My brother picked up the meal and did not notice they'd neglected to include the pie! Tried calling and emailing to no avail. Very disappointing to say the least but the meal itself was excellent, well packaged , easy to reheat and delicious. I especially loved the fresh green bean casserole. They were quick to respond to our inquiry at first then communication started getting spotty the months leading up to our wedding regarding menu changes; I think staffing shortages have been a challenge for many industries. However, they were able to accommodate our requests and executed the dinner buffet service for our wedding well. They had many delicious options available to accommodate our guests' numerous dietary restrictions. We felt at peace the weeks leading up to the wedding. The passed appetizers were delicious! We had 120 guests and sadly the resounding feedback we got about our buffet was that there was not enough food. Still, the staff was very professional and cheerful throughout our event and it felt well worth the price point. We hired Phil's Catering for our wedding August7, 2021. It was a bit stressful because our contact for the event asked a lot of questions that were covered in the contract. This made me worry she didn't know what our requests were or what had been previously discussed with the owner Gary. The day of the event went smooth, mostly. BBQ'd on site, appetizers and non-alcoholic section (water tea lemonade and coffee). Dinner was served on time, tri-tip and chicken cooked to perfection. The desserts were to be put out at a later time, however they were put out with the appetizers. Our guests got confused and ate the dessert before dinner was served. It was reported to me that the appetizer plates went empty and the staff had to be prompted to refill. They did swiftly. Despite the small hiccups in the service, I would hire them again. read more

This is my only vendor for my June 2021 wedding who refuses to move my deposit to our new date, which we have to move because of COVID. We are trying to reschedule our wedding for April 2022 to be hopefully in the clear of COVID and Gary refuses to work with us. When I asked why he wasn't being flexible, he made me feel like the pandemic is something I can control and should have known about. We were holding onto hope that June 2021 would be fine in California with the mass vaccine distribution, but I found out 2 months before that my venue doesn't think we can have the amount of people we were hoping for. Even though it's still up in the air, we made the painstaking decision to move it to next year and not risk it. I immediately contacted Gary, and all of my other vendors, to let them know and try to find a new date that would line up with everyone. Every single one of my other vendors showed empathy and compassion and moved our contract and corresponding deposits to our new date without question. Gary said I should have told him sooner as other brides with later dates already had moved theirs. I attended the Nagelmann wedding this past weekend in Pismo Beach, which was delightful. The food, bartending and staff was all done through Phil's Catering. I found the staff to be professional and the food was on-point. The food was served buffet style, I enjoyed the fresh vegetables, the delicious whipped and infused butter, and the chicken, which was seasoned perfectly and really moist. For me, the key to good catering tends to be the attention given to the food line, which was kept clean and the appropriate side dishes were replaced when they got empty. I was also impressed with the attention given to the individual tables, filled water, removal of plates, etc. Not sure what this says about me, but I befriended the bartender Shawn (female) who did a great job at addressing the liquid needs of everyone. We had a great experience with Phil's Catering as our wedding reception caterer. They were professional, organized, and fun to work with. The staff was courteous and enjoyable. The caterer will play a big role in the experience of your guests and the overall success of your wedding "event", and you definitely want things to go smoothly. Patty (the manager from Phil's) was amazing. She had a good relationship with our wedding coordinator. She did a site visit the day before and answered all of our questions and completely put us at ease. The food was better than expected and we received numerous complements from guests. We did a family style dinner. We had poached salmon with dill sauce, vegetables with a bechamel sauce, polenta, and salad. It really was amazing. We went a bit heavy on the comfort (two creamy sauces!) but they were not overwhelming and the salmon was perfect. I picked Phil's Catering for the catering at my Paso Robles wedding, and they really did a fabulous job! Gary worked with me during the whole planning process, helping me refine my menu, and figure out the best way to stay under budget (that's right--he actually recommended ways the best ways to keep the bill low!!) The week of the wedding, he passed the baton to Cathy, the banquet manager, and she knew exactly what to do. The whole process was flawless. Now onto the most important thing--the food was delicious!!! My husband's one wedding request was tri-tip, which they BBQed on site. This company catered my nieces wedding about three months ago. It was a buffet but for some reason my table and the table next to us didn't receive chicken or steak because they had run out. HOW DO YOU RUN OUT OF MEAT IN A BUFFET WHEN PEOPLE ARE STILL GETTING THEIR FIRST SERVING? When I was standing in the buffet line I over heard the Bride asking the manager if there was more meat he could put out, and he told her they ran out, and then accused her of have more guests that she gave a head count for. I had also over heard her being told that everyone had taken more meat than necessary and that was why they had run out. Seeing my niece, the Bride, cry on her big day because someone is accusing her of having too many guests was horrible (the wedding coordinator went around and did a count, and there were 10 people less than the final count given, there were only 143 guests there, it's not like this was a 300+ wedding). First of all, it is a buffet, people should be able to come back for seconds or even thirds if necessary, there is no reason to run out of food while people are still being served their first serving. I am giving this caterer 1 star because there is NO excuse to run out of meat for an event that was planned over a year in advance. Although the couple was refunded the costs of the food (1/3 of the total cost), It doesn't replace the awful memory branded on what what supposed to be the happiest day of their lives (and how starving I was). Our family has gotten together a couple times since, and the Bride just doesn't even want to talk about the wedding because of how embarrassed she is with this whole situation. If you hire this company to cater your wedding, think twice. The bride told us the wedding coordinators from "Kramer Events" told her that they would never recommend this company ever again to any of their clients. read more

