Pillars of Earth Construction - Small Rundle stone bubbler

    Pillars of Earth Construction

I hired Pillars of Earth to do snow removal at my new house before I moved in, three times over…read moreabout a month. (I didn't move in right away because I was having renovations done.) They promised to take photos of their work, so I wouldn't even have to travel to the house to make sure it was good. The first time, I had forgotten to leave outdoor lights on, so they were unable to clear the stairs down to the basement door in the dark, but they came back and did that the next day. The photos were a little delayed, but when they arrived, showed that Pillars of Earth had done a wonderful job clearing the snow in all the areas I asked (sidewalk, pathways up to the door, the garage, around the side of the house). There was a little bit of ice in a couple places but enough clear path to walk on. This was confirmed when I went to the house a little later on. The second time, they did a great job again, absolutely no complaints, and they sent photos again. The third time, I gave them very little warning, as I wanted the paths to be clear in time for moving day. I didn't hear back until after they had already done the work, the day after I requested it. They had taken photos as usual, and they didn't even charge me, as a housewarming gift! So in short: Pillars of Earth does a great job of removing snow, receives payment by etransfer, works on pretty short notice (generally a couple days), and is happy to do special things like taking photos of their work. The person I booked with, Tony, communicates by email and text (but not phone, due to lack of hearing, which is fine by me), and is very pleasant and nice! I definitely recommend Pillars of Earth for snow removal, and I'll be looking into their winter plan where they come whenever needed for a monthly fee.

It's all around been great with only one hiccup. We spend a fair amount of time out of town and have a large driveway so we expect it cleaned for while we are home and away. For safety, ease of access and to make sure it looks like someone is home. The work is top notch and only once have we had an issue. The morning cleaning of snow was scheduled to start no earlier than 7 am and one morning they were doing it at 6:30. We let them know not to and ever since things have been great. Will be using this year and winter.

Dutch Yardworks - Stair custom built to decrease the slope in any hazardous area beside your home

    Dutch Yardworks

    (1 review)

I was pretty surprised that Dutch Yardworks didn't have a review on Yelp yet. This business is…read moredefinitely as good as it gets, and I think serves as a great example of what people are looking for in landscape construction. The owner/proprietor, Colin Bergsma, can be counted on to deliver. Hardscaping is expensive -- we had our first round of it done in 2001 with installing the paving stones we had pulled and relaid by Dutch Yardworks this year -- and I have to confess I wasn't happy with that first round, so when it became obvious that a do-over was approaching, I wanted to be sure that this would be the last time! I more or less stalked the Facebook page Colin has up for his company for a year, watching to see what kind of work he does and what sorts of comments customers give. There was nothing there to set off any alarms, so we approached Colin about the most urgent part of our deteriorating paver situation. He came to do an estimate and pointed out a variety of things that could be improved with a full re-lay -- and I'm not talking simple aesthetics, I mean big risks that we had basically been ignoring, such as ponding on our covered patio when we were planning to install a hot tub, and a retaining wall around our fire pit that was sinking and giving way. He gave us estimates for both the quick fix and the full enchilada -- the difference between them was substantial, of course, but we decided that it was time to make the investment, before our luck runs out and we have a flood on our hands. The first sign that we had chosen well was the installation of a port-a-potty. For a job that will take multiple personnel and literally weeks in the middle of a pandemic, I was immediately reassured that Colin had our privacy and safety in mind. Next, our existing bricks were pulled and stacked while Colin shot seemingly hundreds of transit lines to design the re-installation. Remember the heat we had this year? I admired the tenacity of the team, who only took weekends and evenings off. The next phase involved excavation of the site. Colin has some truly amazing excavation equipment in that it is narrow enough to fit through a 40" gate with room to spare. The areas were graded, and sand was packed down using a combination of hard labour and construction equipment. This sounds like it could be noisy, but my neighbours actually commented that they were surprised at how unobtrusive the work was to them, even for the long period it took. Finally, the pavers were relaid (with impressive adherence to the previous design, though with a few improvements), leveled, and spaces filled with polymeric jointing sand, which hardens when water is applied. This alone was a HUGE improvement to the previous installation which used sand that inevitably filled with grass, moss, and weeds, despite a lot of work on my part to try and prevent it. Now all I'll need to do is keep the areas clear with a leaf blower -- minutes per job rather than hours. Colin also installed drains, weeping tile, and ducts leading to the end of our yard, ensuring we'll have no more ponding on the lawn, which had been a problem because our property sits lower than all the ones around it backing on to the stormwater drainage lake. Finally, Colin created a swooping landscaped area against the fence where water runs down from other properties to the lake -- an area that had been perpetually soggy. He covered it in cedar mulch, and we are planting shrubs there, but I'm also happy with the easy upkeep for the future. This part was his design entirely, and will ultimately add a great deal to our privacy. We use our back yard a lot, and honestly it is our favourite part of living here. Colin and his crew made it so much easier and safer for us to keep up, and did it all with apparent ease during a heat wave. We hardly saw or heard from the crew until the job was done. I waited to post this review until I saw how the grade of the pavers held up after all the snow we had, and then the melt. The deck drains water onto the patio from above where it joins to the house, and I was pleased to see that even so, the areas closest to the house are dry first, indicating a strong positive grade away from the foundation. I am happy with every penny spent, and will call Dutch Yardworks again for any hardscaping we need in the future.

