Bc I'm obsessed with all things Victorian, I was so looking forward to visiting Pickwick's! And while it was a fun little shop, it didn't really have much "Victorian" stuff as I was expecting after reading about it online. So I was a little disappointed (and why I'm giving 4 stars and not 5). But overall I'm glad I came - the staff was so friendly and helpful! And I did walk away with a great bottle of perfume at such a good price! A large bottle of orangey-smelling loveliness for only about $30 called Fiori d'Arancio by Lilla and Gelsomino...It's very fresh and citrus-y!! Parking was a little difficult - pay-to-park street parking and spaces are very limited. I didn't see any other options but it was a quick visit. It's mostly little nicknacks, bags, perfumes and soaps and stuff like that. They did have a few Victorian style hair clips and notepads/journals, but that was about it. Oh and the staff are dressed Victorian style so that was cool! If I'm ever back in the area, I want to try out their soda shop/restaurant called Fezziwigs! read more

This shop is super cool to go in to and walk around (that's why I gave 4 stars and not less) but the girl that was working was very unpleasant and I felt like she just watched us the whole time to make sure we weren't trying to steal anything. She was dressed up in an almost villainous outfit so maybe that's how she's suppose to act? Festive, fragrant, and fun gift shop in downtown Portsmouth. It's jam packed with lots of novelty items, including housewares, perfumes, clothing, and jewelry. I spent a bit of time in the lotions and soaps They have testers for most products. Of course, if you go wild with sniffing lots of products, the smells all start to blend together. But their selection is very large, and the packaging for the products is very elegant. They also have a nicely-sized selection of baby and kids items, like coloring books a small toys. There was one central table display of only candles. When I most recently visited, the store was super decorated for the upcoming Halloween holiday. With a crowd in the store, it felt a little stifling, but I do appreciate the enthusiasm! read more

They were very friendly and always offering to help me with anything I needed. The store had so many niche and cool things including perfumes, waxes and seals, author-scented-candles, corsets, jewelry, the list goes on! Pickwick's Mercantile is a relatively new store on State Street, surrounded by the construction of The Rosa and the new Memorial Bridge. It seems to be a shop full of candles, incense, and various gifts. I heard voices coming from the back, but I guess I don't look like a customer because no one came out to help me even though I wandered around for a while. This might be an interesting store to visit when the holidays get close but I don't think I'll be going back before then. They need to get their act together and acknowledge when someone walks in the store. Beyond that, the over abundance of competing fragrances was awful. One good thing about Pickwick's, their early web site is really attractive although it's actually just a good looking "under construction" sign. If the full web site is as nice, I'm sure it will help bring people to the store. I'm going to assume that I hit the store on a bad day and give them three stars, but I had really expected to be treated a little better. read more

Pickwicks is a place I have brought so many friends to visit, it's a must shop every time I'm in the area (although I have made trips to the area just to go to Pickwicks). As you walk in you are greeted by a costumed shopkeeper, and as one other reviewer said, it is definitely filled to the brim with beautiful things. They literally put things behind things, behind things. And that doesn't feel cluttered to me, just that you have to look deeper. If you just breeze through you will still find something great, but you'll miss so much. It isn't (as the same reviewer said) dark, but it isn't a bright and sterile store either. It's warm, welcoming. From $700 leather goods to $1 imported candies, there is a huge price range. This is my go to place to find a gift, whether I want to spend a lot of time and money, or not much of either. You can get an entire gift, or something small as an add-on to finish off a gift you already have. No matter what you choose, it is (or comes off as) completely thoughtful. Nothing from here ever disappoints the recipient. The shop keepers are super knowledgable. They all have special Pickwicks pseudonyms- Bailiwick, Valentine, Thistle, Knewton, etc- and are all really eager to help. One of my favorite recreational activities is to go to Thistle, and ask her to help me find a new perfume. It sounds silly, but listening her talk about scent is intoxicating. I've spent way too much money in this section of the store alone. A wonderful and colorful shop filled with all sorts of treasures. The folks that work here are so kind and helpful. I had questions about some of the stones that they have and they were kind and knowledgeable in their explanations. I also purchased some notebooks for my husband, which he loved. The store appears very interesting and to have some neat items, however, this was my family's first time visiting and the worker was beyond rude and unwelcoming. She not only quipped that no pictures or videos are allowed in the store (no signs stating this are posted by the way) but also acted annoyed when my grandmother was asking about a product. I really loved the store and what they sold. However it was too small for the number of employees and how many times I was approached and persuaded to buy things. It ruined the experience and every time I pointed something out to someone a store employee ran over and told me how great it was. I have been into Pickwick's many, many times and every time I go in it's different. Here are 10 reasons to love Pickwick's: 1) The employees dress in beautiful costumes. My suspicion is they are all handmade with love and attention to detail. Not something you see every day! 2) The employees are so sweet and friendly. They are always there if you have questions or need help. Very down to earth and fun. And it seems like they actually enjoy their jobs...also a rarity. 3) The ever-changing merchandise is unique and much of it is exclusive items that can't be found anywhere else in the area. The owner does her homework for sure! 4) Perfumes. If you like perfumes, she finds amazing scents. 5) Family friendly! Every time I tell my children we're going to Pickwick's, they get very excited. Often the owner has offered them some free candy. But the children's merchandise is fun and unique. My son bought an old-fashioned weaving loom and is currently making a small rug. My daughter bought some drawing supplies. They both love it there! 6) Woman owned! I personally like to see successful, well-thought out businesses owned by women. GO RITA! 7) SUPPORTIVE OF THE COMMUNITY! The owner is constantly supporting the arts and other community events. 8) Men's and women's merch. From shaving kits, to bangle bracelets, to one-of-a-kind flannels, to socks, to Brie bakers, to books, to toy boats, there's something for everyone! 9) The owner has a long background in design so just stopping in and seeing the displays is worthwhile! 10) Keeping Portsmouth interesting. Cute store but they need to do something about the woman that works there (dressed in victorian) - we walked in one evening and you could not look or touch anything without her popping up over your shoulder to "tell" you about the item. Literally watches you like a hawk to the point where you'd rather leave than purchase anything. Used to be a much better experience but this new woman is a total loon. Not only is there clothing store absolutely adorable with gorgeous pieces, their customer service can not be beat. Recently on a trip to Portsmouth, I was shopping with my mother and thought I had put my wallet back into my purse, it must have slipped out and fell somewhere in Pickwick's. Went here for a gift for my fiance. Loved it. First of all the store is packed, packed, packed with unique merchandise: one-of-a-kind perfumes, kick knacks, beautiful rehabbed flannel, old-timey candy, the list goes on. I ended up picking up a perfumed oil at the suggestion of the manager that I had not seen sold anywhere else. It was a hit. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and dressed to the nines in what I think is Mid-to-Late Victorian garb with a twist. It's definitely a cool effect. There were some pirates playing tunes outside too. If you're into unique merchandise and ambiance definitely check this place out. They are probably doing the best job of anyone in keeping Portsmouth nice and weird. read more

