I love this little pizza place. Three years ago Renato moved back from Amsterdam to his home town…read moreEnkhuizen after ten years making the best pizza's in the capital of Holland. He sold his old pizza place to new owners and taught them all this tricks but they never convinced me to come back to this place. The pizza's are always excellent and the crust is nicely thin and crispy due to the fact that the dough has risen twice. This is Renato's secret to a great crust. The quality of the toppings and ingredients are very high and always from local organic produce (tomatoes, basil and cheese) or taken straight back from Italy. Renato goes back to his home country at least twice a year to bring the best ingredients home. He even makes his own spicy olive oil! Ask Renato if you can buy a bottle to take back home. My Vale 47 named after Valantino Rossi, was superb. Nice touch adding the homemade buffalo mozzarella after cooking to cool down the spicy meats. The Gorizza topped with grilled peppers, salame picante and blue cheese has always been my favorite. This is real Italian pizza made in the traditional way, they offer Italian genuine appetizers and special dishes if you ask for them. Nice desserts to round it all off. The homemade tiramisu is excellent! The cosy restaurant is stylishly decorated, the staff are always very friendly. I never eat pizza in Amsterdam anymore and always keep coming back to this family run business. Make sure to reserve a table if you want to enjoy Renato's pizza's. Note: they don't take credit cards.

If you like spicy, try the spicy olive oil. The insalata caprese is to die for.

After a bit of exploring the area and finding at least 3 more Italian restaurants, we decided to get a table at Da Paolo. Let me begin by saying that it is FANCY. The staff was impeccably dressed and the interior was classy. They even hang your coats for you. The kitchen is visible from the entrance to help lure you in. Once inside, the table was big and chairs comfortable. I noticed that almost everyone besides me was dressed formal (well, I did spend my evening at a zoo!). Since I was carrying two large bottles of water for the hotel room later, the wait staff thought that I had brought my own water with me to save money and asked me to order water. Kind of presumptuous but still not bad enough to knock off a star from the rating. I mean this is Netherlands, people are direct (rude). The menu doesn't have a bunch of vegetarian options but if you settle for pizza they are able to make it just the way you want it. I went with the regular tomato sauce pasta with mushrooms and some zucchini. V had a pizza with some veggies. They also served some bread to nibble on as we waited for our food to arrive. The house red wine was nothing spectacular but good nonetheless. For dessert, we shared a tiramisu. I followed up with a double espresso to help me muster strength for the walk back in storm winds and rain. All in all, 4 stars for a metropolis like Amsterdam but deserving 5 for a small town like Emmen. I was expecting to eat at a snack bar past 6PM.
