I am a scientist and sometimes, we scientists need some custom work done. So, I came to Peterson to get some custom polycarbonate work done for some scientific instruments. I sent plans and dimensions back and forth with Austin for a couple weeks. My needs were not huge, but not simple either. What I needed involved boxes and lids and hinges and gaskets. Suffice it to say that Peterson did everything I asked and more. They constructed my items quickly, and more accurately and beautifully than I could have expected. And cheaper too! Don't be weirded out that you need to get buzzed in, it's not some exclusive contractors-only zone. In fact, they have all sorts of interesting plastic stuff like clipboards and trophys (at pretty good prices) that it's worth a stop in just to see. Went here for a new window, of sorts. I have a few art-glass windows on my house. They are nice, but they are a little drafty. Some are arched or other wise non rectangular, so I can't just get storms for them. I cut a template out of cardboard for a window and brought it in. I got back a piece of acrylic that I can screw into the window frame to protect my windows and keep the weather out. Even got holes pre-drilled for the screws. Though, I picked a window a little too big for my car (atleast with the baby in the back) and with the hours it was tough to get it back to my place. Plus I screwed up the template so I needed a 1/4" off the bottom to make the rigid plastic fir where the cardboard flexed. But they got it done at a fair price and now it's up and looks great. I have a few more windows to do, so I'll return. read more

This company is great if you own an aquarium and need custom plastic fabrications. I requested two custom-sized acrylic clear panels (24" x 24" and "11 x 9-7/8"). I intended to use as covers on my open 60G saltwater tank and 12G sump underneath in the cabinet to reduce water evaporation. Jenny was fantastic at following up with quotes after I submitted my drawings with dimensions online at their website. She also recommended using polycarbonate instead of acrylic for better long-term durability. I'm very happy for taking her advice. The price was reasonable and they were able to accommodate my request for a hole to be cut out in each panel to fit around PVC drain/return pipes. The panels were ready for pickup at their dock within two business days later. Their walk-in showroom is currently closed due to COVID, but you can easily contact them via phone or website. The majority of their work is for contractors, businesses and industrial companies, but they were super nice in accommodating my small order. They also provide laser cutting, engraving, signage, silk screening, do-it-yourself accessories, etc. read more

I had a small piece of acrylic fabricated for my aquarium - $15 was pricey but I'm pretty sure that was the minimum order price. The piece of course was perfect and matched my requirements precisely. For the do-it-your-selfer, they have a lot of acrylic scraps of all sizes and thickness for very low prices. read more

Owner refused to get out of chair and cut a sheet when asked by employee to help. Sat in his chair not 10 feet away screwing around on his phone, while we both waited. Maybe it was because both the employee and me are women. Maybe didn't realize that the few pieces I bought today were in addition to a several hundred dollar order I got last week. I really don't know. But as an artist and fabricator who is used to obnoxious men at stores like this, I would have to say this was probably the shittiest I've been treated face-to-face. This place is great! I've been here a few times now and look forward to continue using them in the future. The showroom people are very attentive to the project you are trying to work on and have great skills to go above and beyond in figuring out what you need. I am a bit of a perfectionist and have even had plastics cut down that afterwards I wasn't pleased with colors and they had redone it no problem and really did not even fret about it. If you're a student they are able to work with your budget and still have you walking out the door with exactly what you need. For smaller orders sometimes the wait time is next to nothing which is amazing during final projects time! read more

I ordered a neon sheet of plexiglass for a door that I turned into a table. Over the phone the guy Eric explained all the options and price points. I received a good price for a 6ft x 2ft 1/2 1/8 inch sheet, at $130 (without tax) especially because I had been shopping around and everything else was more expensive. The sheet was ready really fast too. I love that Petersen Brothers is local and in a totally Chicago old school building on Pulaski. The inside for pick up had all sorts of odd plexiglass pieces that would be cool for small projects. I'm not a home owner doing large windows or things, but I really loved them for this table project and want to do more small plastics projects. The neon is super cool looking with a glow around. I would think that people looking for something affordable and different in their decor might want to check this place out. read more

If you could have seen the look of awe on our faces when we stepped inside... THIS is the place to be! No wonder our prof said, "You're going to Petersen Bros? I LOVE that place!" What's not to love? They sell left over acrylic for outrageously low prices (I'm sorry, what was that? twenty-five cents? For that one right there? You mean the one they would be selling for ten bucks at pearl?). We scrounged around that place, grabbing anything and everything and left armed with enough acrylic to last past midterms and possibly even to finals... while only being $17.88 poorer. Oh yes, $17.88. The most expensive item we had BY FAR was $3. Our next highest price was $1. So, if you're an architectural student/drone or if you just like playing with acrylic for some odd reason (I know you're out there!), this is the place to go. Don't bother anywhere else. I had the pleasant experience of buying at Petersen Plastics. They're not just selling what the customer call for, they inquired about my application which confirmed the right 'plastic' was being used for my application as I came to learn there's quite a variety of 'plastics' that work better in some applications than others. Not only that, but they matched a (slightly) better price from their competitor - not by going through a ladder of approvals, rather called the owner over for approval. One of the nicest, unassuming people I've met in the supply or fabrication business. Speaking of fabrication - I had the fortune of walking through the warehouse - it's easy to see this is a company with long term employees who aren't just tradesmen, but true craftsmen who have long term experience with every aspect of plastic and the nuances required to make a project or application perfect. I bought a Nambe stainless steel baby rattle for my grand-daughter's baptism gift. Now I needed to get it engraved. Turns out stainless steel needs a special kind of engraving "bit" and most jewelers use diamonds that are not hard enough. In a effort to find an engraver, I called jewelers and trophy engravers all over Chicago. After calling about 15 stores, I found a jeweler who recommended George at Petersen's. He said George was the only engraver he knew in all of Chicagoland who had the training and equipment to engrave my steel and curved rattle. I also was up against a deadline. It was Tuesday and I needed it Saturday. I reached George and he wasn't sure he could do it because he was leaving the next day for a week vacation. I drove over there. He looked at it and was so kind. He said he would do his best to get to it that night, though he was already backed up and it was an arduous, time-consuming process to set up the equipment. The next day I got a call from Petersen's and they told me the good news. George had finished the engraving for me. He did a beautiful job. I had a gut feeling that he would do the engraving because he was going to visit his grand-kids. The staff is warm and friendly, the prices very reasonable and they will obviously go the extra mile for a customer. So, now you know who one of the best engravers in the city is. read more

I communicated online with Austin, placed a quote request, then an order, and they cut the piece and delivered via UPS all in a couple of days. It is perfect! Not that I work with plexi/lucite all that often but I have no need to go anywhere else. Awful, Awful, Awful!!! I ordered a $216.00, 6' by 3 ' mylar mirror and paid $75 for delivery. I watched as the delivery man dragged the unwrapped mirror 20 feet on the pavement towards our receiving door. The mirror arrived scratched with the added bonus of all my credit card information boldly attached to the front of the mirror. I refused delivery. I was told that the mirror should have been wrapped and --so sorry for the credit card debacle. I reordered and hired a delivery service...we found the mirror unwrapped and leaning against a wall. The mirror was filthy and the plastic film covering ripped. I was told it was my fault because I waited 2 weeks to retrieve the mirror after ordering!? I was also reassured that the mirror was perfect under the plastic film. I foolishly took the mirror and when the plastic film was removed a large scratch was obvious where the plastic film was ripped AND there are many areas where the mirror is gouged on the back. I called to speak with Ken Petersen, but never received a call back. Awful company!!! read more