I spent summer 2013 in Portsmouth, and once a week i would go and check out Pickwicks. So much awesome stuff with unique items to fit every budget, and fun things to save up and splurge on. Everyone who works there is so nice, and helpful. I picked up a small stuffed giraffe for my new born nephew last July. This spring I got a phone call that my nephew dropped it and they could not find it. My brother had to get another one as it is my nephews favorite, but they live in southern California and I live in upstate New York. My brother called Pickwicks and was able to two new giraffes shipped out to them! I was surprised at this level of customer service, but I should not have been! They are just great! read more

My boyfriend and I love to go to Portsmouth from Boston every year to shop for unusual Christmas gifts that you might not find everywhere else. Unfortunately, we both works nights and therefore aren't very good at getting there early and most of the stores close at six. We don't always get to look at all of the shops outside the main area before our shopping comes to an abrupt end. This Sunday, long after most shops closed, we came upon a warm and inviting Pickwick's. The sign on the door said they closed at 6 and it was at least 7, so I stood an gazed longingly into the shop door wishing I had seen the shop earlier - it looks like Christmas magic inside. The next thing I knew, the friendly and festively dressed shop ladies were inviting us in, saying they still had lots of work to do before they could leave, so we were welcome to have a browse! They even offered to gift wrap some little things we picked out and one of the ladies helped me to hide a gift I was buying for my boyfriend while he wasn't looking! Great little shop with so many fun things, but I was really inspired to write this because I was really impressed at the level of customer service and the "going beyond the call of duty". Very special thing in a world where most people don't care to go the extra mile anymore. The whole experience sent us home with some real Christmas spirit! Give those ladies a raise! :) read more

Love this place. When you come in, it feels less like you're walking into a store and more like you're stepping into a fictional romantic past. The decor is cozy--lots of wood, and fabric and twinkle lights draped from the ceiling. You can find things here that you never knew you needed--perhaps a tin camping mug with a unique print, a vintage plaid flannel shirt, an imported leather-and-canvas bag from Italy, a gourmet Hammond candy bar, a piece of Victorian/Edwardian-inspired jewelry, or a perfume by niche fragrance houses such as D.S. & Durga, CB I Hate Perfume, or Molinard. It is absolutely full of unique, interesting, beautiful kinds of gifts.(Holy amazing perfumes and candles! I bought the Marine candle and the Mermaid perfume). I bought trendy Kiel Patrick bracelets for my teen daughter andthe most delicious vanilla perfume for her. I have my heart set on the coolest kitchen serving things. The toys, candy, exquisite perfumes and wonderful clothes (and bags!) along with the vintage dressed girls in the store make this place memorable. LOVE IT! read more

I am in heaven! Last year I found a gorgeous rollerball violette scent by Royal Apothic and came in today to get more. That particular scent was no longer available, and I am REALLY obsessed with violet floral perfumes, and thank the Lord Wesley helped me out!! He was so very sweet and helpful and I just love him to pieces. He made me feel so welcome and didn't give up searching for the perfume violet perfume for me. He helped me decide on Molinard's violette perfume, made in Paris, at a wonderful $65 price point for 75 ml! This was an enormous deal. I honestly want to get a job here just so I can talk pretty things and florals all day with this marvelous man. Excellent customer service, great upselling without being pushy at all, while making me feel extremely welcome and more like a guest than any old customer. Bravo!! read more

This business stands behind its products. I purchased a beautiful purse six months ago and it did not wear well. I am from out of town and when I went back into the store and showed the owner, she immediately offered a replacement bag or store credit. She could not have been more polite and inviting.
