Heartbroken and hungry, we kept walking around the area until suddenly, we find ourselves at Soler Street and this yellow sign was staring back at us: GREEN. PLANET. VEGETARIAN. Thank you, universe! I've tried a few vegetarian places in Binondo, but this relatively newish addition to Chinatown takes the whole cake! Taiwanese-owned Green Planet Vegetarian serves a variety of tasty vegetarian and vegan food at super 'sulit' prices. Much like a super clean, glorified 'turo-turo', you can get a rice meal with 3 viands for only Php 100, and with complimentary hot tea, too! Try their veggie sisig (creamy and dairy-free!) and their crowd-pleaser, fried miteng (gluten), which has a beautiful, chewy texture and savory flavor--amazing when dipped in vinegar. Another favorite of mine is their radish cake, a slice for only Php 15! Being sold here as well are vegetarian and vegan food items such as Magic Meat (dehydrated TVP made locally), canned barbecue sauce, and this Taiwanese granulated mushroom seasoning (reminiscent of the local Magic Sarap seasoning--look for the package with that very strange smiling mushroom). I've also heard from their staff that they're planning to open a Makati branch!

Despite the use of alternative noodles, the broth and recipe makes up for a spicy Tantanmen. Ended the meal with their Bingsu as dessert which is topped with a generous serving of Mango. See, this area has around 3 reliable vegetarian/vegan restaurants, and among one of them is this glorious Wabi Sabi branch. I've been a long-time customer of their Makati branch, but this place was just so delightful. For one, it was much nicer than their place in The Collective--brick walls, warm lighting, and with a playlist that includes Asobi Seksu, you just can't complain. Actually, I can't complain about anything during my stay. Sure, the whole place was packed with senior citizens lunching on a Sunday, but it just proves how Wabi-Sabi has captured the tastebuds of everyone, not just retired hipsters (Lol) such as myself. I loved my bowl of Viet Pho, a mushroom-based broth noodle soup that comes with crunchy faux pork bits. If you want something warm and light on a rainy day, this is perfect. Other recommendations: Their okonomigyoza is AMAZING. The Banh Mi is a must (you can have it vegan- just specify so they can use the vegan mayo). Vietnamese ca phe is always a good choice, but my all-time favorite is their lemongrass iced tea. Oh, and the service here is far more friendlier and faster than the Makati branch. They whipped up my pho 5 minutes after I ordered it!

Customer service was good, restaurant was cozy, and food was out of this world. I came today and saw they were in a new location. Initially felt "cool" but immediately was greeted with a cold demeanor. Half of our table are Filipino born and raised, while my sister and I are born in the US. I asked for bottled water and they had one bottle left. My dad (born in the Philippines), watched the lady who initially sat us down who mocked me for asking for bottled water. I had my back to the restaurant the entire time, so I didn't see a lot of the interaction, but my dad saw and understood it all. We ordered the sisig - undercooked. The pancit hab hab - underwhelming. They had no soda, and we all (9) had to share 1 big bottle of water. Ok, fine, no troubles. Then, they ran out of plenty of entrees, so we were limited on what to order. My sister watched the staff spray the table while there were still items on it, while my dad watched and listened as the staff were gossiping about all the patrons (including us) in the restaurant. It was quite uncomfortable. Sorry not sorry, but this place is no longer it and the entire staff needs an entire overhaul of retraining if you want to salvage this place.

If only I live near this place, I would definitely be here every week. Greens is a quaint, cozy and quiet place in Scout Castor street, away from the busy atmosphere of Morato. Filipino cuisine is traditionally heavy on the meat, but Greens has creative, tasty renditions for classics such as sisig, barbeque, and fish relleno. For appetizers, try their veggie sticks! If you're vegan, do ask your server though if a dish has no dairy/egg, as some dishes still contain those (but they will be happy to veganize it for you!) And let's not forget dessert. They serve soup, starters, salads, sandwiches, desserts, and Filipino mock meat dishes like fish relleno, sisig, and barbecue. I highly recommend the fish relleno and veggie wraps -- they're hefty, textural, layered with flavor. Their chilled taho is also tasty. The staff accommodates requests for adjusting vegetarian dishes into vegan meals. I did have a slight issue with their soup and shepherd's pie. Both were underseasoned and flat. I understand that some dishes don't include garlic and onion for Ayurvedic reasons, but they could use other spices to enhance their ingredients' natural flavors. Also, if you're sensitive to soy, you might want to skip the mock meat dishes because they're soy-based. The relaxed atmosphere encourages quiet, which is great for those who enjoy eating their meals in peace. The place is also surrounded by greenery, making it a charming spot to sit around. And if you're looking for local plant-based health products like veggie meat, cold-pressed coconut oil, and grains, you can purchase these from their mini-shop. If you want to get acquainted with vegetarian/vegan fare, this is a good place to visit.

I'd say get their quekiam (one of their specialties)--this erm..thing (I don't know, gluten or soy based mock meat?) is stuffed with savory veggies and mushrooms and comes with a spicy red sauce on the side. It's definitely not like the street kikiam which is made of god knows what! Super tasty appetizer... I was excited to try their veg sisig as it was one of their specialties, but I was a bit disappointed as the serving was quite small (at Php 170...) and while it was seasoned well and had a variety of mushrooms and minced tofu/soy/gluten (unsure...), I guess it lacked that creamy sauce that I loved when I used to eat the real pork sisig. It could use some veg mayo or some sauce to elevate it to a really satisfying sisig recreation. However, I should mention that it did come with crumbled chicharon (made of tofu skins) on top! And "worth it" is what TVK's food is all about. This place really knows how to do COMFORT FOOD so, so well. Each meal is plated beautifully and carefully, and (pardon the *vegan* cheese) with so much love. What I love about TVK is how vegan-friendly it is. The menu has "V" markers for vegan dishes, and makes it convenient for us vegans. I recommend the Tocino and Tofu Scramble if you're feeling breakfast-y. The Grilled Salmon with Coriander Pesto is a house favorite. You'll love the "fish" they used, which has a seaweed skin. The Grilled Steak Sandwich is great for meat-loving folks, and very hearty.
