Arabbers are street vendors who sell fruits and vegetables from colorful, horse-drawn carts. Arabbing began in the early 19th century in cities along the East Coast, and many African-American men entered the trade following the Civil War. The Arabber Preservation Society was formed in 1994 to renovate and promote the preservation of Arabber stables. 1102 Fremont Avenue has been an Arabber yard for ten years and is one of the last remaining active stables in Baltimore. It is unfortunate that today there are fewer and fewer Arabbers in Baltimore - too much competition from the brick and mortar grocery stores.

The Society was founded in March 1932 and is the oldest exclusively model railroad club in the United States. They maintain 2,500 square feet of model railroad displays of steam and diesel freight and passenger trains and trolleys, plus so much more. It was fun to see all the parts of the display - it really gives you a glimpse into the history of railroading. It is not easy to find, as the doorway is tucked into the left front center of the building and the society is located on the third floor with no elevator. The display is normally open on the second Sunday of each month, except May.

The 2nd half of our trip consisted of viewing snakes and various animals within the indoor space. The bathroom facilities were spacious and family friendly. I hadn't heard of the Clifton House until I saw it on the website for Doors Open Baltimore 2024 (if…read moreyou don't know what Doors Open is, google it!). I'm so glad that my friend and I made a point it to visit it last weekend as a part of Doors Open. What a unique and special organization. Recognize the name Lucille Clifton? She was a poet who served as the Poet Laureate of Maryland from 1979 to 1985 and a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Her husband Fred Clifton was a professor of philosophy and sculpture. The Cliftons had six children and lived in this home that is now The Clifton House for several years until the house was foreclosed on in 1980. In 2019, one of the Cliftons' daughters bought the home, and The Clifton House is now living a new life with a new purpose! The house is now a home to a nonprofit organization dedicated to continuing the legacy of poetry, art, activism, and community of the Cliftons. The organization is new and still growing and expanding. But it will eventually allow for artists in residence to reside in the home and write or create art where the Cliftons wrote and created their art. For now, it is housing and sponsoring events, workshops, classes, screenings, and more. Our visit on Doors Open included a great tour and explanation of where the Clifton House is and where it intends to go. I for one am excited to follow it and see what it offers to its community and the artistic community in our city. It's come a long way since being purchased by the Cliftons' daughter just before the pandemic, and I'm thrilled to be on their email list so I can visit again for an event again soon!

My wife, through her job, is acquainted with a local businessman who is an officer at the Post who mentioned the breakfast to her. I was intrigued and decided to give things a try. For $8 you can get your fill of scrambled eggs, hotcakes, sausage, bacon, diced potatoes and even, once in a while, biscuits and sausage gravy and even scrapple. It ain't fancy but it's good. Post members offer great hospitality and fellow customers are nice as well. Give it a try and support the American Legion at the same time.

It is located on the third floor of the King Cork Seal building. There is ample parking around back. The entrance is on N Haven, you will find it in the far right upper corner of the parking lot. Take the elevator (or stairs) to the third floor and prepare to be blown away!
