I never tire of visiting the Museum of Tolerance because I feel like there's always something new…read moreto reflect on and learn during each visit. I believe everyone should visit this museum at least once in their lifetime. Now more than ever, it's important to look back at history and recognize what can happen when people stay silent in the face of evil or when political language is used to slowly justify discrimination and dehumanization. Admission is reasonably priced at $16 for adults, $12 for students, and $13 for seniors. Parking is free, although it's first come, first served. I've usually been lucky enough to find nearby street parking, but definitely pay attention to "no parking" signs in the surrounding area. My favorite part of the museum is the Holocaust exhibit. No matter how many times I visit, it still gives me chills. The guided experience with the audio narration is incredibly immersive and emotionally heavy in a way that's hard to fully describe. At the beginning of the exhibit, you're given a photo passport card belonging to a real person, and by the end of the tour you learn what ultimately happened to them. It's such a powerful reminder that these were real people living ordinary lives making plans, raising families, working, laughing, hoping. They never imagined the horrors that would eventually unfold around them. The exhibit includes replicas of concentration camp environments and walks visitors through what prisoners may have experienced passing through the gates, being separated from loved ones, and facing the terrifying uncertainty of what came next. One of the most haunting sections for me is the café diorama, where you hear conversations representing different public attitudes during the rise of Nazi Germany: people minimizing the danger, looking away, rationalizing things politically, or waiting too long to leave until escape was no longer possible. It's deeply unsettling precisely because it feels so human and believable. If you ever get the opportunity to listen to a Holocaust survivor speak in person, please take it. It's incredibly important to hear their stories while that generation is still with us. Reading about history or watching interviews online is impactful, but hearing a survivor speak directly in front of you carries a completely different emotional weight. You're suddenly confronted with the reality that this isn't ancient history or just something confined to textbooks...you are sitting in the same room as someone who endured unimaginable evil and lived to tell the story. That kind of experience stays with you long after you leave the museum.

When I arrived, the gates were wide open so that anyone from the street could walk in, no one checked tickets or enforced seating arrangements, and I was assaulted by a strange woman who sat in one of the seats I purchased. She refused to move, she refused to show her ticket, and told me I was "ruining her movie." I looked for security but there was none. I spoke to the host, who rolled his eyes and did nothing. I tried to get back into my seat one last time but she again refused to move. I've requested a refund but heard nothing from the theatre. Save your money and your time.

We showed up 1/2 hour early and there already was a line 30 people deep. Once the gate opened, we moved at a good pace. Getting checked in and welcomed with passed trays of a gazpacho. Buffet table was loaded with salads, cheeses and bread. A side table was serving beer and white/red wines. There were also trays of cute mozzarella & cherry tomatoes roaming around. We enjoyed the opening reception as well as the movie. The short movie " Bowling killers " by Sébastien Petit Trailer shown before the main feature was hilarious.

Barry Fisher, the band's founder, is still very active and in fact just played for the Los Angeles City Council and Mayor last week to kick off Jewish Heritage Month in LA. Great performance! They also do amazing cross-cultural blendings of ethnic music, like Klez-Mex-Ko, which is a term they coined for music they have arranged with Klezmer, Mexican and Korean influences. Highly recommended to check them out for something different.

How many hundreds of times have I driven by the Tarzana Community & Cultural Center? It has been…read moremany years, way back to the time there was a pottery store on the property. I finally had a chance to visit for a Tarzana Music Night last week. What a fun event! Because the weather was being forecasted to be cool with the potential of rain, the event was held indoors. Things were comfortable, but we were in close quarters with the other attendees. The sound was great and the performances were a lot of fun. I was primarily there to see a good friend perform, but I also had the chance to see some other talented musicians. I think each one was a singer songwriter, and I enjoyed each performance. Each one of the people that was working at the venue, which I imagine may have been on a volunteer basis, was friendly and a lot of fun. Normally the music nights are held outdoors, and I can imagine that most of the year, it is a lot of fun being in the open air.

They have a small outdoor stage with string lights hanging beautifully all around, a few picnic tables and fold out chairs for when there's an event to watch. When the chairs aren't there I imagine thats what they use for the outdoor dance floor under the stars, too! A few people brought their dogs on leash. I saw a few people brought in their own food, chilled out and ate while they watched the live band. They do have a very small amount of drinks, chips, and cookies for sale at a stand but thats it so if you don't want junk food def bring what you do want. They do have an indoor bathroom. PARKING - Def uber/LYFT to them. There are only a few spots in the back you can get to from the side street (not from Ventura blvd) and thats it! So do yourself a favor and get a ride. Lyft must know about this place because the driver knew exactly where to meet us in the back when we booked our return. For us it was a calm but fun summer evening hang outside! I don't know what its like without a band playing but hope I get a chance to check that out too.

