We both opted for the combo roast lunch which doesn't cheat you at £10.95 as it is a huge amount of food: ham, lamb, beef, roast potatoes, a variation on dauphinnoise potatoes, carrots and broccoli plus a giant Yorkshire pudding. They also brought extra gravy. Although I don't think I'll ever find a roast I enjoy as much as my family's, I really enjoyed this and thought it was great quality for a pub Sunday lunch. They had some nice (quiet!) background music playing and then switched to the Six Nations so are clearly making all the right choices! The view of the hill outside the back of the pub is beautiful and it's an easy drive from Stockport so I will definitely be coming back here. Inside it is lovely and the food is very good. If you don't fancy something how it is on the menu just ask. My Dad always gets his steak with gravy and a Yorkshire pud instead of peppercorn sauce and onion rings. Children are welcome too. Its a good place to know about if your planning a pub crawl in Stockport, a nice pub that does food. Just a little update they have a new menu. Or is it? There is instead a melange (mix) here at 54. For example, you have Onion soup and gruyere glaze to start, very French and an Eaton Mess for dessert. They do everything from lasagne, to kebabs to king prawns. There will be something here for everyone, I promise. Otherwise they serve hot chocolates, soups and sandwiches during the day like at lunch if you fancy sitting down somewhere other than your desk/ you couch. The prices are pretty lovely too. You're looking at about £15. Plus on Wednesdays and Thursdays you might be able to get a complimentary glass of wine. They sometimes have those skinny metal tables and chairs outside, you know if the summer, but don't count on it as its unlikely in bad weather (which is likely).

The layout is a little annoying for large parties- no tables will accommodate more than six or seven easily and there simply isn't enough space to be pushing and joining etc. Also, you run the risk on a Sunday of running out of certain meats so either there will be a hefty wait, as on my sister's most recent birthday here, or various diners will eat at different times depending on which meat they want with their Sunday roast. The carvery is good though. An ok amount of choice, but enough to satisfy most eager customers. The air is lively and chatty whilst being relaxed. Its a shame the owners of this bar/kennels dont encourage the same level of consideration from their customers. The barking was excessive, and nobody wants dog hairs floating in their drink.

The food menu here is all British staples ranging from sausage mash at about 9 quid up to fillet steak. Skipping a starter, I had the Barbary duck breast. The duck, whilst not badly cooked, I'd have preferred a little pinker. It came with some vibrant kale, and a deliciously cheesy dauphinoise "pudding". The treacle tart for dessert was nice too, though I thought it was weird that they didn't trim the rind from the orange slices it came with. The biggest criticism would be inconsistency over portion sizes. You can order the crumble and get a dessert that could easily feed 3 or 4, or a giant Eton mess, and others are just right or even a little stingy. The main courses had a similar problem: it makes eating in a group difficult. It's a shame that the ale choices are limited to mass produced stuff like Greene King. With so many decent local ales, you'd have they'd have at least one decent guest on. This is a pretty reasonable choice if you want some fairly well-priced food, and you're in the area.

When I actually entered the establishment, it was clear that the interior had been updated fairly recently. There is a nice, fresh decor inside, all while retaining nice natural period features and touches. Upon taking our seat at the table, I perused both the cocktail list and the food menu for the evening. I always take it as a good sign when I am spoilt for choice in a new bar or restaurant. Without a doubt, I had trouble choosing from the very appealing lists that I was presented with. After trying a few of the different cocktails on offer, I am pleased to report that each and every one of them was fantastic. As too, was the food that I ordered - and also the food that I cheekily tried from some of my fellow diners! Service here was courteous and friendly, without being too intrusive. In fact, I felt sorry more for them in having to deal with a table of 14 of us and they did so very competently. All in all, I had a great time here, and if I am ever in this part of the country again. I would certainly be glad to return here.
