I had a very pleasant experience yesterday, changing my state of residency from New Jersey to Pennsylvania. My STRONGEST my strongest advice is to read read read and be sure you have the documents that are needed for your type of transaction. I advised this due to personal experience.,lol. Generally speaking, allow several hours. Don't try to squeeze an appointment in before work or at lunchtime. Yes there may be times when it's not busy, but you don't wanna take that chance. And finally, when you get up to the desk inside the door be the first person to say good morning or good afternoon or anything pleasant to the person behind the desk. It's magical you will see and continue doing that with each and every person you have to encounter. Overall, my visit was about one hour and 45 minutes. After the initial check-in after I received my number, I had to see an agent to review my application that I filled out after checking in at the front. Upon Kia's review and payment, I was then sent back out to the waiting room to wait for my turn for photo and photo drivers license. I did not need the real ID. I will say when I got to the photo desk, I was not acknowledged by the agent, but as soon as I said hello, my name is Sue what is yours , again It was magical! The facility is nice and big and spacious. The people work long past the closing hours and are polite. NEVER go on a Saturday. You will wait FOREVER. Other places like Pottstown are less crowded, or just wait until a weekday. read more

I visited today to obtain a same day Real ID. The staff was very patient with those of us who were unfamiliar with the process. The wait was long about 2 hours but comfortable. My daughter went there today to take her drivers test and had the rudest unprofessional road test examiners. He walked up to the door and just starred at us, no hello, good afternoon. Just started saying what he needed. He was in mid 30s unkempt beard. I asked him if he needed a paper and said no after asking him twice. It was a strange attempt to intimidate a young girl. When she got back said she failed for speeding. I said speeding and he said yes she was going 15 maybe twenty in a parking lot. I said really and he gave me a stare. I said wow i don't even see a sign and he turned around and left. No goodbye and he had no identification or name badge on him. This DMV has horrible customer service and i have witnessed numerous staff treating people bad! Avoid this place. Pennsylvania does nothing to make this place better. read more

Not a bad PennDOT location. Reception desk was helpful and got me checked in with a number quickly. Keep in mind this is one of the few locations where you can get your REAL ID over the counter so it tends to be a busier location. With that said I was in and out in about a half hour on a Saturday. I have definitely been in less organized PennDOT locations and waited way way WAY longer so have to give this one credit for efficiency. read more

This is the worst DMV I've ever been to in the last 15 years. It wasn't back when I was younger, but if you've ever seen Zootopia with the sloths at the DMV then that about sums it up. Not all of the employees are like that, but the lack of consideration for their customers is unbelievable. If DOGE ever gets around to reviewing the DMV centers, maybe things will get better. I'll volunteer to be one of the "Bobs from Office Space" when I retire to go around to government offices and ask, "what would you say, you do, throughout the day". If you decide to get a real id do NOT go in person to the Norristown DMV. I got there around 3PM and there was a line about 30 people ahead of me but I decided to wait. Now mind you , there was no organization or direction by any DMV personnel . No number system to set your place, no info on where to go for photo license or real Id or driving test. Nothing but a line of people hoping they are in the correct place. I finally get through the door at 3:50 and present my documents, birth certificate, marriage license, drivers license , car registration, voter registration. In 1978 I got married and at the time it seemed like a good idea to hyphenate my maiden - married last name.This is how it appears on all my documents with my address, that I've been at since 1980, except on my passport my maiden name is listed as my middle name, no hyphen. The check in person noticed the difference and went to check with her boss to resolve the issue he recommended that the drivers license be changed to remove the hyphen between the names. Seems to be resolved. Three hours later I am called to gate eleven , where the man goes through the same maiden- married name problem over and over again. Refuses to talk with the original check in woman that got the issue "resolved". Brings his manager to gate 11 , while walking up saying , " I don't want any emails, reviews, ambulances ( I'm 73 so I guess heart attack possibilities exist) or problems. He refused to ok this REAL ID because although my address was on most documents , my passport had my name without a hyphen. So, I sort of lost it on tweedle dee and tweedle dum.... got all my documents and walked out . I had no problem with my passport ever before. Avoid this place , do it online if you want the real ID. read more

