Place has what you need if it's there. They also have a vetco clinic for shots usually every Saturday which is convenient especially if you need them before Monday like I did a month ago. However....since getting my new pup, I've been here 4 times over the past 1.5 months and 3 out of the 4 times the cashier I am with...seems to have, in a way a high attitude or smarty pants comments if a question is asked. It's quite annoying but many of the other sales associates (the ones who really want to work and not ignore us people) are great! There are a few (many) who don't really want to talk to you or ask if you need help. Which is fine for me, but there was one time where I felt like I was chasing one of them because I couldn't find anyone else. It's also a great place to socialize your pup and a safe open way to also do it. I had a great experience with searching for products to help with end of life care comfort at PetCo on Old Seward HWY. Laurel gave fabulous customer service the day I purchased the items. She was excellent. Also, Tim and Rachel helped me return items I didn't use I had purchased just before my dog passed and helped me troubleshoot to make sure it worked. (I had several Petco accounts and they discovered this and found my receipt). Major props. Love this store. Also I have used their grooming - it is fabulous. I came here today hoping they would have my soft food for the dogs. They did at a very good price too! Usually I buy the Vital brand raw food for our dogs at Pet Smart, but they haven't restocked fully their refrigerator with the size I buy, the medium roll. They had it so very happy I have an alternative source and since it's in between Michaels and Gold Rush, when I need soft dog food I'll pop in there since it's convenient. read more

I took my 5 month old heeler pup in for his first de-shed and groom. The check in was easy and they had lots of patience when my puppy was clearly nervous to go with a stranger and leave me. When I went back to pick him up, I could see that all his nerves were gone and he was happy and comfortable with the groomer Brittany. He came back to me clean and full of treats (which I told them to give him many treats). Brittany said he was very well behaved and she had no issues. Can't wait for his next appointment with her. I will give this Petco some credit, it seems like they have put in the effort to hire some people who have some knowledge of their exotic animals. While here for something for my toirtoise, my and my fiancé made the decision to bring home a leopard gecko. While I was wary as my experience in getting my tortoise was rocky, I decided to go through with it anyway. The younger employee who helped us was very friendly and very helpful in answering any questions we had, and helped us with recommendations for our geckos setup. Even the tortoises they had seemed to be in better shape and have a better setup, which makes me so happy to see. This makes me genuinely hopeful that they are providing as much care to their exotic animals and people typically only do dogs or cats. read more

This store is a decent place to shop for the basics of pet care. There isn't much to put it aside from the other two pet places in the quarter mile vicinity. I'm giving Petco on Dimond a four star for one reason. The store is ok, they're out of stock too many times on various items. The reason I am giving this store a 4 is because they have one groomer my dog loves! No other groomer in Anchorage has been able to handle my dog the way she has. The loss of one star is the difficulty of contacting the grooming station and ease of scheduling by phone. I have to come into the store to talk to someone who is able to schedule me with my preferred groomer. read more

Beware of buying anything here that might be defective - they refuse to accept returns, claiming their "new return control system rejected you so there is nothing we can do." WTF? Very unhappy and will never shop at Petco again. I come here for special items for my pups. It's a very expensive option but sometimes necessary. I bought my dog a coat and it didn't fit. He has a very deep chest like a greyhound and I'm realizing that I'm going to have to make a coat myself since the last couple were not deep in the chest enough, but the length fit. There are bins and things on sale. I bought a yoda shirt for my mom's pup and it was $3 from the original $20. I tried to make an appointment to get my dog groomed and they wanted me to send them her rabies info. Nah, that's a hassle. Will come again. read more

