Crispy pork cheek - January 2016
    Emily B.

Jess D, Natalie W, Oonagh C and I went here for a catch up and to take advantage of their 50% off January deal. I hadn't actually been before and was pleasantly surprised at how spacious it was inside. There are also approximately eighteen thousand staircases, just a heads up. Staff were really helpful and friendly from the start. After a half pint of nice beer, Jess and I were joined by Natalie and made our way to the table. When taking our drinks order the waitress convinced Jess and I to order a carafe of wine rather than separate glasses to save money. It was nice to see that kind of customer service rather than upselling, especially when we were dining on a discount. We were a bit disappointed that the menu wasn't the same as on the website, although looking at it a second time I noticed the online menu is a sample. I assume this means they change the menu often which is a good thing I guess. 50% off all food is basically a challenge, and one we happily accepted. Between us we ordered salt cod fishcakes, crispy pork cheek, and three pizzas which were: - Peppered beef, Lancashire blue, and gherkin - Air dried ham, red onion and goats cheese (with the addition of rocket) - Pancetta, red peppers and black olives (and probably something else? This was Natalie's own creation) I didn't try the fishcakes but Nat and Jess made approving noises. The crispy pork cheek was not as I expected but then I couldn't really tell you what I did expect. It was like pulled pork, compressed into a cylinder. The piccalilli with it stopped it from being too heavy and it was really tasty, though I wouldn't rush to order it again. The pizzas looked and tasted really good. I tried a bit of all three but enjoyed my choice - beef, blue cheese and gherkin - the most. Not too heavy on the blue cheese so not overpowering, and the gherkins really helped to cut through the richness. The crusts were especially delicious, and good for dipping. The other two pizzas were good. I'm not the biggest goat's cheese fan but the flavour was mild and pleasant, and went well with the other toppings. Natalie's pizza was very nice flavour wise but it seemed as though all the ingredients were just dumped on in a heap rather than arranged around the base which resulted in it being quite stodgy. It's odd that this was the case only with that one and neither of the menu choices? The staff had no problem when Oonagh C joined us and her pizza arrived in no time at all, thanks to their huge pizza oven. To finish, we shared a dark chocolate delice and a deconstructed tiramisu. The delice was so so so rich that it's a great option for sharing but I personally would have been defeated by it myself. The tiramisu was delicious although as Jess pointed out, not sure why it couldn't have been constructed? With the 50% off deal this was astounding value, and even without it would have been very reasonable for what we ordered. I'll definitely be back to Tariff & Dale.

My boozy Saturday out in the NQ with friends brought me to Tariff and Dale. It's an excellent establishment with a bar on street level and a restaurant below. I spent most of my afternoon playing pool - which is free to play with a £10 deposit for cues and balls. I went easy on Michael B. and let him win a few games ;) I'll be back to T&D very soon to try their food, as I've heard pretty good things!

Came here for the first time last night for good and a drink with an old friend who has just moved back to Manchester after 4 years. I chose tariff and dale to try show him how cool and improved the northern quarter has become, after hearing good reviews. I was slightly disappointed because for some reason I assumed from its exterior that it would be a bit classier and smarter than its neighbouring Whiskey Jar and El Capo, although it was just as dark and moody as those two, and slightly laid back and casual. From looking at the menu online and hearing opinions, I didn't expect this. Never the less, it's still a nice place, just very dimly lit and typical shabby chic NQ. Cocktails were good, as was the food- I had the hake and potatoes and my friend had the steak, and both meals were lovely. We dined downstairs and although I felt like I was in a cave, it was generally a decent dining area. Staff quite slow and it took ages to get the bill to say it wasn't that busy. But we took advantage of the 50% off for January, which made the bill mega cheap! Would be a nice bar to start off in for afternoon drinking or more of a daytime session type place in my option Good location though!

On the edge of the Northern Quarter, this little beaut sits on it's corner. Tariff and Dale is a a low-lit laid back spot perfect for those looking for an intimate evening in the week or I aspect a lively hang out spot at the weekend. Tonight, my colleagues and I enjoyed a night cap here and enjoyable it was. The comfortable sofas are more than inviting and the atmosphere was the definition of chilled. I chose a glass of rose (standard) and Jonny and Dan grabbed an IPA - all went down a treat. Within T&D there's also a restaurant, pool table and large bar area making this the ultimate venue experience (I'm a BIG fan of any venue with a pool table). T&D also seems to really care about it's customers and their image - this is shown by their marketing of unique in-house events throughout the venue.

