I worked in Laveen for many years and drove past this location on 91st Ave hundreds of times but did not know about the Tres Rios Wetlands until a friend suggested it for a fishing outage. The first recommendation I will make is to bring/leave nothing of value in your vehicle. This is a high-crime area of Phoenix and the "parking lot" for Tres Rios is essentially just the shoulder of the main road. There have been several police reports filed at this location for vehicles being burglarized and catalytic converters being stolen. Secondly, a permit is required to park/use Tres Rios. The permits are free and available through the Tres Rios Wetlands page on the Phoenix.gov site. Each permit is good for a 6-month block. I have no idea if there is any enforcement action taken against non-permit holders but the consequence is a class 5 felony for trespassing on government land per multiple signs posted all over the park. Finally, if you went through the trouble of obtaining a permit and driving here just to fish, you may have set yourself up for disappointment. The actual wetlands sanctuary area that is advertised on the website is completely off limits to the public (including permit holders) and is surrounded by a 7 ft barbwire fence. The only area where fishing is actually permitted is a small strip of water outside of the sanctuary. The area is not maintained and it is completely surrounded by thick 6ft tall reeds and grass with only 3-4 gaps over about a half mile about the width of a single person. Maybe I went during wrong season, but the ground was covered in swarms of millions of ants crossing the pathway. Be careful what you put down on the ground or where you stand as you're likely to be covered in ants. If you're here to walk, hike, or birdwatch, I'm sure this location is beautiful gem in the desert thats full of wildlife. If you're here to fish it's unfortunately a big disappointment.

If your…read moreemployer pays you for the day, you get a day to surf your phone or read a book or just hang out and not think while you are waiting in the jury room to be possibly called. I've done jury duty in San Diego and now in Phoenix. This is the first time I had to report in as opposed to my group number not having to show up and being excused. The worst part for me is driving downtown but my hubby drove me so that was good. On the jury summons they show you where to park and they validate the parking so it is free for you. The jury room where you wait is actually a good size room with somewhat comfortable chairs. Tip - there is a row of chairs on the side of the room that have the outlets for plugging in your electronics. There are other places available to plug in, but these are convenient. Only bad thing is those seats get claimed fast so show up early! The court system really tries to make the experience very favorable and not too much of a hardship. There is a kitchen area where coffee is made and you can make tea. There are vending machines for water and soft drinks plus a fountain you can get purified water from free of cost (no charge for coffee or tea either). There's a microwave and a fridge if you need to heat up something for lunch if you are there. Bathrooms are located in the jury lounge too. You have the freedom to get up and go outside while you are waiting as long as it is limited to 15 minutes and you sign out and then cross your name off when you get back in. All in all not a bad experience! There were only 2 cases the day I had to appear and both cases were settled without going to trial so we were all excused by about 10:15 a.m. They say I won't be called for at least 18 months before having to report again for jury duty, but I wouldn't mind if it was sooner. Staff is very friendly and helpful! Nice touch to have the judge come in and thank us for our service and explain the process to us.

You can go in, talk with the docent, and take your time studying all the different works as quiet music plays. I have seen several shows of American art in the permanent museum and a temporary show from Ireland? Scotland? in another room. The Powers That Be make sure to always have something to make it worth your while to come in and spend some time here. Don't forget the sculptures outside on the grounds.

We drove up to Dobbins Lookout, and that's where it really hits. Phoenix spreads out in every direction, a grid of life pressed up against open desert, with mountains rising in the distance like they've been quietly watching the whole thing unfold. It's not subtle. It's big, raw, and a little humbling. What makes this place stand out is how much it offers without trying to package itself too neatly. You can hike, bike, ride horseback, or just stay in the car and take the scenic drive. It works for everyone. We had a mix of people, some ready to tackle trails, others perfectly happy just soaking in the views, and nobody felt out of place. The trail system is extensive. You've got everything from easy, walkable paths to longer, more demanding routes like the National Trail, which stretches over 15 miles and cuts through a huge portion of the park. It's the kind of place where you can come back multiple times and still find something new. We did some light hiking, nothing too aggressive, but even then you feel the terrain. It's not forgiving, and that's part of the appeal. The desert has a way of reminding you to pay attention. Loose rock, uneven footing, the occasional reminder that you're sharing the trail with horses. It keeps you honest. Timing matters out here. Go early. Not just to beat the heat, which you absolutely should, but because the light in the morning does something different. It softens the landscape, pulls out color and texture that gets washed out later in the day. By midday, the sun is in full control and it's a different experience entirely. A few practical notes. Bring more water than you think you need. Then add a little more. Wear actual boots, not something you don't mind slipping around in. And keep an eye on the trail, especially on the multi-use sections. You'll know why pretty quickly. What I appreciated most is how accessible it is. You're minutes from the city, and suddenly you're in this wide, open space that feels removed from everything. No overdevelopment, no forced attractions. Just desert, sky, and distance. It's not polished, and it's not trying to be. That's exactly why it works. Five stars without hesitation.

I most recently stopped by on a Saturday afternoon for a hike. A couple of highlights to share. If you stop by their Visitor's Center, they have a mini museum where you can learn about the park e.g. the animals and plants that inhabit it; the fact that it's indigenous land, and the history of the park. The VC is air conditioned and they also have bathrooms and various pamphlets/brochures you can take with you. From there, perhaps the most famous hike is Holbert Trail. An hour and a half or so on this moderate trail (if you choose this fork in the road) will take you to Dobbins Lookout. The work you put in will take you to one of the most popular nature stops in town offering stunning scenic views of the city. After hanging out around Dobbins for a bit, an hour or so will take you back to your starting point. Making it a three hour hike or so. Beyond Holbert Trail and Dobbins Lookout, you have other cool things to check out at this Park. And all of it is for free. With easy parking. Enjoy!

Additionally, they have jazz clubs, theatre, and plenty of attractions. If you're looking for great food, I had tasty brunches and yummy Mexican cuisine. There's also many more options like Halal, Thai, Indian, Italian and much more. I value an inclusive city and this is one of them! Parking isn't insane like other places and there's free activities for families.

Located in South Mountain Park, Dobbins offers picturesque views of Phoenix and surrounding areas. There are two ways to get there: (1) you can take the easy way and take a scenic drive up to a parking lot right next to Dobbins or (2) take Holbert Trail to Dobbins which will be about an hour an a half hike. Naturally, I took the more difficult route and was rewarded for my efforts with all that Dobbins has to offer. You'll see people sitting on the various benches and ledges to enjoy the views. You'll see people snapping pics. And you'll even see vendors in the parking lot selling Native American art and jewelry, drinks, and snacks. While I wasn't there during sunset, I hear it's a spectacular place to come at that time.
