    Not bad! I've been here a few times now because it's located near my friend's house in Crestwood! I like it. The star of the show here is the green onion cakes... BY FAR. They're amazing. If you see my attached pics you will see how round and perfect they are. They come out insanely hot though so watch out! I usually get the tofu vermicelli bowl, which is great for me. Lots of veggies and LOTS of tofu. I like the crunchiness of the tofu and its yummy! The staff here is friendly and helpful. You also get tea and water instantly when you sit down which I really like!

    This is my first time back in many years. It hasn't changed that much, the atmosphere and cleanliness have improved but are still questionable, and that's why I can't give it a better review. Service is okay. She's not very friendly, but we never lacked for anything. Plus I think she's the only one there. But the food is a five out of five. It really hits the spot! We had salad rolls and both of us had the vermicelli bowls. Soooo good. My shrimp and pork were charred to perfection. Okay, okay...I'll give it a four, because I'm going to be back. Soon. Especially for the price. Under $30 to stuff two half-starved people.

    After a couple of weeks off, my quest for better pho resumed. Today, I found this hole-in-the-wall place in the west end called Pho Binh; no pun intended, there really were holes on the wall inside the restaurant. The outside of the restaurant, with the shiny metallic signs, looks much better than the inside. The first impression was not good. Arrived for an early dinner, only the second table for the night, lots of time for the staffs to clean up after the lunch rush, half the tables were dirty. Only one person working, she was cleaning, cooking, taking orders and talking to her friends on the phone all at the same time. Not the greatest scene. Holes in the wall... the wall decorations have seen better days, most of the paintings/pictures were hung crooked and the wooden wall décor by my booth had fallen off, leaning on the table, leaving multiple holes on the wall. The lighting was dim, almost unpleasantly so. For someone who had eaten at the street markets and food carts throughout Asia, I have strong tolerance towards mediocre hygiene at Asian restaurants, yet, I hesitated looking at the utensil containers and condiment containers. I do not believe that they ever refrigerate their condiments. Looking inside the chili oil container, the chili oil looked like it has been sitting unattended for weeks, the chili had dried up and had stuck to the side of the container; even with an iron stomach, I chose not to touch the chili. The utensils were haphazardly thrown into the containers, the bottom of the container looked questionable. I chose to clean my chopsticks with tea before eating, a seldom occurrence for me. As I had mentioned, this is a one person operation, the lady was talking to her friends on the phone the entire time (only stopping to take a couple of take out orders), it took a while for my food to arrive, by pho standards anyway. I ordered #44, Pho with fatty flanks, brisket and tendons. For $11, the large bowl looked huge, filled with aromatic soup. First taste was good, it was good soup, hot and fresh. There is nothing spectacular about it, not quite the depth of flavour that a superior pho restaurant's soup would provide but definitely in the top quartile of the Edmonton Pho scale. An abundance of sprouts, basil and lime pieces were provided, but wait... where is my beloved fresh thai chili, sob, no thai chili. In the meat department, there were a lot of meat provided but may be not what I ordered. I was expecting tendons (yes, I found two pieces), I was expecting fatty flanks (ve don?, didn't find any), I was expecting briskets (yes that nice layered fatty marbled meat, none were found). Instead, I found loads of lean dry slices of cooked beef. If those were fatty flank slices, that was one LEAN cow, lol. Oh wait, I have a full bowl of soup, a huge pile of meat, but where is the noodle? Ah, at the bottom was a small clump of noodles, suitable for a child size bowl of pho but definitely not for a large bowl. The proportion of soup to meat to noodle is definitely off. Overall, I would compare eating at Pho Binh to eating at a street cart in Asia. The food is simple and reasonable; as long as you don't expect good service or good hygiene, you are good to go. Having said that, paying $11 at a Canadian sit-down restaurant, surrounded by dirty tables and broken decors, having a hostess/chef/server who talked on the phone with her friends full time (instead of doing the much needed cleaning of the restaurant); I cannot give the restaurant a high rating with a clear conscience. 2/5.

