As is common in small-town ski resorts in Austria, English is not widely-used or spoken. Thankfully, the servers knew English and was happy to help us with the menu. The place is not big and the patrons learn to maximize the space and be elbow-to-elbow with the people on the next table. They have outside seating, but beware ~ that's where the smokers eat, so not sure if that's going to be as enjoyable for the non-smokers. The first time we went, I ordered a simple ham and eggs, plus one of their freshly-baked breads. The bread was fresh off the oven and the ham and eggs were prepared perfectly. The ham kinda looked like bacon, so not sure if it's a cultural thing, or something lost in translation. Either way, I was very pleased with my order. Bonus: cappuccino is also cappuccino in German, so no problems there! My hubby got a face-sized chocolate-covered cinnamon bun, and a chocolate-filled croissant to go with it. Yes, he's a chocoholic, even at breakfast. While we were having breakfast, I noticed an order delivered to another table. It's on one of those tiered-trays that one usually finds on high-tea services. I asked the server about it and sure enough, it's a breakfast selection. I swear, if I hadn't already ordered my breakfast, and if I was still hungry, I would have ordered one of those for myself as well. So I saved it for our next visit. The breakfast tray has 3 tiers ~ one for a variety of bread, another one for various jams and butter spreads, and the third for a selection of meat and cheese slices. All for 8.50 euros! Can easily be shared by two people, but I wasn't sharing. And hubby went with a second round of face-sized chocolate-covered cinnamon bun. All in all, we were very happy with this place. A great start to our day.

The aroma of the bakeries are so strong and heavenly, you can find it just by the smell of it. They are known for their sourdough but I was told to try their brioche which was what I got. The bread was soft, pillowy, with a slight sweetness to it that's perfectly balanced with the natural flavors of wheat flour and milk. A small batch just came out when we arrived so it was warm as we devoured it. I was told there's usually a long line but maybe it was during the heat wave when we went so there were only a few people ahead of us. One interesting thing is there's a stone in front of the store which has 2 shapes of their signature breads. They actually use that to guarantee the size of the bread. Overall, although they only offer limited items, but they've perfected what they do offer. You can tell they use high quality ingredients. This is a must try when in the city.

This was the oldest bakery in Salzburg with references dating it operating back to the 12th…read morecentury. It was located below the street level, next to St. Peter and the funicular station up to the Hohensalzburg fortress. The wonderful smell of freshly baked bread was quite strong as we got closer and really caught our attention! Out in front was a fully functional waterwheel that was the main source of power for their milling machine. All the ovens were wood fired. It's as if nothing changed over the last 700 plus years. Upon entering we saw the prep and work areas but all was quiet like they just finished baking. Definitely small batches compared to more commercial bakeries. Since we visited in the morning, we ordered their super soft and sweet brioche rolls and the cinnamon raisin buns. Our server pulled them fresh off the racks instead so they were both warm and heavenly in smells. They were delicious. We so wanted to come back again after our first visit but we just ran out of time. Will definitely be our priority during a return visit to Salzburg.
