Don't be deceived by the sign on the building ("Hirsch Weinstube") and no sign with the restaurant 's name, you are in the right place (as the menu by the door will attest). There are several different rooms within, so while it is much bigger than I had expected, it didn't feel too large once you are seated. Service was typical, but with the nice touch of rather than asking loudly whether I wanted an English menu, they quietly just gave me one (I clearly can't pass for German yet). My lamb shank in tomato sauce with pearl onions and roasted potato slices was fantastic. The lamb was perfectly cooked so that it was fork tender but not mushy, and the pearl onions and tomato sauce with it were delicious. The roasted potato slices were also nice done, if somewhat plain with just some salt and pepper for seasoning. With the pearl onions or lamb though, they gave a nice little crunch. While the prices were perfectly reasonable (€20 for an entree and beverage), the atmosphere is a little more upscale (plenty of jeans, but all with button down shirts or sweaters). Overall a great combination of reasonable prices, good food, and a slightly nicer atmosphere makes this a great choice for a date night, treating guests, or just grabbing a nice meal when you don't feel like cooking.

It's probably more expensive than most of the bars in the area, but I've been here a number of times and enjoyed the fact that if feels like a pub. Since I went here a number of times, I've ordered a number of their dishes. Really enjoyed their wings, fish and chips and chili. Their bangers and mash, irish stew and ribs weren't that great. Liked the staff here and this place also takes credit cards, which I thought was really convenient.

Pros: * it's an Irish pub and it looks like an Irish pub. Not that I've been to Ireland but I have been to a pub owned by an Irishman (close enough, maybe??) * the menu sticks to the theme. They didn't throw in chicken nuggets like some other ethnic places do * large outdoor patio with no street noise * live music Cons: * flavor was lacking. I had fish and chips. Tasted like the Gordon's Fisherman was working in the back. Don't get me wrong, the guy makes good filets but I expect more from a restaurant than a box. * surprisingly decent pricing from a hotel restaurant. Pitchers of beer were 13.90€ and my plate was 8.50€. * no kids menu...pro for us that night but a lot of families stay at this hotel and no accommodations for the wee ones at this eatery. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back but if I were across the street seeing Momma Mia! or Tarzan, I would definitely try it out again.

One thing I like about Schocken is the music. Stuttgart is known for its hip hop, but for a bar/…read moreclub, it can get a bit hard to dance to. The music ranges from 80s, 90s pop to house, simple, yet easy to dance to and not so loud that it's hard to talk to your friends. The drinks are a bit of a hit/miss, especially the cocktails but I find this quite natural for a bar/club here in Stuttgart. Since it's right next to a club, it can get pretty crowded, but not too much that it gets annoying. If you come during the weekdays, maybe a little early, the place is quite empty, which can be a good second stage for a light drink with some light music. The seating arrangements can be comfortable, as long as it doesn't get TOO crowded, which in that case, it's better to just stand up or dance. Very casual, comfortable, maybe a bit hipster even. Not too young, but not so old you feel like you are falling asleep. The bar also hosts mini concerts by bands from different cities and countries, which makes it fun to enjoy with a nice drink. Overall, I like Schocken and can't point my finger to anything extremely terrible. The hit/miss cocktails were the reason for the four stars.

The staff is very picky about who gets to go in. The second time, some of my friends got there first and were unable to get inside. I believe there were 3 guys and 4 girls. The staff said that they were having a private event. My 2 girl friends and I tried entering later that night and we were able to get in, so that means they were just lying about having a private event. The music wasn't even good. We left and went to HI Life and had a better night there. Even if you split into smaller groups, you would still have a hard time getting in especially if you are male.
