We were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. Mauro was very welcoming and attentive. He helped us pick out a delightful bottle of Vino Bianco. When they take a bottle out for a customer, they immediately replace it off the shelf. I was intrigued with their pappardelle with fava beans and pork cheeks (guanciale) - it was so different and delicious. My husband savored his broad pasta rolled noodles stuffed with ricotta & spinach topped with tomato and basil sauce. We finished with a traditional Piedmontese dessert called Bunet (a decadent dessert of chocolate, amaretto, macaroons and Carmel). This is the place that my friend, an expat, goes to as his regular "go to". It's a bit more upscale looking than the other places in the area but that's not saying as much as it would if we were in the states, it looks may be lie the quality and taste of things. They make all their own baked stuff, seriously and while I'm not a flaky dough kind of guy it's good. They really shine though on their cappuccinos and for me their hot chocolate. As I'm writing in English, for Americans at least, keep in mind that Italian hot chocolate is nothing like our chocolate except for the fact that 1) it is dark and 2) it is somehow made from chocolate. All bets are off after that as I just have to say it is one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted that it's made of chocolate! Italian hot chocolate is more like a quasi chocolate pudding but with the flavor of a hot coco. As I happen to really like chocolate, especially the darker varieties, this is to put it mildly, heaven. The surface congeals and you need to stir it to break through to the more liquidy part underneath - well, well worth it. I am currently going through Torino's coffee shops, to taste their hot chocolate while I can.

The founder had the brilliant idea to start a chain of supermarkets offering only the best products from all Italian regions (from Piedmont's hazelnuts to Sicilian cactus fruit jams). The quality is the focus and, that's the whole point of Eataly. At Eataly you can also have lunch or dine, and most of the dishes are prepared with top quality ingredients from their selection. It is quite a new experience to have your food inside a supermarket. I was not so impressed by the food they prepare, it's a bit rushed, and simple but after all Eataly is not a restaurant, so fair enough. I'd give 3 stars to the food served at the table and 7 stars to Eataly's concept. That makes a total of 5 stars.

Two men rolled out the dough and added the toppings. A third was the master of the pizza peel (or paddle) and the oven. The dough is incredibly light and elastic. Generous pinches of flour are dusted on the working surface and the pizza peel to keep things from sticking. The toppings are fresh. The cheese is usually a creamy fior di latte rather than the heavier mozzarella. The wood fired oven is very hot with pizzas baking in only a few minutes. Some toppings like fresh basil are added after cooking. All pizzas are drizzled with olive oil before being served. The end result is an incredible crust and a more delicate taste than any pizza I've had before. Prices range from €5-€10, with most around €8.
