You need to listen to the 1 star reviews. These folks care much more about taking money from sick people than they do helping them. My kid was involuntarily hospitalized and missed an appointment. They weren't able to call anyone, not even me, in order to cancel the appointment. Even though the situation was explained as soon as they got out of the hospital, there was zero compassion for a young person, with no money, who was obviously failed by them and ended up in the hospital. These absolute criminals still extorted my kid for $160 missed appointment fee. They pray on young, sick people and you should stay as far away as possible. read more

This women is terrible at her job. I was a patient of hers for only a few months, I stopped seeing her because instead of listening to my concerns and giving a proper diagnosis(ended up being DID) she dismissed it and put me on anti-psychotics - if you are put on them without having a psychotic disorder it makes everything worse - which caused a suicide attempt. Where she then called me stupid, never gave me an emergency meeting such as is required for that situation and said the reason was she "never knew" even though her scheduling team was clearly told. read more

This lady should be out of practice. She doesn't care about people, she's a pill pushing heartless person. I'm currently seeking legal advice after my daughter was in her care for last couple years. During this time she never even spent more than 10 minutes speaking to my daughter about how she was feeling just prescribed higher and higher doses when my daughter said meds weren't helping. She was habitually late for appointments but if you are late or miss one she will charge you $150. She refused to speak to me because of her skewed idea of what the laws say. I worked in healthcare 10 years, I know what HIPAA protected, I just wanted to give her input on what was going on with my daughter without asking anything from her. My daughter is now inpatient and lucky to be alive honestly. Hopefully she will finally get the help she needs, I will forever feel guilty I sent her here first. read more

I cannot even give Penny Tanner a rating; she was that awful. Besides the horrific cancellation policy, Ms. Tanner lacks in bedside manner and plain interest in you as a patient. Likes to push the pills and doesn't like the therapy. However, my insurance always gets billed for 1 hour therapy sessions plus 15 minutes for meds. I am asking my insurance company to review their payments to Penny Tanner for fraudulent billings. This is funny; I received a call this morning from Penny's office to reschedule my appointment. I was unfortunately a patient of Penny's. When I first saw her I was pretty happy and healthy, however after being given multiple meds and gaining 40 pounds I asked her to please help me. Instead she prescribed a med that caused all kinds of problems including a trip to the ER. My family doctor took over immediately and removed the excessive meds Penny had prescribed that were making me a zombie. I lost the weight and then was properly medicated for Anxiety. Yes, Penny that's all it was. Yet, you wanted to diagnose me bipolar stating you believe everyone is a little Bipolar. Let me tell you we are not. Maybe that's why you were banned from the Military Bases because you over prescribed drugs and diagnosed everyone you saw as Bipolar. I remember that because I had family working in the Psy field. I was informed all about you. These days my life couldn't be better. I am healthy, happy, and in good shape again. I only take one med for anxiety and I couldn't be happier. With Penny's treatment I was home sleeping 18 hours a day, gaining weight, and becoming more and more isolated and unhappy. Don't be afraid to get a new doctor, well in her case she's not a doctor, so maybe that's the problem. She is a nurse. Do you want help from a nurse who can prescribe drugs or do you want help from a qualified MD or DO or Psychiatrist. Why see a nurse for such complex problems or in my case a very simple problem she couldn't identify. Maybe that's because instead of being a highly qualified Dr. she is a nurse. To me that's dangerous. In addition, the few times I was there it was interesting how often her secretary would make calls and identify herself as Penny Tanner. I personally overheard calls to doctors, Banks (I guess she was buying a horse ranch back then), and others. Please really check with your Primary care doctor before you see this nurse. WARNING: NEGATIVE 10 Stars!! This woman has unscrupulous billing practices. I have been charged a $100 cancellation fee by this office, even though I have not signed any contractual paperwork and called four days in advance in my cancellation. I was advised by my primary doctor office (who is also the Director of Franciscan) to avoid using Ms Tanner, so I cancelled the appointment with FOUR days to spare...yes....FOUR day cancellation is what I gave this woman. I have now received the bill stating I never cancelled. This is the classic bait and switch and I am quite sure I am not the only person she does this to. I am now filing a complaint with the State Medical Board AND Blue Cross Value Options. Ms Tanner will then intimidate, harass and then threaten to send you to collections. I actually have BILLING proof with Verizon of her office calling me back to confirm cancellation. The attorney I hired stated that I could sue her in court...but when you think about it, how much energy do you really want to give this kind of person who is so clearly unprofessional? She is just flat out unethical in every sense. FACTS: 1. If you request a phone discussion. she will charge you. 2. If you do not give a 24 hour notice, you will be charged a $100 fee. I and my family have been with Penny Tanner for over 10 years. We have always found her to be caring and understanding to what we need as a family and as individuals. Her office staff and environment are very kind, welcoming and helpful. Dr. Tanner does run a tight ship and expects us to keep our appointments which coincides with being accountable for our treatment and continued wellbeing. It's taken me a while to get to a point where I could write this review. Honestly disgusted with Dr. Tanner. I was seeing Dr Tanner and a psychologist every week for anxiety, depression and PTSD, and I was also significantly overweight. I saw a cardiologist who recommended that I double down on therapy and try hard to come off the medicine for my health, so I relayed the message to Dr. Tanner. Dr Tanner LAUGHED IN MY FACE and, while laughing stated, "oh honey you're far too fragile for that... There's no way you will ever be able to live without them." What kind of doctor would think that behavior would EVER be acceptable? Since that incident I have lost 120lbs, worked hard with my therapist and seen pretty awesome changes. This woman is whacked and needs her license revoked. She treated me horribly, and stated I'd be on meds for the rest of my life--a second opinion revealed no medication is needed. She said I had multiple ailments that I did not agree with, as it appeared she loved writing prescriptions. Her cancellation fees are ridiculous. When trying to obtain billing statements they did nothing but give me a run around. In 2014 I had horrible insurance and Penny Tanner was the only one that they would pay for. She held me hostage and required a positive review if she was going to continue to see me. Here is what actually happened: She stood me up for our first appointment. She charged me when I was late buy a few minutes; it was traffic. I needed medical marijuana for arthritic pain when I disclose that to Penny she dropped me like a flaming pile of Sh!t. I now have a new knee, much less pain ( smoking less pot) excellent insurance (Tri Med) and excellent 420 friendly care from a professional that works well with veterans. However the damage that she caused to my daughter and my youngest son can never be undone. She might be better than nothing on the other hand you might be better off letting your mental health degrade until your on public assistance and then going to something like navos. read more