Absolutely ridiculous. We are HUGE customers at petco. (I'm talking hundreds of dollars a month). Until now. We set up a bath appointment for our 14 year old husky mix about a week prior to the appointment date. To get her in we took time off work, and we got her pain pills from the vet. When we arrived for the appointment we were TURNED AWAY because she's over 13 years old. The staff was horrible, neglectful and rude. When I asked "why does your website not state that you don't groom dogs over 13?" The woman rolled her eyes and said "I don't know, our website doesn't have a lot of stuff?" I'm so disappointed in this company, and will no longer be supporting their business. Get your stuff together, fix your website, and hire better customer service reps. Don't buy a guinea pig Kathy has grown attached to and has taken care of! **STORY TIME** A guinea pig I bought from Petco, named Jamie, passed away when I brought him back for the 30 day vet guarantee when I noticed signs of lethargy, crusty eyes, and lack of appetite. Unfortunately, little man passed away end of October and my family has had a difficult time with that. Today, I went into petco for more guinea pig supplies when KATHY called me over to her station with the worst attitude. She blamed me for "killing him," accused me of "BREEDING guinea pigs" (mind you, I have 2 males that I bought from this same store and have their paperwork), and that I wouldn't be allowed to buy another pet from them again. She continued to accuse me of having poor cage conditions (to which I attempted to pull up pictures of my enclosure that she didn't even want to see). She wouldn't let us leave without attempting to make us feel bad or guilty and seemed like she wanted get a confession from me. She said Petco takes "special care to ensure their pets make it to a great home." Which is weird because when I bought my first GP from them, named George, I didn't get any calls, follow up, or anything to make sure that George was safe. If Jamie had died in my cage at home, they would still be unaware of it because I have never had follow up from them. What makes the situation worse is that I wasn't given any information as to Jamie's medical records, what his condition was, or what could have been done differently - which are things I would like to know as a Pet owner. It feels like Kathy branded me openly with other customers walking by in the store as a guinea pig killer, and that left me feeling guilty and worried about my other 2 pigs. Extremely disappointed with Kathy. Will only go there for a specific brand of Timothy Hay that they carry, but Petco fails to realize that PetSmart and PetZoo is across the street. read more

Over the past few weeks I've aquired a number of pets and have had numerous occasions peruse Anchorage's various pet stores. PetCo has bar-none, thr best selection of small pet/rodent products in Anchorage. They had 5 times as much availabilty as any other pet store in town of leashes, habitats, trail runs, hammocks, toys, kennels and water bottles, etc at the best prices (by far.) I went to 4 pets stores and bought everything at PetCo (except food, which I got at Alaska Mill & Feed because they have the best quality feed). Pet Smart didn't have squat. I mean like jack squat. PetCo smoked Pet Smart in every category. A few weeks ago I also got a 15 gallon fish tank kit with heater filter, stand, light, etc for on 75 dollars. I almost fell over when I saw the price. And the fish tank guy was really sweet and helped me get organized. My cashier even helped me get the tank out to the car. It was great customer service all around. Pet Smart can suck it... PetCo has earned my business by being consistently the best in town. read more

Lauren J should be avoided at all costs. Instead of admitting that my dog's groom was beyond her skill level she chopped of my schnauzers beard and banned us from returning because my dog yelped as she was being brushed. I have had 35 other grooms at pet I over 5 years. Not one of the other groomers has struggled. But because the incompetent Lauren J decided my dogs yelping makes her 'feel unsafe' I can't come back to any petco in Anchorage. Pathetic. I wish she had admitted her incapability BEFORE she chopped off my schnauzers beard, not chopped it, quit, and called my 20 min into the groom. read more

Both appointments have been scheduled for 6 weeks prior and they never answer the phone to reschedule. This is extremely disappointing as I loved the groomer that I would take my dog to. I called in for an appointment to shave my golden retriever. Which is 7 months old. Over the phone I was told yes, but not all the way down. Ok, bring him to his appointment. Come back almost 3 hours later. The groomer said almost done and was given the bill to pay. I come back to a not even close to a shaven dog. I asked to have his tail and ears shaven at least. As his tail, ears and the rest just looked trimmed.The groomer told me she can't and won't do it. I am glad the one time I had cash for a tip and was going to tip in cash until I saw the outcome. $75 and still need to find another groomer to get him shaved. I've had 2 Goldens before this one and know how miserable their coats can cause them even in our summers here in Alaska. read more

While waiting I'm watching the girls yanking on the dogs leg and yelling at a dog while she was grooming it. YOU WILL NEVER TOUCH MY DOG OR MY FREINDS DOGS. Don't recommend them for their grooming service! It's overrun , under staffed, over whelmed! They were taking care of walk ins for nail trimming over actual appointments which caused my dog to be there over 4 hrs and he still didn't get all his grooming needs met. Will never go there again! They denied him getting a hair trim bc he was anxious, he was anxious bc he was there almost 5 hrs, plus they messed up his appt and had to reschedule. read more

