"Pipa" is the 4th name for this part of Brazil. Originally, it was called Orotapiry, or "White man's village." In 1626, the beach became known as Itacoatiara, meaning "the painted cliff", later becoming Ponta do Cabo Verde ("Green Headland"), and is now Praia da Pipa.
As recently as the 1970's, this was just a fishing village, but it was "discovered" by backpackers and surfers. Today, it is a small, cosmopolitan beach town, with restaurants of many types whose owners came from many foreign countries and decided to stay. There are hotels and pousadas (bed and breakfasts) for any budget.
Every time we come here, we stay at a different hotel and each experience is different. There is a lot of nightlife and visitors from all over the world. The last time we were here, I met travelers from Chile, Texas, Australia, England, Germany and all parts of Brazil.
