It's like the Central Park of the Azores! Dating back to 1775, this park is so serene and picturesque, and is best known for its thermal baths, which if you're going to, make sure to bring a towel and an old bathing suit you don't care about, because it's going to end up being tinted yellow from the minerals. You can spend an entire day in the park, it's so big. I spent an hour rushing through it and seeing all the pretty flowers, ponds, grottoes, and gardens. They give you a map, so you can be very organized wandering through. After that, I spent about half an hour in the pools. There are changing rooms, bathrooms, and outdoor showers, although it's just to rinse off. Don't plan to wash your hair and body here. It's got a hotel and restaurant attached to it as well, and if you're staying there, you get free entry. This is a must on your trip to the island!

For the reasonable price of 8 euros, you gain access to a large geothermal water tank/pool, jacuzzis of thermal water, gardens, zoomorphic sculptures, restrooms, showers, and changing rooms. This is a beautiful location to spend your day relaxing in the thermal pool and jacuzzis. Don't make the mistake of bringing a light colored bathing suit or towel, you'll be orange when you exit the water. Leave time in your day to explore the gardens. They're absolutely beautiful. Hours of operation 10 AM - 6 PM. Street parking available.

Beautiful garden/park! You can easily lose track of time walking around and enjoying the scenery of the park. Make sure you leave at least 3 hours for this place. 2 hours strolling around the park (going through all the trails), 30 minutes sitting in the jacuzzi hot springs, and 30 minutes for the larger pool of natural hot springs. Very well kept!

Incredible place. The gardens the thermals pools. Leave plenty of time to explore this gem. We had to go two days in a row since we didn't leave enough time first day to enjoy gardens and pools.

Because we were with a tour guide, we got a discount, so we paid the bare minimum entrance fee of €1.50, but once we decided to do the thermal pools, there wasn't even anyone around to take our money for the extra entrance fee. So we got to do it all for dirt cheap! I guess you're supposed to give it to them on your way out, but no one does. So just pay the lower amount, because in the end, it doesn't even matter. The trees, moss, ferns, and flowers are majestic. The first two thermal pools you see are the hotter ones, and the one with the waterfall is the colder one. You can take unique photos in all three, but my favorite was the one with the waterfall. Definitely bring a swimsuit you don't care about, because the water will give it a yellow tint. And there are changing rooms and bathrooms, but nothing else, so bring a towel, flip-flops, and water. This was one of the highlights of our Azores trip - make sure to go!

We also had sweet corn that they boil in the water of the volcanos and it was delicious. It's a pretty big area to walk around with beautiful view all around. Be prepared to walk. The volcanic smell is pretty tough and it's all around but you get used to it. There's a fountain that you can drink the water and they say it's miraculous water. I tried both waters, they are a little rough to swallow with a weird flavor but definitely something to experience. The local reataraunts are also amazing. Def suggest experiencing this area if you are in Azores.

Come here to go on long walks, take beautiful photos atop the lookout point, and see the tranquil lagoon in its fullest. I couldn't take my eyes off of this view and its vivid colors - I promise it'll take your breath away. There are also hikes you can do all around, where you'll venture through fields and dirt roads and narrow ferny paths. Seems like the hike has a little of everything! If you're interested in geothermal cooking, there are restaurants nearby that offer it! How cool to be able to eat meals that were cooked in volcano holes. It takes eight hours to cook a pot, and if you time it correctly, you can go to this lake/geothermal area around noon to watch the restaurant staff pull their pots out of the buried holes in the ground. The whole area has boiling water and sulfur venting from the earth next to a beautiful lake, which makes for an iconic picture. You can then follow the food to the restaurant and be served this amazing dish. Put Furnas on your to-do list! Can't miss it when you're there!

Lagoa das Furnas was one of my two favorite places to visit on Sao Miguel, a huge, calm, gorgeous…read morelake, home to flocks of placid ducks and geese, with excellent hiking trails up the mountains off the main path around the lake. The great draw for me was the quiet. It was possible to find near-total solitude early in the day, to breathe with trees, to listen to bird calls, free from the roar of tour bus engines. There is a small entrance fee -- very nominal IIRC, something like 50 cents for adults and older children, free for very young children. This Lagoa is one of the three larger, better known crater lakes on the island. It's still slightly off the beaten track for international tourists, but is perennially popular with local vacationers, many of whom spend an entire day making cozidas, grilling, picnicking and strolling around it. The hiking trails are well maintained and there's the intoxicatingly sweet smell of Kahili ginger flowers everywhere (those clusters of yellow flowers you see and smell all over the island). The paths the branch off from the main lake trail are cool and dark well into the middle of the day, offering respite from the heat of the sun. There's a lot to explore on these side trails: abandoned buildings, carved wooden statues, an old church, even a waterfall we heard of (but didn't see). The main, mostly flat trail is suitable for even young children, while many of the side trails branching into the mountains can be navigated carefully with an active, energetic three-year old, with some help on the larger steps (and a good carrier for when the baby steam runs out). Our six-year old sprang up them like a mountain goat. Right by the parking lot at the northern tip of the lake, there are fumarolas, where it's a big deal for families and restaurants to cook all-day cozidas (stews) in the hot, bubbling, sulfur yellow mud. There are also restrooms (home to a good number of tiny, slender, beautiful cats), a lovely picnic area set among pine trees, a few vendors selling snacks, fresh juice, and souvenirs. We didn't make it all the way around, but we hear the entire circumference of the lake takes about two hours to walk, with about 1/3 of the way along EN1-1A, a busy main road.
