We, along with many other alumni, went to a Suffolk private school that was a common filter school for Christopher Academy kids to go to after the 4th grade cut off -- The fact that every single one of us among my sister and I's age groups (We are 5 years apart in age, so about 20+ kids) graduated with straight A's in the top of our classes is not a coincidence. Even now, I still see that many of the recent valedictorians of our Suffolk private high school are Christopher Academy alumni (our high school sends us the graduation mailer every year). Long story short- the curriculum, class size, and amazing teachers here laid a foundation for us all that put us ahead of our peers at our Suffolk private school, college & beyond. My parents STILL donate to this school 18 years later & do not donate a nickel to the previously mentioned school that we went to for middle/high school. We are in the process of helping multiple friends make the change to send their young children here based on our experiences. My girls are absolute ambassadors of OKS, as I see the totality of what Oak Knoll offers, in them. The teachers and faculty are like family, the care they exude is ever so natural and nurturing. Don't get me started on the academics. In the lower school, the classes are interwoven. I was actually intrigued to learn that in the sixth grade for instance, as the origin of the golden ratio was being taught in math class, the students were also being shown how it was applied to the Mona Lisa painting in their Arts class, it's application in the Renaissance era in Social Studies, and there was reference to the concept in Science, and even in the library classes. My sixth grader was absolutely fascinated relating her experience. As for the nurturing environment, you can sense the importance of core values in the school, it only takes one visit to feel it in the air. The students are also exposed to practical religious tenets, helping those in need, etc. I honestly cannot say enough about Oak Knoll. Academically, most of the teachers are great, but some have literally no idea what they are doing. It's important to note that MBS hires teaching staff who have PHDs in their field, but never learned to be teachers. In fact, my tenth grade chemistry teacher had a PHD in physics, but no chemistry experience past high school and no teaching degree, and he was very open about this. I feel that the dress-code goes beyond what is normal and necessary for a school environment, and stifles self-expression. Teen and pre-teen years are extremely formative in every way, including style, so to force kids to look professional everyday could have poor results. I think it's important to let kids have colorful hair and graphic tees, even if they look ridiculous by some standards. Let kids be kids. In my own opinion, high school should be a time where teenagers are guided along as they discover themselves and who they want to be. At MBS, it seems like we are guided towards a specific path, regardless of ourselves and what we want. If this is the path you're looking for anyway, this school will be your dream. MBS will deliver your stereotypical private school experience. Very shallow, very reputation oriented, very damaging to students that don't fit the bill.

We needed long hours since both my husband and I commute into NYC. We visited around 6 different daycares and preschools and this one had the longest hours from 6:30am-7pm and the brightest and cleanest facility stocked full of toys/books. Ms. Jaime the site director was extremely welcoming from the onset and took time to get to know each of my children from day one. All the teachers are very nice, warm, and engaged with the children. My children really enjoyed their time there. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to any of my friends or family.

Alumni seem to feel so much like SHP was their home that they never forget about the brotherhood & continue to introduce themselves if they see anything that makes them feel like the student or adult must have some tie to the school. There are so many clubs & sports available. Students have so many different types of opportunities to find "their tribe". The students truly enter as boys and leave as self confident educated men. The education is second to none with many different areas of study. The discipline must be just right b/c the boys all are well mannered, decent people that learn very quickly how to advocate for themselves. In addition, they are required to learn & participate in volunteer work yearly by assisting their fellow man with no judgement. Their values become incredibly strong. It is truly a wonderful school for boys from various economic & demographic parts of the world. I highly recommend it.

When our child started school, it was apparent that they had repurposed an old storage room, and that the student:teacher ratio was far worse than advertised. When we complained about the state of the classroom, rather than do the right thing and hire additional staff, the school administration expelled our child from the school on zero days' notice, despite having no documented behavioral or academic issues of any kind. During the expulsion meeting, the administration admitted to being unable to hire additional staff and _intentionally_ overbooking the class sizes during registration. The founder of this school is obsessed with metrics. If your child represents a threat to one of those metrics (be it student-teacher ratio, standardized test scores, etc.) then they will absolutely throw your child under the bus to make the school look better. Be warned.

Newark offers the international baccalaureate (IB) degree. It is a mysterious degree that the…read moreschool brags about that they use to claim they are a high level academic achieving degree. There are many problems with the IB program. The easiest problem to demonstrate is that IB classes and exams can only be taken in only in the junior and senior year. There are many amazingly academic students that must wait until junior year to take the IB exam. If you look internet you will see many smart student question this policy. Are all student homogeneous? Do all student suddenly become smart at the same time? The school had tried to get rid of all AP exams but have failed in many areas. The most notable is math. There are many kids taking AP calculus in middle school and quite a few finish both AP calculus exams in middle school. The school could not also get rid of AP history. AP history is done in the sophomore year. After further review the science depart felt that AP Physic C was more rigorous than IB Physic HL. There were problems with the Econ SL class that the econ teacher created a Econ honor class to replace it. Unfortunately all other AP classes have been banished from newark. At one time classes were designated as hybrids AP/IB classes. This allows many of its students to achieve AP national scholar status which requires the a student to pass for AP exams with a score of 4 or above. IB is also very expensive compared to AP for the school. The school tuition is outrageously expensive. IB program is contributing to this outrageous high tuition.