We attended a wedding this weekend catered by Phil's Catering. The food was served buffet style and consisted of a spinach salad with strawberries, walnuts, and cheese, bread with garlic butter (the best tasting part of the meal), soggy zucchini slices in some sort of sauce, chicken breast, and tri-tip with a sweet sauce with mushrooms. This caterer deserves a one star rating for two reasons. First of all, the food tasted terrible. We were the last table to serve ourselves and there was barely any soggy zucchini left and sauce for the tri-tip. All of the food was extremely bland and needed salt, except for the garlic butter. The tri-tip was undercooked, underseasoned, and extremely chewy as well. Second of all, the the serving staff was extremely rude. Specifically, the man with a mustache who was cutting and serving the tri-tip made a rude remark about one of the wedding guests. The guest asked where the silverware was and the server told him it was on the table; and as the guest walked away, the server remarked that "that guy has done a little too many things [drugs] back in high school. It's ok man we all did that." That was completely uncalled for. Servers should be trained to keep those comments to themselves. read more

I would highly recommend hiring Phil's Catering! Right from the beginning they were a pleasure to work with. Gary was wonderful during our tasting and answered all our questions (believe me, I had a lot!) . We planned our wedding from Orange County and Gary made it so easy on us! The banquet staff was very professional, took such great care of us and really gave us a personal experience. Our banquet manager, Chris, gave us VIP service and even brought us some appetizers during our photos! We were starving and so thankful for her thoughtfulness! I heard many compliments about how friendly the bartender was and my sister was very impressed that one of the servers sliced my little nephew's tri tip for him without hesitation! I am so happy we chose phils catering for our son and daughter in laws wedding at spreafico ranch nov 7, 2015. From the start with the yummy tasting at his place in Atascadero to the responsive communication while preparing for the wedding. The food was fantastic and we chose buffet style which worked out fantastic for our guests we had approx 160 people and still had leftovers to take home. While after wedding photos were taken our guests enjoyed appetizers that were served by staff as everyone mingled. The HUGE plus to this was immediately after the wedding appetizers and champagne were served to the bridal party who were starving and in need of refreshments before the formal photos. Phils staff was right there serving the refreshments not only to our guests but to the bridal party who were located at separate areas of the reception and wedding venue. Also it was wonderful that phils staff made sure the bride n broom got to stay seated and were served their meals instead of braving a buffet line. The champagne was served by phils staff and even though we had purchased our own plates , glasses and silverware they cleaned all the tables after the food service and stacked everything for easy transportation by us. We chose Phil's catering at kind of the last minute for our wedding. It was a small wedding of only 30 people, but we were treated as well as I would have expected for a large event of 300 or more. Gary was easy to get hold of, great to talk to, and made excellent suggestions (even at the last minute) to make our event terrific. He even coordinated all of the rentals that we needed from Taylor Rents in San Luis (with a discount too). We had a BBQ brought out to our home for the wedding (also a rental from Phil's) and the food was cooked right there. All of the guests raved about the food. I gave only a score of 4 for professionalism for two reasons - first, the chef/cook remained dressed in a white t-shirt with an apron on for the entire service - even after the cooking was done at the BBQ. We greatly appreciated him helping out Connie with the service, but it would have been nice if he had put a nicer shirt on when he did so. The second reason was when one of our guests spilled some champagne, I went to him looking for a towel and he gave me one. As the groom, I expected that he might actually come over and clean the spill himself. Overall, the food was excellent and our server, Connie, was wonderful. Phil's catered our wedding last August, and they did such a wonderful job. Our family and friends loved the food, and their staff was incredible. From the initial tasting to the day of the ceremony their staff was incredibly accommodating. Phil's not only catered wonderful tri tip and chicken, they handled our linen rentals, our dance floor rental, helped us rent heaters last minute, and handled the majority of the clean up! Great Things About Phil's Catering: * The price was best we found in the county * Communication via email ahead of time was easy * Food was amazing. Some people said it was the best tri tip they have ever had. * Staff were flexible as we had to make major accomodations for the rain * Buffet line looked beautiful * Staff were helpful Concerns About Phil's Catering: * Ran out of plates (partially our fault for putting plates on the tables. But even still, I would imagine it's possible for plates to blow away, being dropped, etc. Maybe an extra pack just in case would have been helpful) * We not only ran out of chicken, but ran very low or even out of beans, salad, bread and veggies. My friends who were served at the second to last table said they only took a tiny bit of food because that was the last tray and they were afraid there wouldn't be enough for the final table * Phil's Catering staff told our guests that we had more people arrive than RSVPd when they asked if they were bringing more food to fill the empty trays (which we actually had 4 less people come) * Announced over the speaker system that we had more guests than expected and to take only one serving of food. I think it made