The Piazza della Minerva is a small plaza near the Pantheon, named for an ancient temple that once stood on site, dedicated to the goddess Minerva. We stayed at the Orient Express La Minerva, which overlooks the piazza, and enjoyed seeing and wandering this lovely public space.
The main points of interest are the Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva and the Elephant and Obelisk statue at the center of the square. The basilica is beautiful and easy to visit, free and not especially popular with tourists. The Elephant and Obelisk is a 1667 statue by Bernini, incorporating the smallest of the thirteen ancient Egyptian obelisks in Rome, found buried in a garden by the church in 1665. The statue is a cutie as well as a priceless work of art.
We didn't sit around the Piazza della Minerva, but it seemed like a nice spot to hang out for a bit, maybe on the steps at the base of the elephant. It's less of a town square than the larger piazzas, but well worth a stop as you explore central Rome. read more
