The few reviews accusing this place of racism or discrimination are completely unfounded. I will concede that Steve, the owner, is an acquired taste. He is brash, unforgiving, and filterless. He says what he means and means what he says. Bluntly put... he isn't for everyone, especially those with dainty feelings. All that said, Steve is a good man that runs a tight ship. He matches energy and will give what he gets. I have frequented his establishment many times, and he has always treated me and my guests with respect, but make no mistake....he doesn't give a #$%@ what you think. The range is small and welcoming, and Steve is willing to share expert advice. This place is no frills. That works for some people and not for others. Steve is a old school no nonsense person and believes in down to earth advice without any sugar coating and sometimes some of the more sensitive customers may not understand this approach. Great little range and firearms dealer run by a retired Philadelphia policeman who did everything from walking the beat, to bomb squad, to SWAT. Steve has a very unique personality to him, but he's one of if not the best firearms instructors in the area. If you're new to firearms, and you're willing to listen and learn, he WILL teach you how to effectively use a firearm to defend your life. Steve will position you to make sure you have a proper stance and proper aim with your weapon to ensure that you are accurate (yes, this can mean he's "hands on" however he tells you beforehand and does so respectfully. Steve can take someone who is deathly afraid of holding a firearm and train them to be as accurate and effective as anyone else. He did this with my mother. By the way- his training is free. The owner was very rude when I called to ask some simple questions, he didn't even allow me finish asking one question before he hung up on me in the most rude way...... he said he doesn't let people in his building who doesn't know what they're doing, yet on his website it's advertised that he does training & have children on there. I called back to ask him did he mean to hang up he admitted that he did and continued to be rude ! I've read all the reviews and all I can say you have to get to know Steve. When it comes to handguns he knows his shit. If you wanna learn how to shoot straight and safely he will take the time to walk you through it. He doesn't take any shit so when you're there you feel everyone shooting is on the same page. Love going there for practice which I might add everyone that owns a handgun should do on a regular basis. Don't just buy one and forget about it. Pistol people is great! Steve is very knowledgeable and patient. He goes above and beyond to TEACH THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE KNOWLEDGE. he is pationate about what he does. He is one person you will want to listen to. He will teach you everything and will not treat you like you are stupid if you do not know he will explain everything meticulously and will make sure you understand and will explain in multiple different ways to make sure you get it. I was a member at a range close by and will not go there anymore. The gun safety was non- existent. At pistol people they don't put up with the nonsense. This is most likely why lot of law enforcement shoot there. read more

My girlfriend and him were "friends" and she was naive and didn't realize what he was doing but he'd constantly hit on her and ask to see her bare chest and she'd say no and giggle it off but it never stopped him from asking over and over. I've been to several ranges in the Philadelphia area, and have grown to expect mostly the same from them all. What I like about Pistol People is that it's relatively close to my house and the guy that mans the desk most of the time, Steve. is a good dude. He's doesn't take anyone's shit and calls it as he sees it, which is what you would want in a guy who runs a gun shop and range. I crack jokes with him when I come in and have good convos when I'm not in a hurry. The prices are reasonable and the rental selection seemed expansive enough for me. I was able to get my hands on a Glock 17 and 19, Baretta 92, and a Colt 1911 from the stone ages that was so accurate, you'd think it just rolled right off the assembly line. The ammo costs are in line with what you'd get elsewhere, but you're allowed to bring in your own ammo [some restrictions apply]. The range itself is in ok shape, the ventilation works, the lines run smoothly, and I never had to wait for a lane to fire in [I think there are 8 lanes in total]. I've yet to find any issues with the people that shoot there. No one brandishes about weapons in a careless manner, I've yet to see anyone point a loaded gun at me, I see a good amount of military and LEO stop in, so in my mind, it's people who are trained. Steve will also give shooting instruction to those who've never shot a gun before, and it looks pretty thorough watching him work with the customers. Nothing looks rushed; he gives them good instruction in how to stand, line up the sights, how to hold the gun, even to some self defense with a pistol. I remember the first time I shot at another range, the guy just told me to point down range and pull the trigger, which is pretty terrifying if you've never done this sort of thing before. It's a good range, the people who go are friendly and professional, Steve is a good guy who adds character, and I get to shoot shit without feeling endangered. read more

But as I got to talking to him he was a really good dude. He really cares about teaching people about firearm safety and how to defend yourself. I've gone to almost every shooting range in the area, and by far Pistol People is the best. When you walk into the shop, you'll meet Steve, the owner. He's retired US Army, and a retired Philadelphia police officer (from the days of Frank Rizzo when there were more killings in that city in 1 year than the past 5). Bottom line, he's got a good amount of knowledge on firing, maintaining, and training for firearms. He's got a great personality, he'll crack jokes and say outrageous things while you're there simply to see if you break concentration while he's teaching you (before firing of course). If you faulted he corrects the issue. He does this to give you a "real world" atmosphere for personal defense training- face it, out on the streets there will be many distractions. Steve will take the time to teach a beginner to fire like a pro, or critique someone to hone their skills, and best of all- he trains women who have been abused to defend themselves against attackers. The range is small and is less flashy than other places, but that's good because you won't get distracted. Everything is kept near and orderly . I've visited several and each have their pluses and minuses, but as soon as I walked into Pistol People I immediately knew that I wouldn't be shooting there. But, I thought I'd ask a few basic questions to the owner about services and such. He gave me the impression that I was wasting his time. He was very curt, and borderline rude with just two questions from me. Now, I don't know what kind of air I give off, but as a business, if you run off people willing to lay down hundreds of dollars for your product, in this case handguns and range usage, that's a recipe for not staying in business too long. I have to agree with Courtney's assessment. The first and only time I walked into the place, I took about 3 steps inside the door and was greeted by a woman in her mid-20's pointing a Glock at me. As you can imagine, I immediately jumped back in absolute fear. (Hell, I thought I walked in to the wrong door and was down range or something.) When our oldest son moved out he left a ton of ammo and we didn't want to put it in the trash ( for fear of someone getting hurt ) so we decided to take the rounds down here to Steve and he could use them as rounds for people who want to test fire a gun before buying it, which saved Steve money on broken boxes of ammo. The range is small and looks like it's a garage in someone's back yard. The ventilation inside the range is poor but manageable. The best part everything is cheap here. $15 an hour and ammo is well priced. I would go back for the owner and the fact it's reasonably priced.
