Located on the Azores island of Faiail, in the city of Horta, Cafe Sport is well known to sailors worldwide. Made famous as the place where sailors meet when crossing the Atlantic to trade stories and it used to be a post office where they'd send and receive mail. It now boasts a world famous gin and tonic. For only 2.90 euro, I loved its fruity taste. The inside is small and filled with flags and sailing memorabilia. Outdoor seating offers a beautiful view of a marina. Though it's named Peter, locals know it better as Cafe Sport as its never been owned by anyone with that name. Great stop in the beautiful Azores, they do serve food but finding indoor seating nearly impossible. Worth a visit! read more

Peters is a wonderful place to go to enjoy a nice meal and see all the memorabilia from the past. It is always crowded but, if you want to sit inside just hang around until a table clears. They also have a seating area across the street that has a very nice view of the harbor if you are not in a hurry. We heard about Peter's from friends and knew we wanted to see it when we visited Horta. The menu has a very good variety of meals at reasonable prices and their speciality drink, which is a Gin & Tonic. We enjoyed a nice lunch size meal of steak and sides. There are old sailing photos, flags and artifacts all over the walls and well worth the time to look around. They also have a Scrimshaw Museum that is amazing. So I saw this place and read about it in my travel preparation for the Azores. I heard really good things about it, and was excited to try and Passion Fruit Gin and Tonic. It was sold to me as a Gin and Tonic for non gin and tonic lovers. Needless to say, service was horrible. We also tried to get lunch and a few drinks as we waited to check into our hotel. The drinks were not that good, and the service was bad because we were told to sit down, but nobody came to take our orders, we tried ordering at the front, but they told us to sit down to order. It was just a mess that ultimately lead us to eat at the hotel instead. Drinks were also watered down and did not taste good at all. Especially since our party had someone who loved Gin and Tonic, he was not impressed. To be honest, this is definitely a tourist location. Don't come here for food, go straight to the front and order drinks only. The location is what gives it 2 vs 1 start because it is such a cool place where sailors would post notes to each other as they cross the Atlantic. It's worth stopping by for pictures and a drink, but to quickly depart after that period. read more

Since the Azores are known for dairy products from "contented" cows, you can't go wrong with local cheese. Very cool bar in Faial Island right across the marina. We came to Peters in the early afternoon and were able to find a table right away. We enjoyed their gin tonic and loved them...Peters gin is delicious. They serve food also but we didn't eat anything while we were there so can't provide info on food. The facility was very attractive, interesting, funky and interesting..However my wife and I both disliked what we ordered. Possibly we ordered the wrong things..Wife had vegetarian burger which she ate less than 5 c/0..I tasted it and understood why. My Pete's Tacos were lousy too..served on cabbage leaves, mediocre beef chile, avocado and sour cream.. service was fine..this place is good for everything but it's food. Kind of a tourist trap. I ordered a salad because I'm a vegetarian and it was one of the only options on the menu (even then I had to order it without tuna paste). I've had better salads at Wendy's (a few canned black olives, mealy tomato slices, and lettuce so wet it dripped water). My friend ordered his steak medium and it came out with a cold, red center. Awesome place for a quick beer, to sit and chat with friends, jump on wifi, or hang out on the outside deck. Live music a couple nights a week, great scene. Did not eat here but friends did and said food was great. The shish kabobs looked especially good. Great place during the day, evening, or late night. read more

Peter's Cafe Sport is a little of everything - museum, bar, restaurant and sailor hangout. We were there in the winter, so it was a little slow, but I hear this place picks up in the summer. Prices are very reasonable, food is good, and the sail decor is great. We loved this place and visited twice while we were in town. A must see in Horta. read more

The main "go to" place in Horta. Always open and inviting. Gin & tonic is mandatory, great "finas" (small draft beer) as well. Some of the best fish soup around, daily plates and great cod fish balls too. Main stopping spot for sailboats crossing the Atlantic, amazing tables overlooking the marina on sunny days. read more
