I thought seeing a bunch of plants might be fun but I wasn't expecting it to be such a wonderful experience! The place is quite large considering most of it is inside. It is organized for a few different environments and a little something for everyone depending on what your floral preferences might be. It took us about an hour and a half to go through the whole thing. Got a lot of pictures. Saw a lot of interesting and cool plants as well as beautiful flowers. Highly recommend this as a stop on any and every Pittsburgh trip.

I have attended a couple of events here (wedding, birthday) as well as regular visits. With over 65 acres, it was first established in 1988 and has certainly grown in leaps and bounds. It's a wonderfully peaceful and lovely garden that boasts walking paths, light shows (spectacular winter holiday displays), various exhibits, and more. So many plants and flowers to look at and smell. Everything you would expect a botanic garden to be. The last time I went home to Pittsburgh for a visit we took our dog with us and that was amazing. He loved it and I love that he was permitted to visit without issue at all. Everyone who works there is there for a reason, the love of nature and ensuring longevity.

I ordered a few plants at shadyside nursery during the lockdown, and was so pleased that I went back to shop very safely with masks and all when things started to open back up. They have great quality plants, and their staff knows their stuff! I got a lovely pepper plant that was already flowering and I had a pepper off of it within the week!!! The staff where very friendly and helpful. as it was basically the end of the season for azalea's there selection was not good. I also felt that there pricing especially on the azalea's where extremely expensive more than double the cost of home depot for similar size. I originally went to Cavacini Landscaping as the Home Depot near me had none left. I ended up leaving and going to another Home depot where I bought azalea's for half the price. Cavacini had a good selection of perennials but again pricey. If I was in a bind I would go back as the plants looked nice and the service was friendly and staff was helpful.

During this visit, I noticed the Dollhouse building has been completely redone. The new exhibit is much darker and heavier in tone, which honestly made me a little disappointed since the dollhouse installation used to be a staple of my visits and something I always looked forward to. The third building had construction going on on the first floor, but from what I could see it looks like it's going to be an incredible new display once it's finished. I was also a little sad to see the delayed recorder projector piece gone, but the new installation in its place was still interesting. One thing I still absolutely love is the water flowing down the handrails--it's such a small detail but always one of my favorite parts of the experience. Overall, it's still a place I enjoy visiting and seeing how the exhibits evolve over time.

I feel so much better supporting a store like this than a big box store whenever possible. They have an enormous selection of pretty much anything you could need. I have bought many of the trees and bushes in my yard here. They have usually been successful, but on the rare occasion one hasn't, they have stood by their warranty and offered a replacement. I had two dogwood trees fare poorly before coming to the conclusion that my location or soil simply wasn't right for that tree and replacing it with a weeping cherry from here, which is absolutely thriving. I also have a Koi pond and get all of my fish supplies here, including very nice water lilies every spring after I do a deep clean of my pond. They have all of the flowers, vegetables and herbs, mulches, soils and gardening tools you might be looking for. I sometimes find prices here to be just a dollar or two more expensive than some other places, but I don't mind when I'm supporting such a nice local store. Always staff available to help, which you just don't get at other places.
