The rice here is so fragrant and delicious! The fried chicken was solid, but I'm not a huge fried chicken person. The beef rendang was tender and the milk tea was strong. Service was fast and efficient, so no complaints there. You'll get in and out pretty fast during lunch. They have a pretty big menu at reasonable prices, so give this a try if you're in the area!

The beef rendang unfortunately was not that great and the beef was very tough! The anchovies, sambal and other condiments were spot on! The speciality which is the Kaya Toast was definitely a surprise to me, my in laws assure me that is authentic to how Singapore serves it. With big chunks of butter in the middle! I say this because out of the whole kebab, I only got a mouthful of kebab with sauce, and after that mouthful, the kebab just tasted dry (because it had no sauce). Now, I didn't want sauce oozing out of it's sides or anything, but I did want more than a teaspoon; especially with such a large portion size. When I was done, this kebab left me feeling so guilty. My beef curry wasn't quite as tender as I remember the last one, and my partner's ginger duck noodle dish had a hell of a lot of gristle in it to the point of it not being particularly nice or edible. So at the moment, I've got to give them only three stars for the food, but they keep star #4 just because where else can you get a curry at 2am?

Bistro Bakini seems to fall hard into this category of restaurant. I get it - Australia (and Melbourne) is a very expensive place to eat / live. That does not justify a $25ish small plate of bland risotto that I could have gone to A&P (that's Safeway for you Victorians) for and bought pre-made. I will give them this - their decor is nice and their manager was very personable. Have a drink or a coffee here and skip the food.

Bakini is located at the bottom of an apartment/hotel complex and is decked out in a very modern design. The music they play here is a mixture of chilled out jazzy songs and Spanish flamenco (think Gipsy Kings or Santos Bonacci [those guys that play the classical Spanish guitar on Bourke St outside of Myer]) which makes it feel very cool. The staff here are genuinely friendly and helpful. Over the past few months, I've gotten to know Andre, Renee and Stavros (although the 1st 2 have recently left) and I'd have to say outside of Pearl Restaurant in Richmond it's the best service I've ever received (note to self: write up of Pearl coming soon). When you sit down for a coffee, you get CHILLED water in a nice glass and a few biscuits.
