While on the island in October 2025 we stopped in for the largest selection of OBX tourist stuff on Ocracoke. The prices are typical on the island. There are some deals on the front porch before you walk in. The staff seemed like they don't want to be working retail and should be happier living on a cool island. read more

Today, July 31, we went to the shop to pick up some t-shirts. Yes, the store is packed with all kinds of stuff. The low rating is for the employees. Around 3 in the afternoon, they were behind the counter screwing around, yelling, not playing attention to customers, and making the store an annoyance to be in. A quick way to ruin a business. I'll gladly spend money elsewhere. read more

Bottom Line: A large two-story gift shop and souvenir store. Pirate's Chest sure is eye catching! The store is prominently located in Ocracoke Village on the corner of Irvin Garrish Hwy and Back Road. The large building has festive displays outside that really peaked my curiosity. The store is bright, clean and mostly organized although we did find the huge selection of t-shirts hard to shop. The gift shop is probably the largest on Ocracoke Island and although it is independently owned it seems like it was the same stuff that I'd seen at other shops during my two-week trip to the Outer Banks. read more

A lot of fun stuff in the store! What really took me by surprise was the staff behind the counter cursing and yelling about one of their friends. We had kids with us and 1 of the girls (tall, dark hair) was yelling and cursing so loud that I had to take my family out of the store and not purchase anything! Very unprofessional staff! read more

The staff was not good. My daughter and her boyfriend came in there this past rainy Sunday and the two girls working there were whispering, pointing, and making fun of my daughter . Crazy thing is that they spend over $80 bucks in this store on hermit crabs and a t-shirt. The store mainly has junk in it. Don't waste your time going here. Rude staff and junk you don't need. There are many nicer places to shop. read more

I have been coming down to the OBX on vacation for over 30 years, and this is, by far, the worst place to shop on both islands combined. The Pirates Chest's first location was on Hatteras Island and was, 15 years ago, the best place to get little knick-knacks and shirts to take home a bit of the beach. They started this new location, which I was excited about, but after I visited once a few years back and then this year, I will never go back. The original location closed a few years ago, so this is sadly the only one left. Their stuff is, in a word, junk. And so overpriced that it's not worth buying for the 2 weeks it would last before breaking. The shirts are mostly off-color, dumb jokes that have no relation to the true spirit of the islands and are also pricey. I think the icing on the cake is when I walked out front and saw they had driftwood for sale. This is the same driftwood you can pick up for free on the beach. This is one of those stores you gotta just love it for what it is. What's in here? Everything you want and don't need!! LOL. So fun. Tons of shirts. Windchimes, shells, wooden signs stating "It's 5:00 somewhere".., flags plastic toys, expensive deck decor/outside yard decor. Need to walk sideways though so you don't knock things off the shelf or knock someone else into a shelf! Fun place. Mass produced, cheap gifts and tacky beach decor. It's a lot like a small Wings. Definitely check them out for the aforementioned cheap gifts and tacky beach decor. But if you're looking for nicer stuff or more original, there are many more stores on the island. read more

Just visited the store on the 12th of August. I used a credit card (only gets used for gas stations normally) which the employee entered manually, and the next day had two fraudulent Netflix accounts set up using the CC number. All of that was handled through the bank fine, but when I tried to contact the store to speak to a manager, I was hung up on twice. The store is decent, and I feel bad that there is a jerk employee there...but don't let them enter your card for you! read more

I lost my reading glasses and thought just for kicks I'd go there to see if they had any. Bingo! A whole basket full.

This is a neat and decently priced gift shop out on Ocracoke. However, in our experience here, there were many rude tourists who would push past you on the tiny aisles with lots of fragile glass around without so much as an 'excuse me'. Rude tourists also abounded here too. I said something aloud and this couple gave a sour look. Oh well, don't be a freakin' entitled jerk of a tourist and ya won't get called out...Suffice to say, aside from the bloody rude tourists, it's a nice place to go on Ocracoke. Fun beachy vibe, ample parking. Tons of souvenirs at excellent prices. Grabbed a kid size pareo (wrap) for my daughter for under 3 bucks. Great collection of earrings and other jewelry for under $5 which is just right for beach jewelry ! read more

Nasty workers! I spent 100 dollars and the two girls were nasty to me. You wouldn't have that summer job without customers. I know help is hard to find in OBX so this won't do anything. Shop Ragshop instead, people. read more

I've never seen such a high amount of random stuff concentrated in such a small store. The Pirates Chest has more doodads and gizmos you could possibly imagine. The items sold here range from bottle openers to live hermit crabs to toilet seat covers. This review would be millions of words long if I listed each item sold here. There's a nondescript staircase that leads to some cheap, crappy t-shirts upstairs. Literally hundreds of shirts. My biggest complaint is that there's not a lot of room, so there's always tourists bumping into each other. There's also a ton of random crap hanging from the ceiling, which I always bumped into since I'm tall. read more
