while allowing good views of streetlife or the surrounding mountains. We ended up in Room 316. It had a bedroom, sitting room and two bathrooms, making it very easy for us to settle in. The porcelain sinks were older vintage with separate hot and cold faucets. The hot water was scalding (only made that mistake once), so I learned to wash with cold water to avoid burns. No stopper to allow mixing. The shower was a tight squeeze, but manageable with a little patience. The queen bed was less comfortable that hoped, but we were able to sleep well enough to recharge overnight. The carpet was passed its prime, and really should have been replaced with wood floor rather than more carpeting to provide a reality of a floor that was safe to walk on with bare feet. Although not mentioned by the other reviews, I found the dim hallways spooky, and actually had chills down my back on occasion. This is definitely a lodging where ghost stories could be told. Friendly spirits from a Victorian Age, but perhaps brighter lights and open windows would alleviate the sense of dark heaviness about the place. Nonetheless, a worthy stop on your road to wherever life is taking you. read more

A Simply Wonderful Experience! Arrived in this wonderful small town in north-central Pennsylvania to meet up with family from the Lehigh Valley. A great experience getting there on Friday Afternoon just in time to experience the high school homecoming parade. Kids were supporting the Wellsboro Hornets; tossing candy and even handing out Pigs in a Blanket wrapped in foil! Had an awesome time with the family over the weekend and will definitely return here again. The Penn Wells Hotel is located right in the center of town across the street from the local department store. Yes, on Main Street! Upon arrival, most of us had rooms on the top floor and had great views of the nearby mountains. The hotel was clean and well appointed. Although a bit dated, as with any historic hotel, management worked hard to make sure the facility was in great shape and had modern amenities. The rooms were clean and spacious, however, some of the bathrooms can be quite small. Remember, this place is well over 150 years old. The hotel dining room serves a nice selection of cuisine (albeit a bit pricey, but costs have gone up everywhere,) and has a good wine list. They also have a nice bar with a rustic six foot wide fireplace and mantel that looks like it would be awesome in the wintertime. A real nice perk is the all you can eat breakfast included each morning. Eggs, sausage, bacon, the whole spread. Be sure to check this wonderful place out if you are ever traveling in this area of the country and especially during the fall leaf peeping season. read more

Anyone contemplating staying at the Penn Wells Historic Hotel should be aware of what they will be getting, and not getting, to avoid being overly disappointed. It is a late 1800s hotel with rooms updated more or less to 1900s, often early 1900s, standards. We rented a tiny room with a queen bed and adjoining bathroom. No closet or other way to hang up clothes. Insufficient space for hanging towels in bathroom. Sink with separate hot and cold faucets, but hot and cold water fortunately combined in tub/shower. No coffee maker or refrigerator. A microwave oven and ice maker are in a utility room on the 2nd floor; the front-desk graciously provided paper cups useful for heating water in the microwave. Only one small elevator with a cramped 4-person limit. Finding parking in the tight spots next to the hotel can be difficult, particularly because people not staying at the hotel patronize the restaurant in the hotel during the evening and for Sunday brunch. We did find our room to be clean and well maintained. Carpets were in good condition. The lobby floor of the hotel has wonderful historic décor. Aside from the enjoyment of staying in historic surroundings, a potentially compelling reason for choosing this hotel is that it is located in the center of Wellsboro's business district with shops and restaurants, and there are not many alternatives. (The Lodge, also operated by the hotel can be considered.) Guests at the hotel are treated weekdays to a complementary buffet breakfast weekdays and a more sumptuous brunch on Sundays, the latter also available to people not staying at the hotel. The weekday breakfast was adequate but not impressive. Oddly, various food options (e.g., yogurt) were not all presented at the beginning but brought out over time. The Sunday brunch includes a food preparer to make custom omelets. The brunch uses timed tickets, so if you do not make room reservations directly with the hotel, consider telephoning the hotel in advance to specify when you would like brunch. Interestingly, the room price for making reservations though Expedia was significantly less than making reservations through the hotel's own website. We do not regret choosing the Penn Wells, but certainly would not want to stay more than a day or two. read more

My husband made the reservation for me and I will never stay this hotel ever again. I understand that it's old and the room I was in is extremely small but for $172 a night I don't expect to have a room that has wallpaper pealing off the walls green gunk and hair building up in the bathroom sink and tub and my room looks suitable for a junky. It looks nothing like what is posted on their website. Totally disappointed. I can get a king suite at the Holiday Inn for $103 a night that is in way better shape and three times bigger with so much more included. read more

The Penn Wells was a grand hotel during its time. If you want to step back in time this is the hotel for you. It still has all the original features. The tiny room was musty with no closet to hang clothes or hooks and a small bathroom that is dated. The street traffic is constant all night long. No coffee maker or fridge. There were rusty roofing nails on the floor on our room when we checked in. The pool is actually down the street so bring a cover up. The continental breakfast has the best coffee otherwise very very basic. read more

If you like staying in places with history and character, this is the place for you. As you enter the lobby there is a hint of the history that this place has. Smoke free facility that still uses old fashioned room keys. Our room was small but well laid out. The bathroom has antique wallpaper which I loved. The dining room was filled with old time photos. They are numbered and a sheet is provided with info on each picture. We had an amazing dinner at a decent price. Their dill salmon and crusted haddock was delicious and well prepared. Continental breakfast gave you hot and cold choices. Their muffins are baked at the hotel and were so good that I ate two with my eggs and sausage. read more

