Their new location is further away but still worth the trip in my opinion. The staff here are friendly and knowledgeable. I came in not too long ago for a feeder mouse and was telling the woman at the register how I had just bought a new heat lamp from Petco and had to unplug it because it smelled like it was going to start an electrical fire and how disappointed I was. She recommended I try out a Fluker's brand heat lamp and showed me what they had in stock. I'm glad she did, I love it! Another time I had driven to the old location out of habit before realizing my error and turning around. I had gotten to the new location just as they were closing up shop for the night. The man in the process of locking the door saw me, waved, and asked if I needed something. I said I was only there for a feeder mouse and he said no problem! He took the time out of his day to help me out even when he didn't have to and I really appreciated that. The tanks all seemed dirty and prices for cat and dog items seemed over priced. I wouldn't buy a fish here considering I saw multiple dead fish floating in a tank. One looked as if it had been there for days. The smell of the store is awful as well. read more

I just moved to the area and was planning on setting up my new tank of guppies and cherry shrimp, and wanted to stop in and see what they had and I was surprised. not only do they have staff that actually knows what they are talking about, they are kind and fast, and have basically any kind of fish from guppies, koi, salt water, and way more! (They also has healthy hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, ferrets, birds and more.) I'll definitely be going back! I can't be happier with my Dog that I bought from this place, the workers seems to care that the dog was going to a good home. My puppy looked like he had been over feed and didn't get any exersize and the prices for everything we got for my puppy seemed a little high. They get 5 stars because I love my dog so much. but they lose some stars for prices and cleanleness. They do have a selection of mainly fish and some other pets. read more

The staff are rude I asked for some help getting a fish and the lady rolled her eyes at me and said "can't you see I'm busy" but she was just walking around asking everyone else if they found everything. Not only that half the fish didn't have a price so the fish I wanted I couldn't get because nobody knew the price. They should really update their website with pictures and price's of fish or at least keep track. I will never go back there. read more

Will be reporting to authorities. 1) Puppies are from puppy mills 2) All salt water tanks were not cared for and had Aptasia. A tang was rotting in one of the tanks and it was still alive stuck in a corner. 3) The birds were poorly cared for, an employee opening admitted that they have given it cigarettes on occasion. 4) Prices were WAY higher then the standard for such poor quality care and heritage of the animals. 5) Ferrets were being kept in too small of a cage and being kept on corn cob bedding as well all other small animals and corn cob bedding can cause digestive irritation. 6) All hamsters were put in multitudes which not only stresses them out but also promotes inbreeding and fighting. Many hamsters were pregnant and had wet tail. 7) The rats and mice were being poorly taken care of, the tank not only did not have a ventilation system (which allows clean air flow to prevent respiratory issues ) but it also had mixed genders in all sizes of rats which leads to inbreeding and mutations. 8) The rabbits and ginuea pigs were not being cared for properly because they were on the wrong bedding and being kept in huge quantities which again, promotes fighting. 9) The hedgehogs were not being kept in an appropriate cage at all, they need a constant heat source and cannot be on grid wheels because their feet are fragile and can break very easily as well as getting bumble foot. My final say on this store is that it is a prime example of why pet stores like these are out of business or have been abolished, no animal should be ripped from the wild and shoved into a dirty smelly old building with a poorly painted sign on it. I honestly wish this pet store would be shut down, the employees even tried reasoning with the poor care by saying "most of them die before being bought anyways or we sell them as feeders so we don't really care". I hope they're shut down ASAP. read more

Buyer Beware: Puppy mill! We have a certain interest in a particular breed of dog. When my daughter told me this breed was at this pet store, I immediately went to visit. This was the ugliest dog of this breed I had ever seen. She and her brother were just plain ugly. They were advertised as "toy" but they were actually "mini" which means they will get a lot bigger than advertised. We waited and waited. After 6 months, the female puppy had not been sold. I was fretting about her possibly going back to the puppy mill breeder to be bred because she was close to getting her menstrual cycle at this age. She had been at this pet store for almost 5 months! We "rescued" her and immediately took her to Iowa Alliance to get spayed. We have had several dogs of this particular breed, I can tell you because she was in a cage for 5 months, she had no manners in dog socialization: she would go into our other dog's food bowl, crawl over his head (dominating gesture and he snapped at her, she didn't seem to realize this was what she was doing), very nervous, every time we raised our hand to pet her/she would shy away as if she had been hit, difficulty in potty training, leash training, and sit/down/stay puppy training, not trusting of humans. While she was at the pet store for 5 months, the staff did not even bother to teach her basic skills such as leash training, sit/stay/come, and people socialization. Also, this dog's tail had been cut too short according to our groomer. Her nails were too long and her ears were full of hair. Please do not give this store any of your hard earned monies by supporting the puppy mills. I looked up the breeder of this dog and he is a known puppy mill breeder. I feel bad for the puppy's parents, probably somewhere in a dark garage in cages with no human interaction but being used as puppy machines. read more