She was so knowledgeable and helped set the stage for us to slip into a forgotten era and get a glimpse of how imagination met inventiveness with a DIY charm. ~ A LITTLE BACKSTORY FOR YOU ~ It's not pronounced Rubel as Barney from Flintstones. Rather, it's like Target is to Targét when we are trying to be fancy. So that's Rubel as in "Roo-bell." Unlike modern-day construction, Rubel Castle wasn't built overnight. It was made of collected recyclables and construction rubble that spanned many decades and took several friends and volunteers to build it. For Michael, however, the lifetime inspiration was first sparked at the age of 9. His love for canons was where it started and the rest is history you can hear about on the tour. But don't just show up like we did randomly one day. Built in the castle period of wood and tin, every corner captured our interests, from antique cars to the 1890's Seth Thomas Tower Clock with a unique backstory (and only six in existence today). There were old vending machines, tools, trinkets, and machinery that time had long forgotten. Did I mention there was a drawbridge? Yes, and a dungeon too. I was just waiting for a dragon to come swoop down on us next. Walk in the footsteps of famous visitors like Alfred Hitchcock, Dwight Eisenhower, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope. It's a feast for the eyes no matter where you glance. I particularly enjoyed the bottle house that Michael built in 1968 as his "home" as a kid. That independent spirit was quite charming to see. ~ WATERCOLOR NATURESCAPE ~ We were fortunate to have our gracious host lead us on a tour and organize a special art crafting experience outdoors. It was absolutely lovely beneath the trees and between rusted vintage cars from the turn of the century. We each got a small canvas to paint our flowers in watercolor. (This particular experience takes place in the Spring and Fall, weather permitting.) We heard the squirrels rattling in the leaves and birds chirped and sang in the trees above. We discovered that peacocks apparently originated from this property, compliments of Michael Rubel. And did I mention that on the far side of the property, a custom garden was in full bloom? This place is beautifully done, and part of its charm is that it's a full-on hodgepodge of relics, antiques, crystal trinkets, and "wait... what is that doing here?" moments tucked into every nook and cranny. You'll marvel, you'll laugh, you'll squint in confusion--honestly, it's everything you'd want in a castle built with love, imagination, and a dash of madness. And let's talk about the makeshift cemetery. Quirky? YES. Fun? Absolutely. Slightly spooky? Only if your imagination is over-caffeinated. But it fits the vibe perfectly--like the castle whispered, "You know what I'm missing? A tiny cemetery." Someone has said about 300 people...and I could go with that. All I know is that it was a small enough environment that you could almost see nose-hairs, if you get me. I have seen this famous country group perform on several occasions, and this was my favorite. The best part was that they had to re-film the opening to a song...I think it was "What Hurts the Most" (or Sarabeth/Skin), and the intro was played SO INCREDIBLY beautifully....the radio would never play an intro that long, but oh my my how amazingly it was played! I've never seen a concert that up close, since...and sadly, just because of tight finances, I think that was the last time I saw RF in person!

After the disappointment of the White Stripes canceling their World Tour, I had signed up for an…read moreexclusive invite-only show in LA for the Foo Fighters and actually got chosen!!! Spent the day in LA and met at the "secret" pick-up location where we would be shuttled to the set. The show was being filmed for YAHOO and their series of online shows. A lot of waiting in lines - waiting to be shuttled, waiting to be searched, waiting to go to the building, waiting to go into the set, waiting fro the band.... The stage set-up was great. The area fit about 300 people, including a ramp that wrapped the stage (people were to be standing behind the band when they played). It was mostly standing with some risers in the back, with couches and sitting areas. I was about 6 feet from the stage, including a walkway that the camera men would use for filming. Sound was great, for both rocking and acoustic performance. The lighting set up was awesome as well. Overall a great experience. Would DEFINITELY see other shows there. and BTW - the FF put on an awesome show!!!

I had did some research before I stepped into this creative expression of fun collections. This…read moremuseum is definitely an art experience worth visiting with iconic figures and street art that paints Mr. Brainwash's (Thierry Guetta) main mantra for the museum, "Life Is Beautiful" which is dedicated to honoring imagination, joy, creativity and inspiration. It's his own work that is displayed but he also references artists work such as the famous Banksy and other artists. A friend told me that the documentary, Exit through the Gift Shop, is connected to this museum. I have yet to watch but will do so to gain more understanding. Apparently, it was free museum day because there were hosts at the door greeting and letting visitors in. That was nice. It wasn't too busy but a good crowd to where I had to wait for my turn to take photos. It's three levels including the rooftop where more artwork is held and a view overlooking Beverly Hills. They also have a gift shop with unique items for purchase. I bought a cutesy pen with an engraved quote on it. To add, I was instantly moved by the creativity and effort they put into this museum. It brought a lot of inspiration. The art work gave me ideas of how I would want a part of my home to look like. It was a fun visit and would recommend for anyone wanting to dig into their imagination and enjoys art. I am also a sucker for anything that brings out the inner child in me and this place fed it well. Thank you, Mr. Brainwash and staff. Ps. The museum might be closed now.