the people who already ate feel guilty for getting too much food and the people who hadn't eaten yet feel nervous that they wouldn't get any food * They later reported we had extra tri tip. I didn't know we had extra tri tip. I don't think our guests knew that either. Since they announced over the loudspeaker that we were low on food, they might have well announced that we had extra tri tip so those guests who took less food than they wanted to ensure others ate, could have gotten more meat. And I wouldn't have minded getting the leftovers! I made recommendations to Phil's Catering about my concerns and they politely responded to some of them and said they will make changes to avoid this situation in the future. I will start by saying I am a VERY easy going person and have NEVER left a bad review. This is actually my first review (good or bad) ever. Things were THAT bad! Brides beware! This guy, Gary is NOT nice or easy to deal with. If you want a stress free wedding planning experience/day of, stay away!! I just had Gary and his staff cater my wedding this last weekend. The inital communication started out ok...quick on email but very short and cold. Not everyone is super friendly soI let it pass. As the wedding approached and it was time to finalize details, he started becoming more impatient with me and made me feel stupid for asking questions. I actually became reluctant to ask my own caterer questions becuse I felt like I was upsetting/bothering him. For me, this was stressful becuase you are a new bride and are doing your best to plan your event and expect people to be pleasant! Not difficult! The Friday of the week before the wedding, I gave Gary the final head count like he asked. He said he was working on the final billing and would send it over shortly. I finally got the bill Monday evening (3 days later) via email on my work email. Once I saw the final bill the next morning, I sent the check via SNAIL MAIL from Los Angeles since he refuses to take CC payments for final billing. 4 days later, the day of my wedding, as I am getting ready, I see an extrememly rude email from him claiming I needed to show up to the wedding with a late fee of almost $300. As a bride, the morning of your wedding while you are trying to get ready with your girls and be ontime, this is the last thing you want to deal with. I kindly responded saying I didnt understand the late fee since there was NO other way I could give him the check any earlier and did everything I could. He responded immediately in CAPS, basically yellling at me in email saying it was all my fault and that it's unacceptable, and other rude comments, etc. I have never been treated that way, especially by someone I was paying for services. Once we get to the wedding, the banquet manager was so nice and also didnt know why he was being so mean and she apologized for his behavior. But then, as I am down taking wedding pictures with my bridesmaids 1 hour before the wedding, I am interrupted by the banquet manager saying that if i dont give them an extra late fee check then they wont unload the food and cater my event. I had no choice but to fork over an extra $300 to save the day. I could not believe the audacity of this guy and how mean he was to me and that he didnt even care about the fact that it was my wedding day. His chef was also yelling and cussing at my brother in law! This is NOT customer service. Fact of the matter is, Gary had every single penny he was owed to cater my event and this was his way to scam me for more money by threatening me to ruin my day if I didnt give him more money. Have nothing but wonderful things to say about Phil's Catering! We had them cater our wedding on March 30th in Carpinteria. The staff was absolutely wonderful, so friendly and accommodating! Andy and is son Scott arrived early and worked so hard to have everything set up, I felt like they were apart of the family they were so kind and excited for the day! The rest of the staff was just as wonderful! They made sure as busy as we were as bride and groom we sat and ate and even assured our families were served first. Water glasses were never empty and dishes were cleared promptly. We weren't able to attend the cocktail hour but they had a server bring us appetizers during our photo session. In the days following the ceremony each server sent me a personal email thanking us for allowing them to serve our wedding! All of our guests continue to tell us how delicious the food was! We were so please to have Phil's Catering as part of our special day and would recommend them highly to anyone! We had appetizers out on the lawn in the Vineyard and then dinner in the carriage house and they transitioned without a flaw. We had a sit down dinner and they had everyone served fast so we could all eat salads and our entrees together. We had the reception right after dinner and that came off without a flaw. Services/Support prior to the event, 4 out of 5 (nothing terrible just a note below) The fresh grilled food on site was honestly some of the best wedding/event food we have ever had. It was just as good as our tasting. Everyone was so pleasant and helpful during the wedding from Setup to Clean Up. If any of the guests had a complaint, we are unaware and only heard good things! Leading up to the event though, 4 stars. We had some small misunderstandings along the way (were are probably partially to blame) but they came through in the end. We only mention this because if you need someone to help guide you with advice or to really hold you hand the whole way for planning the food/rentals/bar side of things, that is the only shortcoming of Phil's. Just be careful to be precise and very descriptive in exactly what you want to be safe, and review every detail closely. Like we said, everything went great day of, but don't rely on them to fill in any gray areas or point out any possible mistakes. We would recommend Phil's for catering, and would use them again in the future if we have another event on the Central Coast. read more