Landscape Solutions - The photo the business owner texted me, claiming a fabricated "emergency" that prevented him from showing up to a pre-arranged appointment.

    Landscape Solutions

Sorry, I just can't support the high ratings others have given this business on other review sites,…read morebut this Yelp review won't be very favourable. Maybe the owner is burned-out and doesn't care about service anymore, or maybe he just thinks his customers are all stupid, but what my spouse and I experienced was a dishonest business-owner who outright lied to us and demonstrated deceptive business practices even before he finished quoting for the job! I have a policy not to deal with any business that shows such blatant disrespect and contempt for their customers so early on in the process -- it saves a lot of aggravation (and money) later on. My next-door neighbour and I decided to install an artificial lawn in one coordinated project for our front yards, so our front yards and flower beds would match. My niece used Landscape Solutions for her yard a couple of years ago, and recommended them for the project. I called Shiva by telephone, and we followed-up by text to confirm an appointment day and time for his inspection and quotation for the two properties involved in the project. Shiva promised to come to the home at noon yesterday (Friday, June 23, 2023), and my spouse and I duly waited for him. Only Shiva didn't show up. No phone call, no text message, no revised ETA or request to re-book. A little after 1 pm I sent Shiva a text message to remind him that we were still waiting to meet with him as arranged, and asked him if he was a no-show. A few minutes later, we got a text message back from Shiva saying "Hey, I'm so sorry", followed by an attached photo of a flat tire on some unidentified vehicle with a hammer laying on the pavement beside the tire, with another text message saying "This is what I've been dealing with". I texted back with the following polite message: "Okay, I understand, but it would have been helpful to know if you wanted to rebook when it was getting nearer to our appointment. I understand things happen, but I would've appreciated a heads up because I have been waiting for you. Would you like to rebook?" What followed was more bizarre ... a series of texts with a third party, mistakenly texted to me, that appeared to be finalising some social arrangements for meeting together with a friend (or friends) that afternoon at "Aaron's". Shiva expressed to his other texting partner that he was "excited to see", and that he was looking forward to meeting up. Suddenly, Shiva seemed to realise his mistake, and texted "sorry, wrong person" to me, and asked if he could re-book with me at 3:30 pm the following Monday. I could see what was happening. It was apparent to me that Shiva decided to abandon his pre-arranged business appointments for whatever other more exciting last-minute options now presented themselves to him. Even more unfortunate, he decided to concoct an elaborate story of an "emergency" flat tire to give credence to his decision to be a no-show. Now suspicious I was being conned, I looked up the file properties of the image of the flat tire he sent to me via text ... it wasn't a recent picture, it wasn't even taken on that same day! His excuse was nothing more than an elaborate lie and completely fabricated. However it strikes you, I believe treating one's customers as idiots and fools demonstrates a fundamental dishonesty and contempt for the people that pay your salary. Make whatever conclusions you want about how trustworthy this guy is, here was my answer to him via text when he asked to rebook on the following Monday: "Thanks Shiva, but don't worry about it, I'll make arrangements with a different company. To be honest, I don't really like the way you have shown how you do business. You seem to be dishonest and already treat your potential customers with disrespect and contempt. Your excuse today was a lie ... the photo you sent me was taken yesterday morning. If you don't want to be in business and provide a service for a fee, you probably shouldn't be in business. In any event, I think I would rather deal with someone else who I trust more."