I was a patient for 4-5 years. The receptionist made a scheduling error, mistakenly putting my appointment for mid-September on the August calendar. I went, because I got an email reminder. I was 10 minutes late, but called ahead and left a message. I was told the next patient had already gone in, and I'd have to pay a missed appointment fee (which is hefty, the whole reason I went even though it was their mistake). I asked to have an opportunity to discuss it with Dr. Tanner, because the receptionist wasn't receptive. Dr. Tanner would have known this was not the correct date, as she had instructed them to make the appointment for 2 months out. A couple of weeks later I had to ask for a prescription to be rewritten because I needed an early fill for a work trip. For 2 days the receptionist told me I wouldn't be able to get the script in time (I called on a Tuesday and the trip was on a Thursday). I was told I couldn't get the prescription rewritten until Monday. 6 days notice? At the very last minute after several phone calls arguing the necessity, I was able to go get the prescription, and the receptionist asked for the missed appointment fee. I reminded her that I had requested to speak with Dr. Tanner about the scheduling mixup. I was handed an envelope with the prescription and another envelope with a note stating that Dr. Tanner was resigning as my mental health provider, "effective immediately". Apparently because rewriting a prescription due to a short notice work trip and wanting to discuss a "missed" appointment that popped up a month early before having to pay $150 out of pocket disqualifies me as an acceptable patient. Negative Stars!!!!!!!!!!! If you enjoy a detached, emotionless, medication monitor, this gal is for YOU! In my first half hour visit, she prescribed a medication that had a severe interaction with one of the meds that I was already taking, even though she had been given a list of my current medications, this put my health in jeopardy! My MD had to call her to point out her mistake! Since my illness has involved being away from work, the FMLA & Short Term disability people required paperwork periodically, she will charge extra for doing this paperwork and, depending on the insurance company you have, it may not be accepted as she is NOT a Psychiatrist. The RN in charge of my case was told that Dr. Tanner charged separately for any phone calls or paperwork. This woman does not have an ounce of compassion in her whole body!! And, although she was late for every one of the four appointments that I had with her, there was never a 'sorry' or a 'thanks' and, you had better NOT be late for your appointment or you will be charged!!! They are also pushing a multi-level marketing product in the waiting room which in my opinion, is a conflict of interest! Our community has a shortage of Psychiatrists for sure but, keep looking for your own sake! This Ice Queen should NOT be in mental health at all! She has the personality of a rattlesnake! read more