We used Phil's Catering for our wedding in Santa Margarita. I worked with Gary from the begining. He is quick to respond via email. Although he seems a little scattered at times. The food was great! Andy the chef was very nice! The servers & bartenders were excellent. Very friendly and helpful. Everyone was on time. Howevere 2 major things happend while working with Phil's: A majority of my guests did not get any cake. They were supposed to serve it and later I found out that they just announced that there was cake at the cake table. At the end of the night one of the servers told my maid of honor that the cake was thrown in the trash. When I asked what happened with my cake I got about 6 different responses such as stray cats ate it and it was dried out so it got tossed and there wasn't any left. Be very specific with your caterer on what you want to do with your left over cake. I still have no idea what happened to it. Also, they do not take credit cards for final payment. I struck a deal with Gary to use my credit card, paying the bank fees. He charged my card twice!!! a week apart from each other. For someone who doesn't take credit cards that is a pretty big screw up. It took over a week to get my credit for the 2nd charge put back on my visa. Don't trust them with your credit card. I'm not sure I would recommend them. Although the staff was awsome I stil can't get over the 2 charges on my credit card. read more

We had Phil's Catering cater our wedding dinner at the beginning of this month. BBQ Buffet- Tri-tip, chicken, potato salad, baked beans, mixed greens salad and rolls. Gary was great to work with, the food was wonderful, and the cost was reasonable. We chose them because my best friend used Phil's to cater her own wedding a couple years ago. If the food from Gary Vierra at Phil's Catering was awesome instead of merely adequate, one might tolerate his disrespectful, rude and downright nasty attitude. Unfortunately, it's not! Our recent wedding proved to be a great success in spite of the so so food. But it was Gary's demeanor on the phone with my wife that almost had me pulling the plug on the whole deal. He was insulting to her even as I listened in, firing barbs like: "Listen lady...." And: "I can't believe you owned a restaurant!" My wife not only owned a very successful French restaurant, Gary, but consistently received 4 stars from Michelin. No, Gary needs to learn that courtesy is not optional when dealing with clients. His ultra "prima-dona" whining on the phone made me sick. He's very lucky that he and I never actually met in person! His wife Cathy tried to apologize for her husband, and she did a decent job on the day of the wedding, as did her staff. But, for the money we paid, again - it was just merely OK. read more

Phil's Catering did a fantastic job serving 100 guests at The Pleasant Valley Wine Trail's Winemakers' dinner last Saturday! So many of our guests commented on how wonderful the food was - from strawberry spinach salad to salmon in puff pastry to braised short ribs with mashed potatoes. What was supposed to be cold was cold and the braised short ribs were hot, hot! The servers were friendly and attentive, keeping water glasses full and plates picked up. They were there for table set up and all the way thru clean up - until the last wine glass was picked up. I highly recommend them and would surely hire them again! read more

We used Phil's Catering for our wedding at the Kaleidoscope Inn. Their whole staff was extremely nice and on top of everything! Our guest enjoyed the appetizers and buffet dinner. They brought out some appetizers for us to have while we were taking pictures and unfortunately I was so busy I didn't get to try any (I think our family ended up eating them all haha).