This must be the worst DMV in the entire state of PA. I was dreading coming here to get my photo taken for license renewal. I remember going other years and waiting forever. But since I am only working half days for the summer, I went there at like 12:30-1. I thought there wouldn't be that many people there at the time and it would be faster. Wrong. I remembered last time when I was there it seemed like the entire staff took lunch all at the same time, as a good half an hour or so went by without them calling any numbers. I was afraid of the same thing happening this time. I got there and it didn't look too crowded but my number was about 15 numbers away. They called 1 number and then I was waiting 15 min before they even called a number again. I heard one of the workers talking about taking a lunch so I guess everyone was on break again. Then I realized that they didn't do the Real Ids on Monday's so I just left. They should have that written on their website or something. Tried going back the next day around 2:30 and was very crowded, it said a 3 hour wait on the board. I was going to see how fast it moved before leaving, in case the time was inaccurate. I went up to the one worker at the table and gave him my documents for the real Id. So apparently the birth certificate issued by my hospital wasn't good enough they said they needed a state ID. Wasted another day. I ended up going To AAA to just get my photo taken there for a regular ID not the real ID. They were definitely a lot nicer and more efficient. Probably in and out in 15 minutes. I will prob always go there and never go to that DMV again it's horrible. I have friends that go to other ones in the area and I never hear them have to wait that long. This dmv is a joke. read more

I arrived an hour ago. I have been seen which is excellent but what concerns me is I brought all necessary documentation. However, Daniel the man who took my documents and entered my information into the system informed me I'll have to wait and he'll try again. Allegedly the office in Virginia isnt receiving my data. What does that mean? It means the transmission didn't go through. Ohk. Daniel has called a few people to his counter. What I'm perplexed about is the lady he served after me was gone within minutes. He said he would check gain and he claimed he tried it several times already so now I'm waiting. I hope he has the common courtesy to try again before he calls another customer to his counter for service. I came here because it was supposed to be a location that services customers quickly. I'll admit it's raining perhaps that's the issue regardless I've taken my picture and I want to leave knowing I've accomplished my goal of officially transferring my drivers license so I can register my truck. Initially I gave three stars but had to change it to two stars because Daniel seemed to be ridged in his initial efforts and his demeanor more importantly he wasn't friendly. I even tried to have casual conversation with him and his responses were real dry. I expect any government agency employee to be friendly and courteous because their job description requires them to be helpful. I'm sure that will be the case for me today, then and only then will I change the rating. Maybe they don't care but Yelpers DO! I was eventually called up to complete the process and he still as slightly hesitant nevertheless I was able to take my photo. The lady who took my picture was friendly and funny. This is MOST WORSE place I have been to. I came norristown penn dot for new driver license and they process my paper work but then saying I can't get my renew license because I am .50 cent short but when I called they said it is $30 for renew license. Now they wants .50 cent in money order.. staffs are extremely rude and manager wasn't even in. And saying that I need to go store to get .50 in money order then they can give me new license.. I even offered .50 in coins but they said no no no I need money order. Wtf what's wrong with cash? Why it need to be in money order?? Running around to get that stupid .50 for that license. Will not recommend this location ever! Go to different DMV! stay away from this location. read more

When rescheduling a driver's test at the Bensalem facility in Bucks County had a three month wait, I called the number on the scheduling letter, and was able to get a new date at the Norristown, Montgomery County, operation for three weeks later. What a difference! Not only that, but their tester was friendly and actually encouraged my new driver to take her time, and not worry. He wanted her to succeed. So different than the attitude in the other place, where it was obvious the man with the digital pad could care less. Yes, there was a wait of about an hour until we were reached, but there was only this one guy doing all the testing, and he was as thorough as he was pleasant. In the end, he gave a passing grade, and congratulated her on a job well done. He took the time to express his appreciation for how well she had parallel parked (only 2 moves), and that she also needed to always be attentive to all the conditions around her. Point well taken. He escorted us to the right desk inside the center, and from there, a temporary license was issued in a matter of minutes. The permanent license would arrive by mail in about two weeks. The rest was all celebration! It is not often that a bureaucratic experience like a driving test can be called "humane," but that was the case yesterday in Norristown. "Lee" was all that and more. He deserves an award and a big raise. read more

This was the WORST experience ever. The examiner barked orders at my son at the beginning of the test. He was rude when he told me to leave the car in an obnoxious way. He then wouldn't let my son finish the test because he said he didn't stop for long enough at the stop sign. This examiner was inappropriate, rude and hardly the model employee you would want your young driver to deal with during a test. I was taken aback - I drove off. My fault, I should have asked for the manager and a proper road test! I will never go back there - only went because it was the first available time slot to get a road test. I loved Oregon Avenue Penn Dot and can't wait to go back. This examiner was also rude to another man getting his motorcycle road test. read more