Her billing practices are shady as hell. Saw her for a few appointments in March and April. Never received a statement or explanation for her billing practices at ANY time, and the receptionist said I should pay a $30 copay, and insurance would cover the rest. Today, MID SEPTEMBER, I received a statement of nearly $700 dollars... only AFTER I stopped going back to her. Evidently, she waited until July to bill my insurance, as well. There is no itemization of the bill, she charges differing amounts for the same length of appointments, just on different days. I received no counselling at her appointments; she even stopped taking notes and told me to suck it up. She's rude and combative. She diagnosed me with a condition, and upped my medication. After my blood pressure skyrocketed, I went to my GP and found out that she'd prescribed 50% more than the maximum safe dose. I also do not have the condition she diagnosed me with, it was clearly a ploy to keep billing me. Do NOT risk seeing this lady. read more

I was really happy with Greater Lakes Mental Health but needed to find a new provider due to an insurance change on my part so ended up seeing Mrs Tanner basically 15 min every 3 months so I could receive my medication. I received a notice in the mail this weekend stating I was being dropped from Mrs Tanner's services and would have to find a new provider. It caught me off guard after 6 yrs I feel she could have at least explained why? It couldn't have come at a worst time my mother in law is in hospice, I'm recovering from a heart attack and surgery which Mrs. Tanner is fully aware. My grandmother just passed two weeks ago and a close friend had a stroke last Friday. I'm running out of medication and have to look quickly for a Psychiatrist under all this pressure. Thankfully I had a good therapists at Greater Lakes and I learned some coping skills had I not already been diagnosed and already on medication at the time I was seen by Mrs Tanner I would be in a world of hurt right now. Mrs. Tanner doesn't listen to what your telling her, she grows impatient quickly and Obviously has little empathy or compassion for what your going through. I highly recommend you look else where shes okay in a pinch but not the long run. read more

Literally the WORST. If I could give less stars, I surely would. I saw Penny three times and refused to go back. Some time has passed so out of curiosity I googled her name to see if it was just me that had a negative experience and honestly am so RELIEVED that I am not the only one who has had a terrible experience with this terrible woman. I have major depression and when I reached out for professional help, Penny was the first "therapist" I tried. My appointments were way shorter than scheduled. She would ask me a few vague questions and blindly write prescriptions without telling me what they were or were for. When I did open up, I was chastised for my life choices and she would simply tell me I was acting childish instead of offering some real help on how to get better. She revealed some patient information about my dad, who also used to see her, during one of our appointments, in the presence of a UW Intern. Super unprofessional and insensitive. Don't see her. Seriously don't. If you have an appointment with her, cancel. But make sure your cancellation is well documented, carved in stone, and done five days prior to your appointment otherwise you'll be receiving some $100 fees in the mail. Penny, I hope you read these reviews and take them as an opportunity to either change the way you run your practice or retire. You're not helping people get better. You certainly did not help me. Office stuffed with overstuffed furniture. Have to fill out 10 pages of questions which is very difficult when you have add and anxiety issues or if you are in crisis. I will say I believe she did try to help but I don't think she knew what she was doing. She insisted I take drug that I had taken in the past with bad side effects. At one time I was taking 7 different medications. I started grinding my teeth 24/7 to the point they were breaking. I now wear false teeth. Now, looking back, I think it was a money thing. I was gone for a while due to to being hospitalized for physical illness. When I went back to see her she wouldn't accept me and refused to tell me why. My daughter was recently referred to her and was not impressed. Didn't go back. Dr that referred her has taken Penny Tanner off her referral list. read more

