After debating between a few whale watching companies, we decided to book with Picos de Aventura. What an awesome choice we made! Since we didn't stay in Ponte Delgada, we had to look for parking. There is a parking garage (underneath) right by the marina and some street parking around.
They open at 8 (regardless that my Expedia doc says arrive 30 mins early). We hung out in front of the building and enjoyed the views of the docks. Once we checked in, we were handed a red card each.
We start off with a brief video explains the rules and regulation about whale watching and which whales and dolphins we are likely to see this time of the year. We also signed a waiver stating no heart conditions or pregnancy. Afterwards, with our life vest and heavy duty rain coat, we board the boat.
The boat looks like an inflatable with motor in the back and we seat on it like how we ride horses. And off we go into the abyss. We first encountered some dolphins. They would get really close to our boat and it was intriguing to see how they interact with the sea. We saw a few sperm whales swimming in pack towards the end of our trip, but since there were other tour boats around, we weren't able to get super close.
The ride in the ocean itself was a wonderful experience. We were lucky that the water was calm and weather was nice. Our tour guide was friendly and informative. You should definitely consider booking with Pico de Aventura for whale watching. They also have plenty of other tours available. read more
