During my time in the UK, I knew absolutely nothing about where to shop. That changed quickly when…read morethe homie Shay M. was hooking it up with the hints on where to go for some of the good stuff you can only find out here! Enter... ASDA!! It's a grocery store, but this particular location has 2 stores under 1 roof. The Home Bargains store houses "hardline" items as well as a few food and drinks options. It's here at this location that I was able to find and snag the well-known English cookies (or "biscuits" as they're locally called) which are branded as "Digestives." I do believe these can be found in San Diego's Shakespeare restaurant and store, but they're probably limited on flavors and guaranteed to cost more. While here, I found some of the hot sauces Shay told me about. I have a friend who loves hot sauce, so I'll be gifting that to her along with other yummies. The Cadbury chocolate tub was also here, and on sale. 2 tubs for £9!! That's an unbeatable price! There's a small selection of fruits and veggies and also fresh flower bouquets. I love the prices at these grocery stores. If I lived here, I wouldn't worry too much about sales, but the ones they do have make the prices even more amazing! Gotta love it here at ASDA! Get your shop on and save a grip of money doing it! ;)

Last Saturday, I approached 3 different members of staff with different enquiries I needed resolving. I can only say they went above and beyond what I expected and remedied all my requirements . Many thanks to you all. I had earlier visited the instore Opticians, my original reason for attending the store and was served by a young lady, Kia. She was obviously well informed and trained. A credit to all trainers and recruiters at the store. I have never thought this before but I left feeling as if I was a truly valued customer, due to Kia and her 3 colleagues. I can only recommend visiting this store as it makes shopping a pleasant experience and not the usual chore. I hope the store general manager and department head take note of this review.

Parbold Fruit & Veg is a greengrocers owned and managed by the Italian-English Patitucci family. I…read morehighly recommend this place - I buy most of my fresh produce from here. Delivery is free of charge within a five mile radius, or you can visit the shop. The 'shop' is a 'no-frills' affair, a double garage at the rear of the Patitucci family home. So you can rest assured that you are not paying through the nose for expensive premises - no, sir! Their produce is of four grades - Regular, Local, Organic and Paolo's. 'Paolo's' denotes produce grown in the greenhouses and market gardens to the rear of the garage - as far as I know, I would consider it a sort of 'uncertified organic' as my information is that Paolo does not use chemical pesticides, etc. Paolo is the grandfather of the family, who moved from southern Italy to Lancashire in 1955, and is as devoted a market gardener as you could hope to find. Here is an article I found about Paolo Patitucci in the local newspaper http://www.osadvertiser.co.uk/news/ormskirk-news/2009/09/10/parbold-gardener-paulo-patitucci-s-back-with-his-gigantic-green-beans-80904-24645160/ So basically, all the fruit and vegetables are at least good quality, with a lot of it winning extra brownie points for being local and fresh. Plus, with Paolo's characterful vegetables and herbs, and additional organic market produce, the super-healthy niche market is well catered for. They also stock a nice selection of organic delicatessen items, plus homemade jams, etc. The business side of things is now run by Paolo's son Vince, who is another fantastic gentleman. From what I've seen of him, I would say Vince is a bit of a dude. Such as - when it was still glass milk bottles - carrying two crates of milk in each hand. Without braggadocio. Lastly, they are totally fair and honest, which is a boon when buying fresh produce.

The gigantic counter displays a myriad of delicious cheeses, hams, olives, pates, anti-pasti and salads whilst the nearby baskets display fresh sticks and loaves of bread. To top it off, they have dozens of wooden shelves groaning with all kinds of lovely store cupboard treats from organic granola, cereals and cookies to oat cakes, chutneys, olive oils, vinegars, sauces and spices. This review is for the upstairs restaurant area - and sadly it is not a good one. One Saturday…read morelunchtime, I popped in for a light lunch. Nothing complicated - in the end, I ordered a Greek salad and a plate of Serrano ham rather than the pricier mains on the blackboards. I'm not sure how two really basic things could be so disappointing. I think it's because on the surface, this looks like a place that prides itself on sourcing and attention to detail. On the specials during my visit were such items as hand foraged local samphire, Cumbrian lamb and Pink's award winning sausages. So why was the Greek salad about 50% raw onion? Why did it feature those mealy crunchy supermarket basics tomatoes, cold from the fridge? Even the black olives mentioned on the menu were green. And they clearly did have black olives in the kitchen, because my four slices of Serrano ham (almost £6) came topped with a single olive. They boasted it was "20 month aged" - most of it had clearly been in their fridge, as it featured a faint tang of refrigerator and managed to be unpleasantly rubbery. Not sure how Serrano ham can even go rubbery but there you go. If you've boasting of excellent ingredients then it's unacceptable for the basics to fail so badly. I wouldn't bother returning.

Never officially disbanded the Sandwich Bureau was moved to more modest digs on Liverpool's Wood Street and began serving its delicious range of paninis, baguettes and salads. My own personal favourite has to be their filled bin-lid barm cakes which are a soft tasty treat which are probably big enough to share (although I've never offered anyone a bite). Rumour has it that these were also the favourites of Lord Churchill himself and he would often have one of these before washing it down with half a bottle of champagne and a gigantic cigar before bursting into the war room each day.

Yum Yum's have three menus really - a standard cold one (sandwiches, wraps, etc), a standard hot one (hot sandwiches, burgers, etc) and a specials menu, which is emailed around each morning around 9am. I normally ordered off the specials menu - not because the hot and cold ones were rubbish, but Fred's (I assume the owner!) little comments about each item were just great and made you want your lunch before half 9. (Fred's comments were often the highlight of the first hour at work!) The food was always very good from there, although slightly more expensive (iirc) than their competitors. The cafe itself is ok, althought the queue often snakes out of the door (goodness knows why) so the interior is often cold. If you want something for lunch then there are plenty of alternative places in the town centre proper including the Pasty Place, Spud-u-like and Harbingers. If on the other hand you want food that could easily be known as heart attack in a bap then perhaps you should give Yum Yums a try.

The facilities inside the store are good, and it even features a Pharmacy, Cafe as well as products or concessions from multiple brands including Accessorize, Decathlon, Timpson, Greggs and even a Post Office! The selection in terms of groceries was also pretty good, I did find the store a little hard to follow, struggling to find certain products at first. They seemed to stock most of the items you'd expect to find in an ASDA, I still prefer the product ranges available at Tesco and Sainsbury's, who I feel have a better selection of brands, but this store was pretty good for an ASDA. There is a large car park, however, do be careful if approaching as a pedestrian, one of the main crossings is on a sharp corner, which is poorly lit, meaning it is difficult to see if any cars are coming, as it is a blind spot, this would be dangerous in the middle of the day, which almost caused me to get run over, let alone in the dark nights - with winter coming, they need to sort it out as it's a safety hazard. 4*

Quite why they've decided to offer sausage rolls, pies and pasties at one pound when you can usually get one for a bit less, I'm not sure; even when you do pay more than a pound for a pasty in Greggs or Sayers, it's not too much more and it's not so much more that you'd rather not pay it. Especially when their goods are generally pretty tasty and of a higher quality than here. Their selection of savouries and sweets are pretty impressive and rival the other local bakers in the area, but with Greggs and the excellent Greenhalghs just down the way from them, I'd say that Pound Bakery is a place you should go if you literally only have a pound to spend for your dinner. But then again, you can't get a drink. Or some sort of accompaniment, which we all know is imperative to your lunchtime snack.
