Just look up the address of where to park (as it's in the back on a different street) and you're good to go. The tour starts off with an informative movie. The house stayed with Marshall's family until it became a public historical site, so all the rooms were just as he left them. The tour guide had a lot of good stories about the private life of Marshall, which was really interesting to hear about. I'm glad the house was preserved, despite it being in rough shape when the last family member sold it. It's a gem of a site. There is a very small gift shop section. The tours are a bit over an hour and totally worth it to visit.

Military Museum [Frederick MD]…read more We had some time on our last day in MD before heading to the airport... from Linthicum Heights we drove some 50 miles to Frederick. We found a spot on a metered street parking in front of the museum. Admission is $9.50/adult. The museum is dedicated to telling the medical story of the Civil War. There are a lot to see... and learn. The exhibits were great and educational. We learned how the creation of Civil War medicine impacted the present day. Each gallery offered different exhibits following through the footsteps of the soldiers and surgeons and the harsh conditions and personal sacrifices they went through. I can't even imagine how they evacuate the wounded... an "ambulance" then was a wagon pulled by two horses and carted off to a medical facility. Or how about how they did amputations, amputations were the most common surgical operation during the conflict with more than 60,000 being performed. The wounded soldiers suffered different mortality rates depending on where the amputation took place on the body. There are two floors of exhibits. Stairs and an elevator are accessible to the top floor. There are bathrooms on both levels. I am not in the medical field and found the museum very interesting and educational. The Visitor Center is very nice with a electronic interpretive displays, as well as battlefield artifacts. There is a self-guided 4 mile (6 km) automobile tour of the battlefield and three walking loop trails. It was raining the day we visited, which curtailed exploring the Battlefield and its historical buildings. But I thoroughly enjoyed the the view of the Battlefield -- a rolling grassy field with dense forest around it -- and imagined what the battle may have looked like that day.

Grist Mill, used as a Union field hospital, is worth a visit as well as Edgewood, a beautiful old home behind it. The Thomas House where civilians hid during the battle is worth a stop too. 3) Trails: There are several that offer beautiful views of the river. I was driving down the interstate and all of a sudden I see this massive structure. I knew it was…read morehistoric. I flew on by realizing it would be painful trying to get there when I was on the same side as it was on my way to Shenandoah. On my way back, I managed to figure out what this place was. It was an old 5 story stacked stone structure built in 1742 that had survived several wars and milled food through all of them. in 1998, it was victimized by arson. The roof is gone, and the building has remanence from the fire. Currently, the mill is blocked off from being accessed. According to their website, they are making updates to the road. I accessed it by the railroad that runs behind the building, but as mentioned, the fence does prevent from access. It was really neat to see and I really wish it wasn't blocked off so I could get closer. It's definitely worth a stop if you're in Broad Run and into history.

Excellent local educational experience regarding revolutionary maritime history…read more We reserved time for our homeschool group (grades PreK to 5th) to tour a replica of the "Providence" one of the first ships that John Paul Jones commanded during the American Revolution. The coordination via email was very responsive and amenable. Will Downing is the education director and was able to provide us with student pricing for 12 students and 6 adults, letting 2 adults attend for free. It was a dockside learning experience where we split up in two groups to learn about navigation and life below decks. After both groups swapped we then came together on the main deck to learn about mechanical advantage and knot tying. Finally everyone got a chance to take a look at the "Captain's Quarters". It was about a 2 hour event and everyone had a wonderful time learning about the different maritime subjects and had plenty of time to ask questions. We hope to go back in the spring with our small group and experience some of the sailing activities, hoisting sails, steering and learning how to sail via seaman's eye! Reserve a small group (25 or less people) experience with your students and you will not be disappointed.

I love learning about history in Alexandria and Manumission provides little-known African-American history in historic Old Town. City of Alexandria Councilman John Chapman owns the tour company so taking the tour is a great way to interact with a local leader as well as support a locally owned business. He takes great care in providing accurate information and sharing the history in a respectful way. The walking pace is slow and steady with stops along the way - small groups are intentional so that we can hear as he speaks (uses a microphone speaker) as well as engage with questions. I liked that the tour is mindful of walking throughout Old Town and the guide is mindful as we are crossing streets and pointing out areas for sitting for those who may need to rest during the tour. I learned so much on the tours and I'm looking forward to booking another tour to learn even more. It is truly a unique experience in Alexandria.

There are so many stories left untold in our history books and our guide introduced us to early luminaries in the Black community in Alexandria, like doctors, civil rights attorneys, property developers and organizers of churches and social clubs. We even visited a cemetery from the 1800s where freedmen were buried after the war. Standing there, I had such a powerful feeling. These were REAL people, not just faceless characters from a book. Know before you go: This is a small, locally owned and operated business. Don't expect 24/7 operators to take your call. If you are from out of town, it gets hot here in the summer! Our guide had water bottles for us and the bus was air conditioned (not on arctic blast but it was nice). Do expect a caring and personal experience. You'll be glad you went!