I brought my jack Russell in to be groomed. When I picked her up she her coat was cut uneven she is white and three of her nipples were cut and burned. I called the manger she said that white dog nipples change as they get older but I could bring her in and she would look at her when I arrived my dog did not want to enter the store so I did not make her go inside. I get my dog groomed here because there is one particular groomer with whom he (my dog) has developed a bond. I have always been impressed with the level of care and attention that this particular groomer gives to my dog. He is happy when he leaves & he always looks SHARP! That said, I agree with other commentators that I often see expired food on the shelves and the store isn't very appealing in general. But, the grooming salon always does right by me, so I will continue to frequent Petco Old Seward, for the grooming salon at least! read more

If it was possible to give less than one star, I would. This store needs to be reported and fined for animal neglect and abuse. Of the bettas on display, 25-30% are dead or dying from lack of oxygen. The other fish tanks usually contain dead fish as well. Last week they had an obviously ill/distressed canary on display, priced at $150. The next day, the canary was gone, probably dead from Petco's refusal to provide veterinary care. I then watched as a "male fancy hamster" desperately tried to drink from an empty water bottle. His movements were jerky and uncoordinated, probably due to dehydration. The animal enclosures (birds, ferrets, small rodents) are not maintained in sanitary condition and often have excessive fecal accumulation, which is unhealthy for the animals and not attractive to customers. This store should not be allowed to sell live animals. Period. read more

The store was fine until the check out. I came to petco for one simple purchase, a small rock for my fish tank. We walked in looked for a rock we like (with no help from any employees, no one even asked if we need help) grabbed one and headed toward the checkout. Upon reaching the checkout stand the cashier looked irritated, and angry that we wanted to check out. Then I went to give her a coupon I found on Petco's own website and she claimed that I needed the rewards card to use it. (NOT TRUE READ THE COUPONS FINE PRINT). She rolled her eyes and proceeded to finish the transaction. I didn't want to argue since I was in a rush and left. Ma'am you do not need to lie or roll your eyes when a customer has a survey. If I could rate them lower than one star I would. We took our Westie there for grooming and they did a terrible job of giving him a cut. I talked to the manager and they didn't charge me for the haircut. So I took him back, figuring they deserved a second chance since they were so good about not charging me the first time. When I picked up my dog the second time I could tell that something was wrong right away. He didn't seem to know me and was quite bewildered. I think that they put them in the drying cage for way too long. I almost took him to the vet, that's how concerned I was for his health. He is five years old and I've never seen him act the way that he was when I picked him up. He was completely lethargic. We have to put our trust in dog groomers and hope that they treat our pets well since they don't have a say when they come home. I would never ever ever ever take my dog back to this place, I think that they do not treat animals well. read more

I wish more people who had good experiences would write reviews! This place is obviously not as bad as these reviews reflect just based on the long, usually swiftly moving, line there is EVERY weekend. The folks working there are just GREAT! Ms. Laurie - the store manager - always takes time out to say hello to everyone and their dog; she even knows my dog's favorite treat (and quickly schooled a new staff member when he tried to give the cheap treats;)). The grooming is good too - the grooming staff are well trained and dog people to the core - they are also extremely timely. I gave 4 stars because some groomers are better then others, but regardless of the perfection of the hair cut - my dog always comes out happy with all of the groomers telling her goodby using her name. Neither me or my dog could ask for more- a big shout out to the folks out at this Petco - they always make my dog's weekend:)! read more

Awful. Tried calling them to tell them I was running a few minutes late for grooming appointments and no answer. Arrived in parking lot 5 minutes late and when I was able to get the first of 4 dogs out of the car and inside, the girl, who saw me struggling trying to get only one dog at a time, rudely stated..."You're too late. We already took other dogs and we can't take your dogs anymore. You can make another appointment, though." I couldn't believe her attitude!! I certainly understand that I should have arrived on time (when asked if I could drop them off before going to a meeting, they said that I couldn't bring them BEFORE the scheduled appointment time) . It was nothing short of a nightmare getting mine and the neighbor's dogs to that place (PETCO) and to be turned away in such a rude manner was unacceptable! I will never recommend anyone go to this location and I will tell my neighbors, friends and even strangers to avoid at all costs! read more
