I attended a webinar that said I could achieve Trader Tax Status by opening an LLC and moving my…read moretrading account(s) to it. This was supposed to allow me to deduct the investment services I've paid for and other expenses from my investment earnings and reduce my tax liability. They created the LLC promptly, but before I transferred my accounts to it I read "Green's 2026 Trader Tax Guide" by Robert A Green CPA. In it I learned that having the transactions go through a single member LLC does not get around the requirements of achieving Trader Tax Status. I now believe this would be a questionable practice that would potentially result in back taxes and penalties if challenged by the IRS. I just sent a certificate of cancellation to the state for the LLC (cost $220) to avoid having to pay ongoing annual franchise taxes of $300.
