Called up last week and booked myself in for a cheeky wee appt on the Sat. I was quite excited as the place looks funky and this was a chance to see for myself if Alice really does rock. I decided to drive in but regretted the decision when I found out that most of the parking round about was residential permits only so I thought best to grab a space on Gibson Street. Managed to finally get one, uber busy and if I've been before it's normally in the evening so no probs at all. I also didn't realise it was a 3 hour restriction with no return. Eep! I just hoped I could get all I wanted within the 3 hours, I know it normally takes along time for me. Went in about 10-15 minutes early and I didn't need to wait long when I was suitably gowned up and sitting waiting in front of the mirror for my colour technician Joanne. The place was absolutely heaving, my wee wait gave me time to take it all in. It's got 3 floors, ground, a mezzaine level and and a lower ground which I presume to be the staff area. There was quite a few stations some on the mezzaine. The place had a funky design not your typical hairdresser type and definitely not a snobby 'West End' joint either so felt quite chilled. Joanne came over and I explained I like my colours whacky so knew I would need bleached. I explained I normally have black with really a really bright colour all underneath and one big panel at the front. I had been a really bright red all over for a while which had faded a lot so I wanted brightened and spruced up. I was quite keen to move away from the red and have a really vibrant pink/purple colour, I had been thinking berries for quite sometime now. Joanne brought over a colour chart and I spotted a pink/purple straight away that I liked. Joanne got straight in and started bleaching but she put in more panels than my usual one at the front, so I thought ach why not. She bleached the underneath, not as much as I usually have but I thought it might work as I have many layers already in my hair, so you'll be able to see it. Went through the stingy process. Ouch! No pain no gain! Then Joanne suggestion of having the full colour through my hair appealed so I had Carly wash my hair and add the pink/purple through my hair. It looked like it was going to really uber bright. I sat chilling while I developed, I had been looked after with cups of tea and magazines, I also enjoyed listening in to the banter. Just couldn't believe how busy they were, shuffling people around to make sure everybody was attended to. After a while Carly came back over and rinsed me off and gave me a quick head massage which was appreciated as my head was a wee bit nippy from the product. Joanne popped over, while I was getting my hair washed, to see how the coloured look and seemed pleased. I explained I didn't want a cut as I only had it cut last month and I'm trying to grow it. I was really looking forward to seeing the results. My face was quite pink from the dye which I wasn't too bothered about as I know it will eventually come off, Carly did her best to remove it for me. Carly did the drying and straightning for me and just in time for me to get my car. I set my alarm just over 5 mins before I needed to get it. Once dried I did think it looked a lot darker than I thought and when Carly was showing me the back there was a bit of black in it too. I couldn't really see my bright panels as I'd hoped. I hadn't realised that Joanne had been putting black in it and one of the bleached panels is hidden underneath my side shed. I quite like to see it especially when I put my hair in my usual style. I think she maybe misunderstood me when I explained how I normally have it, hence putting black in it. I went to pay and I had went out the way to get a Sumo card, that was quite an ordeal to get. It had said online that I could get 40% off colour. I knew it would be quite expensive to get my hair done and saw online that AR took the Sumo card. When I produced it though they said they didn't. I wouldn't have went to all the hassle of getting it if I knew they didn't except it. They did apologise but they did make up it up to me which I'm very grateful. When I got home and went out that night people were commenting on it but saying how very dark I'd went but that's not what I had wanted. It is a lot lot darker than I'd normally have it. People hadn't even realised I had it bleached underneath or that I had panels through the top. I'm a bit disappointed but I can't fault them on the good job they did do but maybe with it being really busy my idea got a bit lost. I think if I did go back I would go back on a quieter day.

With a funky exterior that must have looked to the locals like the work of magical trolls, the devil or Paul Daniels and a nice bright funky (in a very urban type way..?) interior, this is a cool we joint in context. With reasonable pricing, trendy staff and a good range of reputable products on offer, Urban Funk is a one off in the area. Will it be enough to tempt in the funkier folk in the area? OR will they prefer to make the quick jaunt into town? we shall see. If you too suffer from or think you may be getting Urban Funk then i recommend getting your ass into the country....dont worry its not fatal.

Urban Funk stands out from the surrounding dull doorways on the street, with its bold black and orange painted entrance, so I was intrigued enough to go inside. My first impressions were good, as the guy that worked there was nicely styled with good hair, which confirmed the cool image of the place and portrayed the results of their expertise. The guy that worked there was friendly and chatty when I asked for a price list, informing me that it was only £10 for a cut and shampoo, which impressed me, compared with the big name salons in town. This place strikes a nice balance between stuffy old out of date barbers and high priced hair salons, providing something for the modern man who takes care of his mullet as well as his wallet.

