My 13 year old son asked him to clean up the sides and Phill gave him a buzz cut. He even said he didn't want it that short when he saw the clippers come for the top and Phill did it anyways! I love Phil's Barber Shop. The shop itself is really nice and awesome. They have a lot of cool barber type artifacts in there. The gentleman in there do an exceptional job at cutting hair. When I go in I like to get my cut from Phil. I'm not really a picky guy when it comes to a hairstyle, so when I go in I just say "Phil, make me look fresh" and within 10-15 minutes I cut a perfect cut that I get compliments on for weeks. They carry such great conversations in there it's almost like I want my hair to grow out quick just so I can go back and hang out with cool people and have awesome conversations. The topping on the cake is that they give you a little shoulder/neck massage with an old school vibrating device that totally relaxes you. It's also SUPER rad that they have a band show there once a month and it's totally worth going. Definitely a place that I want to give continued business and I hope you decide to go check it out! So we were in Monterey, CA to visit our daughter. We headed into Pacific Gove, CA for brunch at the Red House, which was great. Afterwards, we decided to walk around. I saw this old school barbershop and told wifey "hey I need a haircut really bad. Gonna stop in here." I sat down and Phill told me to sign in. I did. There were two barbers, both cutting hair. I was the only person waiting. Now you have to feel the scene of this place. 1950's style furniture and displays. Everything old school to include the products displayed to the barber coats worn by the barbers. This in itself was really cool. Now, while waiting, the barbers begin speaking about world events...questioning what the fuck is going on like normal people, not like brainwashed political hacks. The back and forth is hilarious. One cannot help but feel they've stepped foot back in time when dudes just spoke their minds in a barber shop. Phill keeps dropping bombs and questioning the going's on in the world. He offers a customer some crazy unique stickers. Finishes up with dude. Calls me to his chair. I sit down and he asks "what are we doing?" Before I can answer he tells me what he's going to do with my haircut. WTF? Ok whatever. I go with it. While he's cutting my hair some old fat dude leans over the half door from outside and says "Can I get a haircut?" Phill responds, "Not fuckin' standin' out there you can't." I bite my tongue as this dude continues to drop hilarious lines. My wife and mom are outside on the bench laughing while they listen to this dude cutting my hair. The end of the story...this goon gave me a badass haircut and had me laughing the entire time. THIS is how a barber shop should be. I'd see this dude weekly but live across the country. Raucous little barber shop on Lighthouse. Small spot with only 3 or 4 chairs. Phil seems to know everyone in town and stops to shoot the breeze with passersby frequently. Not necessarily a G-rated location, so do with that what you will. Oddly enough, I swung in her for the first time to get a haircut on the day of my wedding (what could go wrong?). I only waited for about 10 minutes. The barber I got was friendly, clearly knew what he was doing. My biggest pet peeve when getting a haircut is having to tell the person cutting my hair what guards to use and how many finger-lengths to keep on top.