    Stick to hot stuff maybe. The green onion cakes are fantastic, as are the spring rolls. the soups are good but nothing special, still worth it though. however, don't go for unusual stuff or specialty items. I tried the shrimp mango salad and it's the first time i've left a meal from a restaurant untouched after a few bites. i don't know what i was expecting, but the dish pictured was not that. Soggy, gritty yet slippery, almost certainly canned mangoes plopped on a plate, in a bitter juice that smells alcoholic and vaguely like the bottle depot. Topped with rubbery, squeaky, and mushy shrimp, as bad as i felt i could not bring myself to have more. it was like $18 too give or take. so that was pretty disappointing. the one lady who serves and whatnot is pretty stern and unfriendly, it makes me a bit uneasy, like i'm not welcome here. i can get past that though. if i come back i'll stick to green onion cakes and spring rolls

This is one of my favourite vietnamese places for soup and appetizers. The rice and vermicelli dishes are mediocre in comparison so make sure to order what they specialize in. If I come with a big group I like to order as many appetizers as possible as it's similar to vietnamese street foods like crepes, tapioca dumplings and deep fried goodies. All of it is authentic and delicious. My must orders here are the duck salad and soup combo. It's what I come here for as no other place in edmonton has it on the menu that I know of. And it's pretty darn delicious. If I don't get that. The bun bo hue is loaded with so many meats that I never can finish it! I can't wait to go back to this locally owned business run by a family. Although service is not the greatest. They do provide whatever you need if you ask for it. They definitely won't bother you when you visit here. As most people just eat quick and leave. It's not one of those places you sit and chat and have drinks at. But for what they offer. It's affordable fast convenient and authentic. One of the best in edmonton!

The menu is very typical of Vietnamese noodle houses, featuring a good selection of pho noodle soup, vermicelli noodle bowls, and rice dishes. I opted for a bowl of pho with medium sliced beef and brisket. My soup was full of meat which was reasonably tender and lean, and came in a broth that was well-seasoned. Colleen, my co-Volunteer Coordinator, ordered a bowl of Thai spicy pho, and she ordered it without any meat. She was happy with the flavour of her soup and its abundance of noodles. I started with a green onion cake, finding the two large rings of fried dough and green onions to be large and not too greasy, as well as a bit cheaper than I've had elsewhere. I also decided to do something I rarely do when I order pho - even though I find the complimentary green tea and broth from the soup to be more than enough liquid intake for one meal, I decided to try one of the iced drinks. Being a dreary winter day I felt some extra vitamin C was in order, and opted for a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. It was incredibly fresh and full of pulp - I literally felt like I was drinking an orange in liquid form. Prices are in line, if not lower, than other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Our entire meal, which also included a can of pop for Colleen, cost less than $25 before the tip. Service was fast and friendly and neither of us had any complaints about the food. Winter is the perfect time for a steaming bowl of pho, so consider heading to Viet Huong.