I've been here quite a few times in the past 3 years for various services so I feel I can give a more thorough review vs one stereotypical bad day at the DMV. The older workers at the counters tend to be nicer not necessarily customer service super stars but cordial. But the " youngish" maybe under late 40s employees are quite salty especially now with covid restrictions. I went another time with my kid to get their drivers license test. There were a lot of cars in front of us but we weren't in a hurry. We noticed an obvious pattern with the white male tester (he's still here btw). It looked like to us that he failed all the brown and black people. Remember this is my opinion only. The black male tester had passes and fails across the rainbow. I went a second time with my other kid and saw the same pattern. The facility is nice and I haven't had too many horrific experience to call this place horrible but some of the attitudes from employees have left me with a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Took my son here today to take his drivers test Had a 1245 appointment arrived around 1220 and didn't start the test until after 1. Only 2 instructors and 1 went out for a break or something. I was warned about the instructor we had that he fails everyone and it was true. Not one person taking the test made it past the first stop sign including my son. I watched and he made the stop and waited for about 5 seconds before proceeding next thing I know he's pulling around and the instructor is getting out of the car telling me that my son made a rolling stop seriously? I made an appointment to go to malvern instead next month I advise the same for anyone else cause Norristown isn't worth going back to read more

A half hour to get in the door, then three hour wait once I checked in and got my number. Not acceptable. Only 5 out of 10 counters were open to assist the 70-80 people in the waiting area. I went to the Markley St. location and if I could give it zero stars, I would. The wait on a Saturday morning for a name change was approximately three hours. The wait wasn't the worst part; everyone knows you wait a long time at the DMV. The real issue was the horrific rudeness of the employees. Two of the men at the kiosks were the most unprofessional, disrespectful employees I think I have ever encountered anywhere. If you need to go to the DMV, I strongly suggest you go anywhere OTHER than the Norristown location. read more

Overall this was not a bad experience. When I got to the people taking my photo however a young man referred to me as Leon. I am an 85 year old man. I would expect him to call me Mr. Leon, or Mr. Donovan. I explained to him that I was appalled, beings I am an older man. The respectable thing to do would be call me Mr. Donovan. The young man who was very nice and explained to me that it is required of him to call me by my first name according to his bosses. I don't understand what is going on with the world. Is it it's too much to expect people to respect their elders? I told him that the PennDOT people did not do that. But the photographers are subcontracted by another company. I just find this ridiculous that it is not expected of anyone to respect their elders today!!! We cannot use pronouns or anything because we don't want to offend gay people or transsexual people or any other type of people, but it is OK to offend elderly people????? read more

I'd give 0 stars if possible. This is the worst DMV experience I've ever had. Brought my daughter on her 16th birthday. We were excited that she was 5th in line for her permit test and only waited 20 minutes to be called. She passed her test and have been waiting for TWO hours since she passed. "Write your name on this paper and wait." After 1.5 hours, we tried to ask how long it would be and Tony said "Write your name on the paper." My daughter said "I already did, I was wondering" and he cut her off and said "then go wait." At 2 hours I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told they were too busy and I'd just have to wait because it was crowded. They continued to check in more people 35+ by the ticket count) to take the permit test even though they weren't clearing out the people who'd already passed the test. It appeared that the employee who was clearing people out went on his lunch break and Tony couldn't be bothered to do anything but check in more testers. Finally got called up when the guy finally came back to the desk. No "sorry for the wait" or any other acknowledgement. Happy birthday to my daughter...exactly how she wanted to spend 2.5 hours of her special day! read more

Just awful. I've always thought that but never was steamed enough to put it into writing. Line was long outside. Moved very slow. We (my son who is 16 and I) were here for a replacement camera card because we never received it in the mail. Not our fault Penndot somehow messed up. After multiple phone calls and emails I was given directions from Penndot to come here with his stamped permit and they can generate a new camera card. The one worker lady came outside and was going through the line to see what people were here for. No doubt trying to thin the line out. She gets to us and says, this stamp is good for 120 days so give it until then to get card in mail. What?!?! Wait until it's expired to deal with this bs??!! I said Penndot already emailed me and told us to come here. The camera card was issued and should be on the system.She flat out lied to us. Or doesn't know what the hell she is doing. Beyond frustrating. Thank God I didn't listen to her- only wish I caught her name. read more

My boyfriend just left this location to take his driving test, the instructor he had must have been ready to fail him from when he first got in the car because he had an attitude from the start. When it was time for my boyfriend to park, the instructor made snarky comments, then told him he failed the parking test because he didn't tap the curb when he got in the spot then continued to say he noticed he was using the barrels to guide him, rather than the curb (I'm not sure how that's relevant in the matter when someone is parking and how he could assume that). When they went on the road he insinuated that my boyfriend barley stopped at 3 stop signs (who doesn't stop at 3 stop signs on their driving test?!), then he commented that the speed limit was faster than he was driving, THEN when it came time for him to make turns he waited until the very last second to tell him to turn. After the instructor told him he failed, he suggested going back to our area to practice parking more. The instructor did not give us his name or write it on his permit paper. The employees inside were informed and said they'd take action, but either way we came all the way out of our way (about an hour) for this type of service. Pretty disappointing. read more