TL;DR - Cool bar, nice downstairs seating, good pizzas. Dropped by here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The upstairs is a bit spartan, but we found a table and soaked up the atmosphere - they've done a really nice job of putting a modern bar in an old unit and retaining some of its industrial features (note the table in the old service lift!). We ordered nothing too fancy - a couple of pizzas and some tea to drink. Our drinks came quickly and the waitress apologised profusely when she spotted a bit of torn up napkin near our table! When the pizzas came they were clearly freshly made (if you're seated downstairs you can see into the kitchen). Bases were light and crisp, toppings were flavourful - all good stuff and very reasonably priced. The only downside was that we thought the bar was a bit cold and draughty; if you're sensitive to temperature then head downstairs.

Tariff & Dale has settled in to its surroundings and managed to continue drawing the crowds; unlike its neighbours, there's no discernible 'theme' but rather just a focus on a good atmosphere and service. The darker decor makes a nice change from the Scandi-style design of the likes of Common and Federation, giving it almost a traditional pub feel. I'm a big fan of the large cases used to store drinks when they're not needed in the fridges - a quick and transparent way to do a stock take. Upon arrival there's an arrow pointing downstairs for the restaurant but, after an excellent roast earlier in the day, we stayed within the upstairs bar area. We visited on a Sunday (hence the roast...) so it was easy to get a table, but there was a steady stream of people coming in for a few drinks or to make good use of the pool table. The drinks menu is split nicely between classic / twisted / special types of cocktails so you can vary between traditional and something a bit different. I opted for a Tommy's Margarita, which had the usual sweet and sour mix, but with a nice smoky back-note. The bartenders were happy to switch gin for vodka in my friend's cocktail also, and they advertise a certain amount of flexibility in the menu also; basically if you want something and it's not listed, just ask! A happy few hours spent on a wet Sunday afternoon.

Tariff and Dale would not look out of place in New York, London or any other major city in the world. This is a space with that cool, forward thinking vibe really making the most of its location buzzing with Manchester creatives. The bar is low lit with some seriously varied and well selected music playing throughout, it was at that hard to achieve perfect volume which meant that we could talk over it while it was still loud enough to be in focus and enjoyed! The really cleaver thing here is that the bar was never that busy during our visit but due to the lighting and vibe this industrial space never dealt cold or empty. I see that as a real achievement. A good selection of my new favourite drink (craft beers) made this a great experience and somewhere I would love to bring friends.

Air dried ham, red onion and goat's cheese pizza (with extra rocket!)

It was a girls' night out to make the most of the 50% off deal at Tariff and Dale. I hadn't been here yet but had been wanting to try it since I have first seen the good look exterior and cozy fit out. We had a drink upstairs at the bar before heading down one of the many, many stair cases to the underground restaurant. The restaurant is much smaller than I expected but looks great and is very comfortable. I'm not sure how noisy it would be when it is full of people - it was quiet on this Monday night as not many people were out dining after the New Year. The staff were really friendly and the service fantastic. We were quickly seated, served and our food arrived in excellent time. And it was seriously tasty - we had two starters which were nicely presented on the plates and decent portions. Then all three of us ordered sourdough pizzas. I am very, very picky about pizza bases as it seems England hasn't quite worked out how to make a decent base yet. These were far better than others I have sampled in the UK so far but the bottom was slight burnt and there seemed to be a fear of getting the toppings too close to the edge. Saying that, my air-dried ham, goats cheese, red onion and rocket (added by me) toppings were delicious and nicely generous. It was a really tasty pizza and I'd definitely go back for another one. We ordered two desserts to share - a deconstructed tiramisu and the chocolate delice. The chocolate was rich, creamy and really really good and I am picky when it comes to chocolate desserts. The tiramisu was surprisingly boozy (yay!) but why it had to be deconstructed, I'm not sure. Tasted great though. Over all a really great dining experience and I will definitely go back again and pay full price.

Loved this new addition to the Tarrif Street end of the NQ. Its a great bar with a few booths and high tables to relax and to enjoy the great atmosphere of this narrow cool bar. I had a 4 beer of the draft and it was reasonably priced at £4 a pint. The music was cool as was the customers and the bar staff. Cant wait to go back!

On Friday night we normally head out from work into the Northern Quarter to have a drink, dance and let our hair down. This week following a friends recommendation we headed to Tarrif and Dale, the new bar on Tarrif St. I was abit dubious at first as I thought it was more restaurant than Friday night bar but was pleasantly suprised. The bar has afew booths where you can sit with groups of friends, the music was great with a DJ and area to dance, and the gin and tonics were served Spanish style in glass goblets which makes gin taste amazing! The bar was busy but not mega packed and we really enjoyed our night there! Would definitely recommend!

