Ponta Negra Beach takes its name from the surrounding neighborhood in the city of Natal. The name ("black point") derives from the dark stones that are found along this beach. The beach is about 2.4 miles long (4 kilometers) and at its southernmost end, is bordered by a large sand dune (390 feet tall) known as Morro do Careca ("bald hill" in Portuguese). The waters in this part are very calm & ideal for taking a dip. If you like surfing, stand-up or kite-surfing, different parts of the beach are ideal for these sports. The turquoise water here is very clean.
This beach is also very popular because it is located near many hotels and pousadas, restaurants, bars & food stalls. There's activity here day and night. If you want, you can walk the length of the beach along its wide paved path or rent a bicycle.
Another reason for the popularity of this beach is the warm water--it's about 82°F (28°C) all year-round. If you're visiting the city of Natal, it will be hard for you not to find yourself on or near this beach, and you will be glad that you visited it too. read more