I walked all around the Partick area, and decided to try Tina Reilly for a stand by cut. The receptionist said there was availability and to take a seat! Get in!!! The salon itself is small, with a total of about 5 chairs. It has an upmarket look with a locals feel to it. Classy blacks and silvers through out, it's a nice place. I was only sitting for about 5 minutes before the receptionist took me back to get my hair washed. I was a bit mortified at the thought of not having a wee consult with the stylist before getting my hair cut. For those of you who have seen my hair, there's a lot there, and who ever is going to cut it needs to see what he/she's in for. Oh well, to the washing! Nothing fancy to speak of, but the way she dried my hair was a bit on the comical side. i felt like I was a dog and she was drying my long shaggy fur. I mean, I know i have really thick hair, but c'mon! Lighten up on the scrubbing! She sat me down at a chair and along came Emma. Oh Emma. I'm always weary of new stylists, but I've definitely found a diamond in the rough here. Very unassuming, she may even be a new stylist (I failed to ask), but once she combed out my hair, she asked what it was I was looking for. My typical response is "I'm growing my hair out, but it's at that blah phase- can you layer it?" Soon there after, i usually regret uttering the words "layer" because I usually walk out of a salon with "shelf" hair. What is "shelf" hair you might be wondering? It's when a stylist layers my hair, all one layer and it's like my hair has a shelf in it. It's hideous and i want to cry until it's grown out. I kid..... Anyway, Emma went at my hair like a baker to a cake, cutting and trimming and layering with ease. Wisps of wet hair fell to my lap, 2 inches at a time. I held my breath thinking that i might leave yet another salon mourning the loss of my hair, but I just let her go. If there's one thing I've learned in my many years of hair cuts, HAIR GROWS BACK. She finished and said she was going to dry it to see if it needed more layering. That's when my smile grew! She is a master hair cutter, dryer and straightener in my eyes!! My hair was perfect. Like the women on the streets who's hair i envy...mine now looks like that! Now, if i can recreate the way I look now tomorrow, once I've washed my hair again. Emma is a blessing, and you should recommend her if ever you are looking for a great hair cut! I will definitely be back!

There is one exception to this rule and her name is Jenni: as per usual, this absolutely fabulous wonder of a woman has been able to transform my lackluster, mess of a kraken, into a beautiful mermaid's net ready to entangle the nearest innocent bystander. (The innocents taste better). Jenni has moved to Danielle Carr recently and although the salon is definitely smaller than Medusa, the atmosphere is also a lot more ... amiable. I found Medusa a little forced at times with the techno music and the general loudness, but this is more a place to relax, though I'm afraid when I came here the general loudness level of the salon was upped a little. The people here are friendly and clearly work well together in a team, and as for Jenni? Magic, pure magic, as per usual. The great thing about a truly great hairdresser is that you never have to tell her exactly what you want, you just flop your hands about a bit, say some general words in a certain direction and she takes over and just knows. Now, you might say, that's because you've been going to her for two years now. Yes, that's part of it, and you should be too, but most of it is her intuition. Jenni is good at consultation and damned if she isn't even better at colouring and cutting. I've seen her transform a mess of a Hungarian fro (we won't name names) into an ice-cool hair do in under twenty minutes. Whot. WHOT. Yes, truly. I didn't think it was possible but that cut is so fresh that the man in question now has a whole new attitude to match it. My hair, you ask? Fabulous, as always. Golden and glowing down my back in undulating waves and healthy to boot. Hairdressers, truly great ones, are really rare, and most of them get a little scissor happy when they think they can get away with it. Not Jenni, or if she does get scissor happy, you won't notice, 'cause it will simply look exactly as it ought to. Go forth, go here, and know that this is an investment in never having to worry about how to do your hair again. Ever.

The total came to around £20 - that's not too bad for a hair chop these days. The bloke that cut my hair was good fun and full of banter. The assistant was also pleasant. For once, conversation wasn't a struggle! Second visit was to the beautician who rents a room in the back of the salon. Cannot recommend her highly enough. I went for various waxing efforts and she was really friendly and good fun to chat to. The prices were excellent - I had a half leg wax, bikini wax and a free eyebrow shape for the paltry sum of £20. I will definitely be back. One tip is that she's cash only (unlike the hairdressers) so make a visit to the cashline before an appointment!