The service was OK, the food offerings just not enticing at all (we ended up with Caesar salads as the main, and stopped to buy some food at a Sainsbury's local and take it back to our hotel room. I had a margarita that tasted good but the glass was 80% filled with the biggest block of ice that I have ever seen - for £14.50!!!! Advice - stick with beer or wine and don't even consider cocktails!!! The place is still attractive but the fact that it was virtually empty on a Friday evening at 7-8pm is maybe explained by all the foregoing??

We also got Sticky toffee pudding for dessert. So yummy! Definitely give it a shot.

Another amazing thing about this place is most non-students won't venture here because it's nicely tucked away, hidden behind the hullabaloo of wilmslow road. Others will probably be put off by its awkward location at the end of a road full of terraced student houses. But if you can look past the studenty atmosphere you'll realise that actually a lot of the punters are either older students or local young professionals. But now I know why, even though it's not hidden, it's listed as being on Lever St but in reality it set back from the road slightly down Faraday St. So it's not immediately visible from Lever St unless you're looking for it; which is really my only reason for not giving it 5*. Pie and Ale doesn't bound head long towards the current fashion of ultra trendy scrounged and up-cycled interiors that so many bars are doing, it's interior is very clean and simple but also warm and inviting and won't age or go out of fashion as quickly as some of the other bars in the NQ. It's also got several different space so you can choose to sit in the open seating area with the large glass windows, next to the bar at high benches or walk around the corner and up the stairs for a more cosy intimate set of booths above the bar; this means the location can suit a lot of different situations. They have a good selection of ales for the likes of myself, but have a good range of bottle beers and your general assortment of keg beers, wines etc. The pies are on the pricey side (£9.95-£11.95) especially compared with the likes of Pie Minister (£7.95 for the Mothership) only a few blocks away, but they are big and hearty as you'd hope and with the availability of cask beer (Pie Minister only has bottles) improves the experience for me. In my opinion it's always nicer having a fresh well kept pint than having bottled beer. I had the Moufflon and Minted Chocolate which was spot on as far as I'm concerned the chocolate and stout sauce went fantastically with the well cooked steak. Overall I really enjoyed the relaxed feel of Pie and Ale and will be most likely to return now I know where it is.

I really thought the selection was excellent (and well priced - a flight of 3 thirds was £3.40 of cask ale) and their bottles are a good mix of what America and Europe has to offer! This place is going to be amazing for the world cup with a big screen up in the main bar showing all the matches (they were actually showing the Champions league final on Sat night, adding to the ambience) - and the music was just the icing on the cake - what a fantastic selection of reggae, dub and hiphop for the 3 hours I was in. Really looking forward to going back and having some great beer with a phat ass pie soon! *extra note should go to all the waiting staff - amazing friendliness and table service all night - nice job guys!*

When we checked in and were asked if there were any allergies we made jokes about my husband's allergy to cinnamon - that we would not need to worry about out it before desert. We ordered a few items from the menu - which is a very delicious mix of classics with some twists (tempura fried fish and chips for example). Order was taken and a couple minutes later the manager came and said "I am sorry - but the sauce to the fish contains a bit of cinnamon" wow! We change the order of course and the manager came back to the table asking if we would be worried about cross termination. We have been not and everything went well after that. Great service. The food itself plays with the alchemist theme for example the chorizo meatballs come with a syringe to inject your own amount of cheese (what you think? Yes of course o injected the whole Syringe into the little delicious meatball duhh). The menu consist of a lot of small items which makes me so happy since I can have so many bites of different things and at the alchemist they are all worth it! And of course classics like burger, salads and sandwiches alongside their mains. The menu is not too big but literally has something for everyone. You have to try the crispy pork skins! After we had been told that the crispy fish contains cinnamon my husband learned they offer their "chicken in a basket" as a vegetarian version as well and that is what he got. Damn that is so good: A bed of chips (fries for our American friends) are surrounded by one of the best coleslaw I had in a long time (almost as good as Guy Fieri's if not even better) then slightly pan seared onions and peppers layer on top of the fries. Ready to be mixed in. Then of course a generous amount of chicken or in this case plant based chicken smothered in a sweet chili sauce. Not to forgot to mention that it came with an extra little bowl of dipping sauce. Delicious! We also had a mocktail which name I might not be allowed to recite here let's named it "virgin adult film star" what a perfect combination of fruit, creme and sweetness.
