My husband has family in the area, and they have been talking about this brewery for years. We finally had a chance to stop by on a recent family trip to visit them. I started with a sampler, which had seven (if I'm remembering correctly) beers from a range of styles, and I really enjoyed all of them. I also tried a few others, including the lovely barrel aged Raise a Ruckus, which I now consider one of my favorites! We also had their pizza, which is a nice food option that is made right there and tasted great. In addition to great beer, we were treated to one of the best atmospheres I've visited for a craft brewery. I love that it's in an old barn and it has been restored beautifully. It's very clean and inviting. When the weather cooperates, the giant porch outside is nice as well. It's in the middle of nowhere, but I think it's worth a day trip if you are nearby. The drive through the Ozarks is beautiful! If we're ever visiting the area again, we will definitely plan for another stop here! read more

Being from Kansas City, this isn't really on our way anywhere, but because it's hubby's favorite beer, we went out of our way to pay them a visit. This is a wonderful place! The staff is so friendly and engaging. Lisa took excellent care of everyone. They've turned the original barn at the farm into a great venue/tasting room with an adjoining deck. The road to get here is a bit of an adventure, but it's worth the drive. It's an old, gravel road through beautiful farmland. When we arrived here I was told once again, as a non-beer drinker, that I just hadn't tried the right beer yet. We are estimating that I've probably heard that at least 50+ times in our travels. For the first time, I was given samples to try that I actually enjoyed!!! I credit Piney River for giving me the opportunity to purchase a beer to keep at home for those "I just need a beer option" days! I had the Lizzie Twister with a shot of fruit syrup. Raspberry and blackberry were my favorites, but since I was doing so well with my tastings, I decided to try the Lizzie Twister straight and found I enjoyed that as well. They will make a $10 pizza for you that is pretty good and a nice option when you are way out here and needing a little something to go with the beer. I visited the brewery for the 8th anniversary. It was my first time there. The brewery is in a barn out in the middle of nowhere but it was easy to find with the GPS. All of the staff was extremely nice and the beer is really good. They had a couple of food trucks on site that served some really good food. I believe they only serve pizza on normal days. I got the feeling that this brewery is well known by locals just by the interaction I saw from customers and the staff. I'm not from the area, I live here because of military service and live beer so this place was on my list of places to visit and I'm glad I came out. Bring snacks on your visit and enjoy the beer. Great Brewery, great location even better service.. I had the Russian Imperial Stouts, the black Walnut and the collaboration IPA. Since I had only a limited time there, I took some home. Twelve cans do fit in a suitcase and can be checked in.. The Black Walnut is very clean and has a crisp flavor.. the Russian Imperial is my favorite. We drove out to the brewery recently while doing a little Missouri day trip. This brewery is out there in the country but very easy to find. There is plenty of parking and lots of indoor and outdoor seating. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The beer selection is stellar. They have some amazing beer and if you've never had their products, you should definitely get a flight and try them all. On our stop I only had one beer and it was the Big Piney River IPA. Delicious. Overall, great place to visit if you like craft beer and a little adventure. Highly recommend! read more

My girlfriend and I had a great experience here yesterday. It was a nice on a Sunday afternoon. They had live music playing outside on the deck and football playing on the TV. There is a long list of beers to try. They have seven specific beers to try for their flight which was interesting that you didn't get to pick your own. I was a little disappointed with that however it was still nice to have seven beers to taste. I also had a pint of the Octoberfest which was really yummy. I definitely would plan on going back. This brewery is very hidden back in some farm. The barn is super cute and well decorated. I highly recommend trying this brewery out! read more

This place is really beautiful! It's very charming and situated on a large plot of land. You can sit outside and watch the cows or go inside under the Edison lights with a "barn" feel. They have all their Piney River beers on tap, including some I haven't see in stores. Of course it tastes so much better as draft rather than in a can which is a huge plus of coming. Tours are every couple of hours depending on the crowd. We enjoyed live music by Hunter Hathcoat which was really great! We ordered their pizza that was average but great to have something to eat while you wash down some beers. They also have items for sale like recycled "beerings" (earrings made from recycled cans), hydro flask growlers and Piney River beanies.We will make the drive again, no doubt! read more

