Potato Gnocchi with cherry tomatoes and chorizo.
    James R.

After dining at Pawpaw Cafe numerous times, I was really looking forward to having a meal at Picnic Cafe, however my experience wasn't what I had anticipated. The cafe is very well laid out in setting, and is very comfortable to meet with friends or family. Being tucked away in Camp Hill, there is little to no traffic noise to worry about. I ordered the Potato Gnocchi with cherry tomato and chorizo - which was a little extra on the bill - but it was definitely worth it. My girlfriend had the same meal and really enjoyed it also. We had ordered some cold drinks with our meals, which unfortunately never arrived at the table. This was a little disappointing, however we did finish the complimentary water on the table pretty early and wasn't offered another. Another slight disappointment was the fact one of the waitresses basically "dropped" our meals onto the table in front of us and walked away. Not the kind of professionalism you'd like in hospitality, especially in an almost empty cafe setting. Apart from the few hiccups here and there, the food was very nice and I'd like to try them again sometime. It won't be on the top of my list, though.

Personally, Picnic is a location that I like to refer to as a 'brunch safe space.' Often when I'm asked to go out to brunch, regardless if it is by a family member, friend or staff from work, Picnic is always an easy choice. I love the fluidly changing menu that will always include a few classic favourites, such as the 'Hash Benny' and the 'Sweet Chilli Chicken Tacos'. If you're after something different, it's quite often their specials board will have something intricate and exciting, such as an 'Iced Vovo Hot Chocolate'. Picnic is welcoming, and a comfortable environment for which I know that customers are willing to wait outside for 10 minutes for. Tables can sometimes require a little wait time, however it is definitely worth the wait. I highly recommend coming during the week to enjoy a Rainbow Latte to add a little fun to your day. On a more personal note, I love coffee, however I've never been a large fan of Picnic's brew, however I'll often grab a hot chocolate or something to fill in! My friends all enjoy their caramel lattes!

Ham hock baked beans and mushrooms on sourdough.

We had breakfast at Picnic on the Sunday of a long weekend, and due to some new buzz there was a (short) queue for a table at 8:30 - so much for thinking we got in early! No matter, it was worth the wait. There were some good solid choices that made it hard to pick, but the sourdough with beans and mushrooms and the picnic board won out in the end. The house made ham hock baked beans were so tasty, they were my pick of the day. The eggs on the picnic board were perfectly poached and accompanied by house baked shaved ham, a half an avo, herbed feta and a tomato relish. All super yum. Even though it was served on a board. Although we were seated on one of the two little tables outside, we weren't ignored with staff regularly checking on us. I'll definitely be coming back. I must try the green piña colada smoothie - it looked and sounded fabulous!

I have never been to a cafe before where I have had to put my name on a list just to get a table!! Thankfully for my stomach we didn't have to wait long to get a table. The food was amazing!!! I had the smashed avocado with extra haloumi (of course)! The Beetroot hummus was the special ingredient that made this better than your usual smashed avo!! I would definitely come here again!

It's easy to see why Picnic has become so popular just weeks after their opening. A relaxed atmosphere and excellent food make it great for a relaxed brunch with the family, and perfect for a casual dinner and drinks with friends. Personally, they had me at salted caramel milkshake, but for the healthier minded there are also peanut butter protein shakes. Faultless service and delicious baked goodies also help! Will definitely revisit.

Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? While my server at The Yiros Shop seemed to be no older than sixteen, he was very polite and efficient, and explained my options to me in a way that directed me towards some good options. I was disappointed that they didn't accept American Express, but I'm finding that's pretty common in Australia. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $15.50 AUD got me a pretty good sized mixed meat yiro, which was a pretty good deal even though, as you'll see, they skimped on the meat a bit. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? I'll start off by saying that I liked the selection of meats and peripherals at The Yiros Shop, and it was clear that these were some fresh ingredients. Having said that, I felt a bit robbed of those fresh looking meats, and instead my mixed meat yiro was packed with french fries, tahini sauce, and vegetables with a notable lack of meats. That's not uncommon I suppose, but something to keep an eye on. Single Star. Star 5: Would you be excited to go back? The Yiros Shop was good, but there are so many great kebab or comparable options in town that I can't recommend The Yiros Shop with any sort of enthusiasm. No Star.

It's such a beautiful space, from the 7.5m brass bar, custom glazed porcelain lights, back lit shelves, & a charcuterie cabinet at the end of the bar (which will form the basis for a very simple menu in the coming weeks). Maker's menu has a strong focus on Australian wines, beer, and spirits; with the sophisticated cocktail menu an adventurous interplay of flavours, like nothing you'll find anywhere else in Brisbane.Prepared with flair, artistry, & unique techniques, having a cocktail at Maker is a feast for the senses. Try the "Whisky Wax Coffee", a combination of Whisky, coffee, beeswax, pollen, macadmia ($22), and watch how it's prepared. Served in artisan glassware with sphere ice-cubes, & some of the famous black garlic bread from Gauge. We also tried the Starward (Australian) whisky as well as another cocktail not on the menu. It's one of the main benefits of being in such a small bar, that one can have meaningful conversations with the bartender, request a cocktail based on your particular flavours, adding to the overall bespoke experience. Maker has arrived, and it is a game changer.

We had not eaten at the HP for quite some time, and were quite impressed with the quality of the food. The chef/s did a great job. Now the negatives. I decided to book because we wanted to get in early so as to be home early. I booked a table for 6pm. When we arrived the place was almost full. But that was ok because I had booked. We stood in the middle of the bistro waiting to be directed to our table, but there was nobody around. A young waiter eventually came to us and I told him we had a booked for 3. He eventually found our booking, but the table had been taken by somebody else. We eventually were shoved into the very far corner, which did have a reserve sign on it, so we must have got someone else's reserved table. We then ordered our meals and a round of drinks through the app. It took so long to get our drinks, so we went to the bar and got them ourselves. The food took almost a hour to arrive. There were not enough staff. Not enough waiters. Not enough bar staff. Not enough kitchen staff. The whole idea of booking was to get in early and get home early. I visited the HP about a month of so ago with a group of workmates. We sat in the bistro bar area. The bar service was extremely slow that night also. There was one lady whose English was very poor and a young lad who said it was his first night. Patrons were waiting a long time that night and were getting quite agitated. That night I put it down to teething problems with the new reno. But a month and a half later ... and staff issues are still apparent.

If you can get in between 7.30-8.30am, the coffee comes in at an astounding $2 for the regular (single shot) size. Cold pressed iced coffees and iced chocolates are also available in the fridge. The place has a warm suburban feel, and the staff are exceedingly friendly. Despite being staffed by a single person, the service is prompt and quick. Dog friendly, though the dogs are kept outside.
