Lovely well maintained boardwalks cross 2 streams and a muddy section. The Elliot (0.8 miles) and Tibbitts (0.7 miles) Trails add additional lobes to the walk with additional viewpoints. Do mind the privacy of the house at the beginning of the trail. Limited parking across the road from the trailhead for about 15 cars maximum which is easily exceeded on holiday weekends with good weather. Beware of rogue waves on the slippery rocks--the coastline is notorious for being merciless to those who fall in.

There was a good amount of signage. BUT My biggest issue was they split the difficulty into only 2 levels. Absolutely bullcrap. That was by far the most difficult trail I've ever done. There should've been at least 3-4 levels of difficulty. If I had know it was that intense, I never would've gone. While the amount of signage was good, it was too vague. I read that it's 2.2 miles, but based on the signage I believe it's about 2.5 miles. The wood plank bridges were unsettling as heck to cross. The tree roots are sticking out of the ground and they grew out weird directions so lots of places to trip. Lots of areas where I had to jump down and strategically plan my descent otherwise I would've broken an ankle for sure. This is NOT for beginners. Maybe not even intermediate I'd say. I'm not in the best shape, but I've always been able to do intermediate level trails. The scenery at the very top was absolutely not worth the hassle. Definitely have to be careful at the top because it's absolutely a hard drop off cliff with lots of pointy trees and rocks. I'm giving a 3 because even though I hated it, it's probably a good trail for advanced to expert hikers. I need you to tell me if it's going to be that intense BEFOREHAND

Rocks sea and…read morepheasants Lobster Cove Trail is a short trail that goes across Monhegan Island. Not a long trail but one that has a whole lot of great scenery. The entire island is known as a bird watchers paradise so you will probably see all kinds of different birds, some flying, some swimming and others just casually walking right in front of you. The trail is dirt with lots of rocks, roots and little but sometimes steep hills. During much of the year the trial is pretty eroded and after a large storm might resemble a stream more than a hiking trail. Like virtually all trials and roads on the island this one ends at the ocean. Of course there are incredible views, fierce and ragged rocks and even the remains of an old shipwreck or two. The fog rolls across the island extremely quickly so it can be sunny and clear one minute and all fogged in the next. Lobster Cove Trail is a wonderful way to get to see some of Monhegan Island, especially it you don't have a lot of time to spend on the island. No matter what time of the year or day you go, the scenery is guaranteed to be spectacular.

It's about 20 or so acres and leads through some very pristine, lovely and buggy woods down to the Cross River. The Cross River is tidal and gets low, stinky and yucky when the tide goes out but this is the best time to go looking for shell fish. We even saw some fellows dragging some boats filled with clamming equipment through the woods. Quite a sight. It is a beautiful area in the winter when the deep snow makes snow shoeing and cross country skiing pleasant. Not the longest or most strenuous hike and definitely a place to use copious amounts of bug spray in the warm weather. But it is a wonderful preserve that will keep the tidal area pristine and wild for decades to come.

I parked on their off road parking area and started my ascent. The path is well maintained, peaceful, and well marked with cairns when there is areas that would otherwise be confusing to which way to go. While the top wasn't as scenic as many of the mountains I have accomplished over the years, it was a nice place to sit, relax, and reflect in the quiet.

It's about a .5 mile loop around a parcel of land that was donated in 2000 to the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust. It's the highest point on Georgetown being 259 feet above sea level. We decided to check it out because of the promise we saw when researching that we'd see "stunning views of the coast" (like Monhegan Island, Seguin Island, and the Gulf of Maine). It's unmarked from the road, so if you're driving down Route 27, be careful not to drive past it (when your GPS tells you you're there, you're actually there... just look for the incredibly small dirt pull-off). The hike/walk itself was much more uphill than I was expecting, but was beautiful - from the dense forest at the bottom to the beautiful sprawling lichen at the top and the wild blueberry bushes - throughout. We're also suckers for "rock art" (as we call it); which are, as you probably know, just piles of delicately balanced rocks acting as trail markers. This hike/walk had them every few feet on the path to reassure us that we were where we were supposed to be. Loved this - and love that the people using Higgins are a) leaving everything as they found it and b) practicing carry in/carry out (the mountain was in pristine condition, not a single piece of litter anywhere - hurray for humanity on this one!). When we reached the top, we didn't see any ocean though and it was a clear summer day. We both assumed that "views of the coast" meant actual water views. Not the case - at least not in the height of summer. Maybe when the trees are less full you can see more, but our scenery was a thousand shades of green tree tops. Still beautiful, but not what we wanted. I would absolutely come back here maybe at the peak of, or just past, foliage season for the views and a quick jaunt in Mother Nature.

While driving up, down, and around the coast of Maine this summer (because sometimes you just have…read moreto take a road trip with no destination in mind) we found ourselves at Five Island Lobster Co. Looking for parking before walking around the nearby rocky coastal ledge, we ended up at a spot near a tennis court and a small woodland area with a pond called Ipcar Natural Preserve. According to a nearby sign, Georgetown "acquired these 33 acres from Maud Steussy in 1973 as part of the Five Island Waterfront Properties for the enjoyment of present and future generations. The town voted in 1994 to name the preserve in honor of Adolph Ipcar, chairman of the conservation commission, who obtained grants from the state and federal governments and led the drive for donations, advised and assisted by Ed Pert and Lloyd Pinkham." We sat for quite a while on one of the benches just absorbing nature. While everyone else behind us streamed past this peaceful spot for their steamed lobsters, we watched the ducks be ducks, frogs eat flies, and tiny fish dart back and forth - all existing quietly in their element while nearby a swarm of tourists stuffed their faces. The irony. It was such a nice way to spend time after driving for so long. The absolute definition of a hidden gem, especially if you like nature. Remember: that's all this is (a bench overlooking woods and a pond... sometimes that's all you need, though, right?). Bring a book, bring your lunch, and enjoy the outdoors.

On the plus side, there are plenty of baby spruce and pines growing in the sunny patches where the blowdowns occurred. In terms of terrain, the trail is on the easy side of moderate. The natural scenery is excellent -- it looks like a pretty healthy, yet old, patch of forest. But I rated it three stars because the trail is poorly marked. It's not well cleared compared to other open spaces in Georgetown; some of it is marked with blue blazes, but in other parts it's marked with surveyors' tape. Parking is in a smallish town lot.

I found this trail today on Google Maps when looking for a place to run near my hotel. The…read moretrailhead itself is located down Tyler drive and has its own parking lot with more than ample parking. It is a blue blazed trail with offshoots of at least yellow and orange which seem to link back up to the main trail. It is an easy to follow trail although there are a lot of roots which makes you pay attention and if you are moving at a decent clip, not see as much of the scenery as you would like. In the short distance that I used it for it had a lot of features like bridges across creeks, boards across wet spots and even a little set of switchbacks to get you heart going in a short but steep little climb. During my run I saw lots of tire tracks from mountain bikes and a couple of mountain bikers as well as a lady walking her unleashed dog. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I really enjoyed my easy paced run here and only wish that my schedule had more mileage for me on the day.