My first time here was for a wedding reception. It's quite the drive from Springfield, but not a difficult one if you can follow directions (and aren't afraid of a dirty car when you get home!). Piney River is definitely worth it. It was a little chilly when we were there, but it was also a Sunday afternoon...if I had to guess, I would say that they opened especially for the happy couple. On a normal day I am sure the temperature is fine. It's absolutely beautiful inside--it's an old barn that has been finished with a mildly rustic look... There is a lot of wood (obviously), and bathrooms are done with a galvanized bucket for a sink and raw hardware. It's a very comfortable atmosphere. They do not serve food, but it's cool if you bring food in. The reception had food catered in, and there was plenty of room for a buffet table and desserts. They also have a propane grill that is available if you want to grill out on their huge deck. Other reviews mentioned a fire pit, so obviously Piney River is cool with you spending a healthy amount of time there. Piney River's claim to fame is their beer...if you think it's good out of a can, go try it fresh. There is something to be said about having a beer poured from the place it's made. They are happy to tell you all about the brews and let you sample anything you haven't had...even if you come in with the "What's your BEST beer?" question that exposes your inexperience with craft beer. :) Personally, I am in love with the McKinney Eddy. It smells sweet and smooth, and tastes even better. I am also a fan of their root beer, and I am not a soda drinker. To top it all off, Brian and Jolene are some of the nicest people you'll meet. Despite the gold medals and awards hanging on the wall, they are personable and friendly. It's nice to visit a place where the hands-on folks are so nice to talk to. They know they have good beer, they are proud of it, and they will still sit at your table and chat. Definitely worth a visit...as long as you bring a DD! read more

Best selection of beers in Missouri! Flights are generous pours and offer a really diverse selection. All of the beers are good. Everyone can find something they will enjoy. Staff are super friendly. Warm, and genuinely make customers feel welcome. We came from KC just to visit this brewery. It was worth the trip and will be a place we visit whenever possible. read more

The only reason they lose a star is that you have to drive over the river and through the woods just to get there. 1 hour and 40 minute drive from Springfield. My friends and I got there at 12:15 (they open at 12), sampled everything they had available and some that wasn't technically even available. They have an unfinished tasting room upstairs where you can sit and enjoy a cold beer and soak up the atmosphere. The brewery itself is inside a 70+ year old barn on the owner's property that they've fixed up. Outside, in the winter they have a couple of steel fire pits. Complete with logs lying around to stoke the fire with. It was 45 degrees F when we were there and we had our first round outside at a picnic table. The fire pits kept the temperature comfortable. But I'm getting ahead of myself. When we went inside to get our first beers, the owner and his wife were already helping some other people get growlers. For the uninitiated, a growler is a gallon jug filled with beer. After they finished with the customers before us, they asked if they could help us and actually remembered us from when we saw them in Springfield at the Big Brothers / Big Sisters Beer Fest. The gave us samples of everything they had available right then. They had their McKinney Eddy Amber Ale, Old Tom Porter, Missouri Mule IPA, and we even got to try the Ozark Firefly Wheat before it went into the Brite Tank. Every one of them was delicious even the room temperature uncarbonated Ozark Firefly Wheat. I'm not an IPA drinker, but theirs was great. The McKenney Eddy Amber Ale was something special and I spent most of the day drinking that. I do believe that once they finish cooling and carbonating that Firefly Wheat, they're going to have a hard time not winning some kind of award. He said it'd be ready Wednesday, but we couldn't really wait that long. We grabbed some camp chairs and went upstairs where we proceeded to drink copious amounts of beer. The owner's wife (who I guess is technically the owner too) kept coming up and asking if we needed anything and kept bringing us more beer so that we wouldn't kill ourselves going up and down the stairs and they gave us all the free beer snacks we could eat. The bathroom downstairs had a 2 gallon galvanized bucket for a sink and galvanized pipe ran up for the faucets. It was a pretty neat looking set up. The lighting upstairs was strung 8 feet over our heads and the outer walls were covered with spray foam insulation keeping the temperature well controlled. After they finish the upstairs tasting room, their plan is to add an additional 1000 sqft patio. They also have the old hay hook still in the ceiling. Anyway, about 4:30 we realized that it was getting late and needed to go (thank God for Dave our designated driver). I took home a Growler gift box with McKinney Eddy Amber Ale and 4 pint glasses. I love the beer here and I love Springfield's own Mother's Brewery. I guess I just love great craft beer and I hope these guys keep making it for a long long time. read more

