They've really made the place into a nice looking shop, which could almost double as the interior of someone's house, just someone who has way too much money, and so buys different models of the same thing. There's cool bread bins (see pic) which looked like kitsch 50s Alien pods, and Union Jack biscuit tins, which somehow just look stylish and not weirdly nationalist, and I also spotted a really fancy little, retro, cream coloured, Ice cream maker. And what made all of these products even better, was the fact that they were nicely laid out, and backgrounded by some chilled out jazz music.Nice.

I expected it to be small, but actually it expands down the length of the north wing of Southover Grange House. It is a shop/gallery which sells the work of the Sussex guild, a group of designers artists and craftspeople, whose members live and work in Sussex and the surrounding area. The various artists' and designers' work for sale includes pottery, jewellery, furniture and art. It ranges in price and style, from homey crockery painted with cartoon-y chickens, to elegantly painted silk clothing, to wooden furniture for upwards of two grand a piece. The guild also runs classes, such as how to make fused glass jewellery, or turn wooden bowls, or do quilting. To inquire about courses you can telephone or visit the shop.

There was a copy of 'The Chap' magazine (produced in Lewes) on display in the menswear section, which set the tone for the rest of the shop. Alas that became a victim of the redevelopment of that part of Brighton so if you're looking for a department store in Sussex then you can't do much better than head to Tunbridge Wells and visit Hoopers. It has everything you would expect in a department store including a well stocked Kitchen and glass department and a fine soft-furnishings department. The hooper's cafe is a good place to go for tea, coffee and a range of cakes or for lunch with sandwiches, jacket potatoes as well as a range of hot meals, all at reasonable prices. It is also fully licensed. It also has a great men's department, although this is outside the main building to the left in a little arcade, and the prices there seem a little higher than in the main store.