I love the fish selection, and they have nice corals and live rocks that the national chains don't usually carry. They also have sizes of fishtanks that the national stores don't have. The man who helped me looked a little rough around the edges but was ultimately very nice and knowledgeable. Had a very good experience despite the very loud, screaming bird. read more

Hello :) I bought my dog at Pet's Playhouse in December. I love my dog very much but, when I first asked to hold her the worker brought her out and she was shaking like crazy. I felt really bad for her, but I don't know if she was shaking because she was a puppy or what. Although after being at my house for a week or so she quit shaking. Recently I took her back to get her hair cut. Which let me add, this was not her first hair cut, but it was in fact the first time at this place getting it done. When we stepped inside the door she started shaking, and I had to pick her up. As far as the hair cutting went, well it was terrible. I guess you could say I was a bit picky, but hey I want my dog to look good right? First of all, let me just say that the girl that cut my dogs hair actually cut her. She cut her 3 times under her chin. If I wasn't already pissed off enough, she wasn't cut at all how I had asked. I specifically asked for her overall body to be an inch long. But I also asked if she would leave her head and face long. I have to add that the lady was paying more attention to cuddling my dog than she was to what i was telling her, which was far more important. When I picked her up, she looked like a completely different dog. Her body was basically shaved and the top of her head was long while her face was short. She looks as though she has an afro, which I didn't remember asking for. Honestly, i'm never taking my dog here again. On the car ride home she seemed really sad and timid which did in fact carry on a few days, and I suspected it was from the cuts under her chin but of course I don't know for sure. And as for the actually store, it doesn't look like it's well kept at all. It isn't clean in there. But maybe i'm just spoiled from going in to Pet Smart and Pet co.? Whatever the reason, it still doesn't change the fact that it looks like they don't clean. I'm not normally one to complain, but when it comes to my little four legged friend, I will. Interested in a puppy and was told if I wanted to see one they would bring it out of the closed in room....I then expressed interest in a dog the lady working in the puppy area stated we are not going to run the puppies in and out of the room I will bring it up to the window.....why would anyone buy a puppy without being able to hold it first! I had gotten a little black kitten from there about 16 to 18,yes ago she has been past for 5yrs now and she lived for 13 to 14 yes. The bes kitty I ever had. She was soo tiny she fit in the palm of my had, and had blue eyes which I knew she had been pulled.from mom too early as she also would suckle on the end of her tail when I cuddled her and her tail was up to her face. She had drainage from both eyes and I had asked about it the store lady said that they were just scratches from her playing with her litter mates, which I really didn't believe that but me and mom bought her, we took her to the vet and she had an internal infection obviously she had no prior vetting be for us which is I believe required by pet shops. She was a.$50 kitten. Should have went back to store to prove lady wrong and make them reimburse us for their mess up and pay the vet bill. What a careless place this place is plus extremely over priced its outrageous. I can't believe this place is still up and running especially have puppy mill dogs being sold here weather they admit to it or not they are, and that would explain y the dogs are kept in a room and people can't spend time with them or play with them because u have to actually buy one to get into the room and see them. That's y they are not socialable and have no manners, lack of any human contact. I will never go to this place unless its the only place I can get a product. This place is a joke!!! read more

Have been going to this place for years by default as it has the largest selection of tropical fish in Iowa. But, they are not the healthiest. Far too many of the tanks are quarantined. Others that are not, contain sick fish, so beware and careful. Some tanks are contaminated with nasty types of algae. The selection of fish is not as great as it once was and the prices are too high for most. They don't seem to want to order any special requested fish, often giving the excuse that they are not available from their supplier or at that time of the year. I know better because shops that use the same supplier have no trouble getting the same requested fish. They will not deal in quantity discounts, either. I asked for a discount on a 100 neons and got a denial. I received a great discount at another shop down the road. Pet's Playhouse aims low and hits their mark. The "family" help is rather surly and not helpful or very knowledgeable. There is one young kid (Spencer) that is very good and knows his stuff. If you want live plants, go somewhere else. They know nothing about the care and feeding of live plants and their plant tanks are clear evidence of that statement. I go here about once a year to see if anything has improved... it hasn't and it gets worse. I would advise making a day trip to Tame Waters, Quality Aquatics, World of Fish and Sea Level in the Minn/St. Paul area to see how it should be done. Well worth the trip! read more