This place has an interesting history. After a long day of traveling and leaving a hotel that was unsanitary, I called his place last minute for a two-night stay at 11:30pm. I can't remember the name of the girl that helped me, but she was extremely friendly and able to book me for the two nights I was in the area. I'm not sure about all the rooms, but the only complaint I have is the carpet could use replacement. Otherwise, the staff was incredibly friendly. If you're looking for a clean place to shower and sleep, this place is great. If you like history, this hotel has lots of it! Read the bio of it in the binder that's in the room. My room was in the corner, and a bit on the small side, it could be rearranged so you can get between the bed and the TV stand better. Otherwise, this was plenty for me. I was just glad they had a room available for the nights I was in town and they were clean. read more

This place is cool. 150 year old hotel still in operation. I used to come here as a child with my parents. The hotel has been improved a lot since then, but still has the old charm. In the hotel, every step the floorboards creak. The stair, hall, room. Its great! The room is slanted slightly as the building has settled over time.. Cool. It is slightly musty. Hey? Is a 150 year old hotel. The concierge gave me a triple room. 3 rooms combined. They used to be 3 separate rooms. Combined it is an apartment. Excellent food and nice staff. This place is so comfortable and classy; an especially homey place for a winter meal. (Wood fireplace!) White linens and clean settings every time, also the fanciest ladies' room in town. We just had the best Valentine dinner ever here. Come into their bar just for a cocktail and appetizer for a low-key unwinding. NOT a very modern place, so don't expect Sports Center on LCD and automatic soap dispensers. The furniture is antique and so are the faucet heads. So tired of hearing poor reviews because people come expecting a sterile, modern hotel. Nosthagic hotel. There's an unpleasant smell that welcomes you at the entrance. The rooms are clean as they can be given that the carpet has needed replacement for some time. The bathroom shower had mildew. The beds had divots and the pillows were stiff. The shower water was warm at best. The air conditioning was very loud. The doors only had the key lock and no way to secure the door while inside. I know it's old but come on!!! read more

8/26/2013 We were staying at an adjacent property, Sherwoood Motel, which does not serve breakfast of an kind. So we walked over here and partook of their breakfast buffet. It was a limited buffet, scrambled eggs, sausage, and a variety of home made muffins, and breads you find at breakfast. A good breakfast. Of course we paid, but anyone pretending to bei staying at this hotel could have walked in and had some breakfast. read more

This is a tourist attraction although there is not a lot to do in the town of Wellsboro. We came to Wellsboro for a friend's wedding and the selection of places to stay were limited due to the rural location. The hotel totally nails the old world charm from the front lobby, dining area, and even the rooms. I was shocked they were offering single bed rooms, but because of the 150 year old history it makes sense. The rooms are ok! The carpet is old, the TV is outdated, and the air conditioner hardly pumped cool air into our bedroom. I had clothing that I had to press for an event and we had to go all the way downstairs only to drag up the iron and ironing board. I will say however their complimentary breakfast is awesome and it was accompanied by a live jazz performance. If I were to visit again I would have stayed at the Hamilton 12 miles outside the town. The $140 dollars for our queen size bed and thin walls was not worth it, but it was cute to say the least. read more

Just had a casual dinner in the Penn Wells Lounge (not the main dining room). We waited 50 minutes for a burger, a sandwich, and a TINY fish fry. We told the waitress nicely that we had to leave within an hour. She came back 45 minutes later with "It'll take awhile for the burger." (This was a burger on the menu, nothing special). My husband had to leave to go to a meeting. I think they thought we were tourists (we are NOT; I can see my house from the Penn Wells) and were eagerly waiting on some local prominent business people. We live next door to the owners and will give them our opinion - I know they don't want people to experience this. read more

The room is nice, but it's completely overshadowed by the unfriendly and unaccomodating staff. They even refused a late checkout to participants in the town's half marathon. I'd consider doing the race again, but I'll never stay here again. read more

From the moment my daughter and I walked in, this was a wonderful experience. I don't recall ever feeling so welcomed at a hotel. Our room was clean, beautiful, and SO comfortable, and I wish I could give the restaurant more than five stars. We stayed on a Sunday night, so the breakfast buffet the next morning was included in our room fee, and I was pleasantly surprised by how extensive it was. Great location, too: The hotel is in the middle of the town within walking distance to everything. I'm already planning the next trip to Pennsylvania - definitely will be staying at The Penn Wells. read more

What a disappointment. I wanted to take my wife to a nice hotel for her birthday. Passing through Wellsboro, PA, we stopped for the night at the historic Penn-Wells Hotel. We were told they had 1 "upgraded" room left. We took it for $119. We were advised that the hotel was old and the rooms are small. The room was small, but clean. It had a hot water radiator in the room and 1 in the bathroom. The radiator in the room was room temp, but that was OK because the radiator in the bath was HOT. It made the bathroom like a sauna. The front desk suggested a fix that didn't work. It made the whole room hot and we turned on the air conditioner to counteract the radiator and we closed the door to the bathroom. So we had the a/c noise all night PLUS we had periodic pipe clanging from the radiators all night! I understand old and historic, but this hotel needs at least some modern updating. 1 star for the lobby and lounge. read more

The positives. Good location. Charming lobby. Room was ok - clean. Bar had decent beer selection. Food was average. We stayed for a family wedding. No other reason to be there. Small town thing was nice, for about 10 minutes. The negatives. Small town thing meant this was nearly the only lodging option. Not much incentive to prioritize customer service. Customer service was, at best, abrupt. Some might have found it rude. Some of the staff in the restaurant were friendly but others were surly. Rooms were clean but small. There was no place to hang clothes except one hook on the back of the door. This meant the only comfy chair got covered with clothing leaving no where to sit. Only other amenities was a cheap, flat-screen TV and Wi-Fi. Not even a coffee maker. Coffee was available in the morning in the lobby but who really wants to have to keep shlepping downstairs for more coffee? Basic impression is that guests were consuming a product and service was doing the bare minimum. Glad I don't have to go back. read more