Scott N. sums this place up pretty well. We were visiting family in nearby Licking and made the 30-minute trek out here. It is well worth the trip! Brian and Jolene are fantastic hosts, the barn is really beautiful, and most importantly, the beer is very good. They've finished the upstairs - complete with the bar, and several tables for hanging out. While they don't serve food, they were totally cool with us leaving, and coming back with our lunch from Subway (about 10 minutes away) so we could continue to enjoy their beer over sandwiches. Favorite beers included the porter and Black Walnut Wheat. They offer free pours so you can taste each one. You can purchase 4 oz glasses, and a proper pint (served in 20 oz glasses for an exact 16 oz of beer+head) It was super hot outside, but they had the a/c and fans so the barn was nice and cool. Outside there are tables and benches, and the view is pretty unbeatable. These folks obviously are loving what they're doing here, and it shows. Yes, it's kind of far from everything, but if you're anywhere nearby, it's so worth it to come out for an afternoon and enjoy some good beer. read more

So glad a brewery is open in the Houston area! This place was great, the brewtenders were very friendly and let us sample whatever we wanted before we made our decision. There are plenty of tables inside and out for large groups. They also had a great variety of beers all at great prices. The sampler was such a deal! Ive been into craft beers for years and really loved the bronzeback pale ale, a great American pale ale. I'd recommend the McKinney amber to anyone and the float trip is a great lighter beer, perfect for the anytime and especially in the summer. All of the darker brews were very balanced as well. In 2014 the brewery is open on Saturdays from 2 - 7 pm. The atmosphere of the brewery is very relaxed and is a great time. The beers are inexpensive and very tasty. Bring along a designated driver and your own snacks (they don't serve food) and make a day of it. This is well worth the out of the way location. read more

I've been to several breweries throughout the U.S.. This is by far the best. Every beer was excellent. The brewery is rural and worth the drive. No food service, however you can bring your own and they provide a grill. Debbie and Shayna were extremely great at hosting us. I will definitely return to this great place soon. Shayna and Debbie are both beautiful as well. So for all you men, there is no better place to get great beer and visit two beautiful great ladies! read more

You won't find a better atmosphere, beer and people then at PRBC. The BARn is converted into a tap room that overlooks their cow pasture. They often feature live music on Saturday afternoons. There is no food but we always plan ahead and pack some snacks. We love this place! Oh yeah, the beer is GOOD too. read more

You would never guess that an award winning brewery would be located in such a remote, beautiful setting. The owners are very modest but they have won an American Beer Festival Gold medal, a World Beer Cup gold and numerous other awards. They make very balanced beers true to style and they make a nice variety. They just had their 4th "Aleiversary" and held a wonderful party to celebrate. It's an easy 1 hr 40 min drive from Springfield and about an hour from Rolla. The brewery and taproom are located in a renovated barn but they are building an expansion to support the demand for their beer. Their taproom is typically only open on Saturday from 2-7 pm so load your picnic basket and go enjoy an afternoon of live music and family friendly atmosphere. read more