XO Bistro + Bar throws their name into the ring with a more elevated and modern Vietnamese dining experience, demonstrating that there's a sophisticated side to Viet food that demands representation as well. VUE Weekly loved this restaurant and named them #1 Best Vietnamese, #1 Best Late Night/All Night, and #1 Best Happy Hour in 2018. First opened in 2017 and now with two locations, I visited the original Downtown spot on a Saturday evening, anxiously anticipating the symphony of flavours ahead. XO Bistro is in good company on Edmonton's famous boardwalk street which is lined with a collection of many popular restaurants. The parking is a nightmare and the small handful of street parking spots always seem to be taken. But you'll figure it out. With its proximity to the ICE District you can easily imagine that this restaurant has been able to take advantage of the pre-game dinner crowd and post-game spillover from the Moss Pit. The restaurant is larger than you might imagine, with its soaring second-storey ceiling and filled with dark moody finishes and an impressive bar completing the lounge vibe. However, the real show-stopper is the life-sized cherry blossom tree right in the entranceway, covered in pink blossoms. This tree serves as a major focal point and it's difficult to take your eyes off of it! The servers are cheerful and friendly, and although there were no window tables available we were seated comfortably. Priding themselves on their cocktail program, I knew that an XO Original was a must and soon I found the Good Morning Vietnam (Gin, Soho, hibiscus, lime juice, lychee puree - $15.00) in my hand. A cocktail to match the restaurant perfectly! I loved that this beverage was fresh and fruity and wasn't too strong. Pretty and drinkable, the sweet flavour of lychee took the lead while tart notes from the lime and hibiscus leveled the beverage out. Without a doubt, the correct drink to sip on under the blush-hued blooms! XO Bistro's goal is to serve food that isn't always traditional but is always authentic. Bold, balanced flavours inspired by the everyday energy of Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, and Da Nang. The liveliness and fresh takes are apparent on the menu right away and I was excited to order some dishes that felt new. Starting with appetizers, the Double Trouble (Rice paper, shrimp, lettuce, vermicelli, tangy fish sauce. Choice of pork or veggie spring roll - $11.25) stood out as something fun to try. Can't choose between a spring roll or a fresh roll? Get both! I loved this playful version and especially enjoyed getting to eat two types of rolls instead of just one! We chose the pork spring roll for the inside and I loved the textural crunch and juicy pork that it provided. Meanwhile, the outside was wrapped in rice paper, acting as a window to the shrimp enveloped within. Dunking each bite into the zippy fish sauce added just the right acidity. Wonderfully tasty, so much fun to eat, and striking presentation to boot! Another item that really caught my eye was the Bone Marrow (Roasted bone marrow, panko crust, toasted baguette, pâté - $19.00). A dish that I love but only come across seldomly. Now this was a dish that I certainly did not expect. But boy did I love it! Roasting the marrow topped with a crust of seasoned panko was inspired - a genius way to add texture (and more flavour) to an otherwise fairly gelatinous ingredient. Bread is such a huge component to Vietnamese cuisine (think bánh mì) because of the French colonization in the 1800s. The Viet people then proceeded to transform this bread into a completely new, localized culinary staple. The baguette at XO Bistro was absolute fresh, housemade(?) perfection. Crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside. I loved slathering the bread with ample amounts of delicious pâté (another "gift" from the French) and then topping it all off with spoonfuls of rich bone marrow. Each bite exemplified decadence and I reveled in it. This might very well have been the best bone marrow preparation that I've ever had. Vietnamese food might be one of the earlier examples of fusion cuisine, and while colonization sucks the food admittedly does not. XO Bistro provides everything that you know and love in terms of main dishes; from bánh mì to phở (there's even a "phở challenge" where if you eat an obscenely-sized bowl in 45 minutes you get a prize) to bún. But the staff would not allow discounted prices despite it only being 6pm. They had decent options like wine, beer or a customized cocktail for $4. The server states happy hour is over despite it clearly stating it is until 7pm on the menu. I point to the board and he says it's full price. Whatever. I don't like misrepresentation on menus. And discrepancys are misleading. For this I minused a star. Service was haphazard. I seated myself. Got my own condiments and even got my own drinks. I had to go to the counter to order my food and pay at the register. All the server did was put the food on my table and clean it up afterwards. The whole process downgraded the whole modern vibe to more of a cafeteria style establishment. I felt jipped tipping bc i basically served myself. So minus another star. Overall. The food was great. Slightly overpriced. But the atmosphere reflects the price in the heart of downtown. Service was okay but the whole happy hour misrepresentation was a huge turnoff. The combos they offer are a rice or noodle (pad thai that didn't look very appetizing) and then up to 3 or 4 items. The food was under heat lamps so I could see what the options were. I decided to get the fried rice and a few items. I choose a chicken first and looked at the other items before deciding on the vegetables with cashews. The woman serving me had the rectangle take out container about 2/3 full and she kept suggesting food such as the green beans and then the sweet and sour pork. Both didn't look very appetizing. I think she was hoping I would pay for as much food to get rid of since the lunch time crowd had passed but she wasn't generous with the quantity. I decided on the beef skewer and then was done. At half price I paid $7.35. I brought the food home and heated it up. I liked the beef skewer but the rest of the food wasn't very good. The food tasted greasy and I had to use my fingers to eat the chicken was it had lots of bones. I'm not sure if it's from this food, but I didn't feel well after. Definitely would not pay $14 for the food I had as lots of other great restaurants around. It would probably be better to go during the lunch hour when the food is hot and fresh but I'll pass next time I'm in the area.