I have nothing but positive things to write about my two+ years spent under the care of Dr. Tanner. Coming off of a very jarring experience with a psychiatrist who spent less than ten minutes with me at all of our sessions, I was interested in finding an ARNP who would spend more time with me at my appointments. I found the staff at Dr. Tanner's office always very welcoming and friendly, remembering my name and greeting me as I continued on as a regular patient. I had two instances of waiting longer than ten minutes for my appointments, but based on the 20 appointments I went to during the course of two years, I would say it is rare to wait that long for Dr. Tanner. For me it wasn't a problem, as I know it was more a reflection of her taking all the time necessary to treat each patient rather than an issue of disorganization or overbooking. Dr. Tanner always treated me with respect from my initial, in-depth intake session to my regular med check ups. She is easy to talk to and always validated any concerns that I had. I especially appreciated the way in which she was able to describe how my medications would be working and the reasons for any changes in doses. She is great at relaying this information in a way that feels relatable and not overly grounded in scientific jargon. I found the sheet you fill out every time you enter the office to be very helpful, and think it is something that should be implemented in more mental health care facilities as it helps the patient look inwardly at their progress, goals, and/or concerns before each session. In terms of the billing practices, I never had any issues, and think that Dr. Tanner very clearly outlines her policies and is transparent in the office and over the phone with the potential fees that may be charged. I hope this review can sway others against believing the other negative reviews on this page, because I know that the high standard of care that she provided to me was instrumental in my recovery from a major episode and my increased level of stability in the past two years. read more

After seeing many doctors over twenty years and trying numerous medications I found Dr. Tanner to be spot on for the diagnosis of my mental health conditions that were affecting me, my family, friends and work. My life has improved 100%. Her approach is no nonsence and direct. I have missed a few appointment and gladly would pay her late fees. Three years ago when I first met Dr. Tanner I was informed of her cancellation policies and any costs associated with after hours phone calls. I'm sure if you were to try and get in contact with your family physician you would find the same after hours call fees would be billed and you would probably get the doctor on call, not your personal doctor. If you are struggling with mental health issues or maybe a family member is, I strongly recommend Dr. Tanner. Penny Tanner is the first doctor to correctly diagnose me. I have seen many doctors, psychiatrists and psychologists over a span of 25 years. None of which were any help until I found Dr. Tanner. Within half an hour of my first visit she had me correctly diagnosed and prescribed me with a new prescription that actually made me feel normal. I've never had a problem with her billing or administration and have always found her and her staff to be helpful accurate and cheerful. I have went through a few mental health providers, but I found Dr Tanner to be very helpful and professional in all her dealings with me. I have had 3-4 visits so far. I'm a disabled veteran and was Fee Based out and Dr Tanner got me in a timely manner. Her guidance and direction has been second to none. I also enjoyed her professional staff as well. I used to see this lady as a child at circle creek... I was about 6 years old. She would bribe me with candy and a dollar bill. She had me doped up on so many different medications. She traumatized me. Even had me institutionalized in fair fax. All while knowing my adoptive mother was abusing me. 17 years later and I will never forget this women. I still have nightmares about her. Out of curiosity I googled her to see if I was the only one who had such a bad experience & if she was still practicing.. almost 20 years later and I'm relieved to find that it was not just me who had such a horrible experience. @Kay P. The papers you first sign on your first appt it does state that there is a fee for missing your appt and being late to your appt. She does see alot of patients. Plus, everyone knows if you're running out of meds and going out of town for two months you would be there early for your appt regardless how far you live. Besides its your responsibility to keep up with your meds and yourself. My experience has been good. I've been seeing her for about a year now. I didn't come across with any problems with her. When I needed my meds she was able to refill it asap and mostly returned my calls promptly. And when she was going t be out of town she let me know. I would recommend her to anyone who needs help. I was a patient of Ms Tanner's last fall for a very short time. She was very condescending. Made a very quick diagnosis, started me on a medication for that diagnosis that made me feel worse. I am no longer taking the med and haven't had any issues since. I really wouldn't recommend her for people who need true treatment for a mental illness. Miss-diagnosis for 20+ years and am currently seeing her for the new diagnosis. I am better but struggling, much less of a struggle than the last 20 years.
