We eventually decided on 2 sausage rolls and one apple fritter to share. The sausage rolls were good, but the piece de resistance was that apple fritter. It. Was. Huge. And delicious! If we ever pass through Vulcan again, this bakery will definitely be a stop we add to our list.

So several years later, here I am. The ambiance is typical for a bakery run by a 70 year old man. There are old signs like "espresso yourself" up on the walls. One immediate problem stood out to me: there's no air conditioning, and it was hot in there. I got a blueberry pastry and a coffee. Although the coffee was just in a pre-made cannister, it was quite good and refillable. The pastry was very good and had a ton of fruit filling. There is plenty of seating, although I can imagine it gets quite busy at 5 in the morning when all the old people from Strathmore come in for lunch. It said on the window that it was a bakery and a cafe, but I failed to see any espresso machine and didn't ask. Strathmore needs a good cafe with great espresso and a friendly atmosphere--like Analog or Phil & Sebastian's in Calgary. This certainly isn't it, unfortunately. With that said, I'll probably come back again when I'm in the mood for a fresh pastry.

Lovely little bakery with plenty of charm and great eats. The one thing I would say stood out enough to detract from a 5-star experience was an overall lack of service. You order inside and they bring your food to you, but service is slow, and both days we noticed that the staff don't really engage patrons unless spoken to first. This can make it very hard to figure out exactly how to order, if seating is self-service (it is), etc. it was insanely hot when we visited, for example, and while one day we were able to get larger glasses for water, the next they refused to give anything larger than a glorified shot glass...despite serving our mimosas in the same larger glasses. Overall it just read of a young team that was slightly disconnected and not overly concerned with customer experience, and that's something that made things take longer than necessary and put a slight damper on an overall wonderful experience.

Dylan was one of the workers taking care of the station, and he is very friendly and the one who offered me the vegetable scone. I'm sad that I live all the way in California because I would totally buy from this bakery all the time if I could :) The baked goods are made with sourdough starter too, which definitely makes them a healthy choice!
