The drinks are reasonably priced and there is always a good selection, in the bar area you can order a pizza which is cooked fresh there and then and they serve the delicious pizza right into the early hours, it's a popular after work, after gig/theatre bar and it is without doubt my favourite bar in Bristol - I hope that in 20 years time I'm still eating pizza and drinking pints of cider in Renatos

Right next to the Old Vic, Renatos is a pin in the map of good places to go in Bristol. With a…read morereally nice atmosphere and fairly cheap prices, open fire in the winter and walls entirely adorned with theatre posters or signed photos of various actors from over the years, this is an excellent bar/restaurant which is really worth a look in. I've frequented it many times, perhaps a few too many whilst I was still at college, and the late night pizzas really are quite a selling point - all night they'll serve the traditional and very high quality pizzas to their gradually drunker clientelle. You can take your pick with seating - there's a comfy room with sofas, and the aforementioned fire, to the left of the bar, or else the main room with the poster wallpapered walls has tables, chairs and benches. Without fail getting a seat is always a bit of an art when I've been here, but that's more part of Renatos' charm rather than a failing. Come here more than once and you'll see the same staff - it's a closely run family business. They also own the restaurant across the road (which has the same name), which is a far more traditional restaurant affair and has a wider variety on the menu than just pizza. Both sides of the road are a must.

Have been to nthis place numerous times, and have had a very good meal whether it was lasagne or…read morepizzza ect. However last night my friend and I decided to have the Steak peppata. I cut into my steack and notuce a thick piece of grizzle running through the middle. Having cut this out and the fat around the outside I was left with a mediocre piece of meat. I noticed that my friends steak was a lot thicker and juicer and looke3d 10oz. Mine looked more like 6oz. He said it tasted very nice. However mine did not, it was very chewy. I called the manager over to complain and he said that all meat was the same from the same butcher and then said to me that he would give me their butchers telephone number to complain to him. Now that is something, me complain to a restaurants supplier. I could not explain ton him that it was up to me to complain. After a heated discussion the manager then said that he would cook me another steak which I declined. He then went into the kitchen and came out with 3 steaks sealed saying to look and see how good they were. Yes of course they were good, mine was not and that was the one we were talking about. I tried to explain this to him that those may have been ok but mine was not and he kept on about how his meat came from a very good butcher. I told him that if I paid £24.50 for a sirlion then I expected a decent sirlion what I got was a piece of meat from a sizzler pub that charged £9.50. He did take the price of the steak of the bill but that was refused by me as that was not the point. My friend then made a compromise and we would not pay for the steak but give the money for waiters gratuities. However I shall not be going back t o this restaurant again. Its a pity because the other times have been enjoyable and decent food.

After the greetings we got down to the very Bristolion tradition of consuming Thatchers Gold. Thankfully they had these in abundance from a large bottle at a not to shabby 3.50. There is a fantastic reasonably priced wine menu, we just didn't fancy it. Decor wise this place is tastefully done but it aint gonna blow your brains out ! Lots of neutral colours. Which for me is just fine. Cause I came to eat not look at the walls ! And eat we did oh yes ! We started with prochitto with melon and calamari. All perfect the calamari was particularly good with a melt on yer tounge texture. For mains my missus opted for the sea food tomatoe pasta dish. Cant remember the name but it was a proper party on the taste buds. I had the Casa pizza which was sublime. I dont normally do pizza eating out but afer seeing a neighbouring tables come I opted and my word am I glad I did. Its was the best pizza ive had in years! Topped off with a limochella shot for dessert this was one unforgettably good meals that didn't break the bank. Oh, and did I mention that the service was great ?

Our order was taken very quickly and I was impressed by the range of dishes on the menu; it is definitely a cut above the usual Italian restaurant fare. I had the Fregula di Frutti di Mare to start, which was not at all the seafood soup that I was expecting but more like a watery risotto. It was a bit too creamy for my taste and I wished they'd mentioned that on the menu, but there we are. For mains I thought I had ordered a penne with squid ink sauce, but when it came I was dismayed to find that I'd actually ordered something that was covered in cheese and cream sauce, which being lactose intolerant I just couldn't eat. However, after my profuse apologies for mis-reading the menu, they very quickly replaced it with the squid ink number (it was the spaghetti, not the penne!) so full marks to them for doing that. I liked the ambience of the place too, from the clichéd wax-encrusted wine bottle candle holders to the quirky decorative touches and pictures. I'll keep this place bookmarked for my next visit to Bristol.
