The Margherita Antica!
David S.

This pizzeria chain and this very location has won an award, so of course I had to try it out. This review reflects two visits. It's a narrow and deep space, which can feel a bit cramped. It was clean and bright, with a wine cooler full of bottles Servers are young, energetic, and peppy. They are also knowledgeable about how the pizzas are made, and kept up to VPN standards in summer when the temperature and humidity are extremely hostile to VPN standards. I got a Marinara the first time, and the Margherita Antica the second time. Both were excellent thin crust pizzas with perfect char and chew. I really enjoyed the Buffalo mozzarella on the Antica for the creamy mouthfeel it added. Sauce was savoury and a bit sweet. Recommended as a great place for Neapolitan style pizza in The Beach!

One of the four spots in Toronto with the VPN certification. This certification means that pizzas meet the strict standards set by the birthplace of pizza itself, Naples, Italy. I just came back from Italy and visited Naples. Loved the pizza! I wanted to experience the same thing. So, yes this has the vpn and Margherita pizza I was looking for. As far as a pizza goes it's not bad and I think most would enjoy it. the pizza itself was much too dry. It lost its marker of lusciousness and just crave-able freshness. Maybe left a little longer than 90 seconds to have this harder less wet crust than what I've experienced in Naples. It's extremely high heat so care of timing is everything. On the other hand, it took so long for my order that I had to inquire. I looked around and there were a few tables. Definitely, past prime lunch hour. I was befuddled and disappointed. The space has a clean, modern vibe.

Smoked Meat Pizza

The buzz around this new resto well-founded! We had the most enjoyable lunch and will return again and again. Very different menu with many choices, first courses as well as pizzas. We started with the Stracciata di Burrata, perfect size for 2 people. Burrata cheese with caramelized grapes, served with warm bread. Sheer delight! We also shared the Smoked Meat pizza with caramelized onions. Delicious! We were expertly served by Madeleine who was very interested in hearing how we were enjoying the fare. Such a great addition the neighbourhood! We will definitely return.

Really great pizza. Also offers tasty appetizers and a solid wine list. They did a great job on the decor. Nice spot for a date.

The Favorites We kicked things off with their saffron‑kissed Arancini--bite‑sized spheres of rice and smoked mozzarella, godsends dipped into bright tomato-marinara and pesto. Next came the Pizzano pizza: a perfectly blistered crust layered with pepperoni, Calabrian chilies, fior di latte, hot honey drizzle, and aged Parmigiano--an addictive balance of sweet‑heat and savory richness. The pillowy Gnocchi arrived next--smothered in butternut squash purée, earthy wild mushrooms, hazelnuts, sage brown‑butter, and a final snow of Parmigiano. And the Fritto Misto was a crunchy delight: lightly breaded shrimp, calamari, scallops, all perked up with zesty lemon‑caper aioli. Setting the Tone We started with cocktails, which hit the right note--elegant, balanced, and a little unexpected. They added a celebratory lift that carried right into the meal. Service was smooth and welcoming, striking that hard-to-nail mix of polish and warmth.

Huge, dense, custardy, creamy. A tad pricey but worth it. Also got coffee which was pretty standard. Not sure what this place is like as a bistro and wine bar. As I commute from the Durham region on weekdays, Friday is the only day that opens later time (7:30), and I finally got the chance to try the food on a Friday afternoon! I bought - Olive loaf - Croissant (plain)] - Fig tart - Pear tart - Pâté en croute The olive loaf had a loooot of olives in it. It tastes great by itself, but I dipped it in good olive oil and balsamic. Great!!! The croissant was light, airy, and flaky. Nice butter flavor follows the bite. Fig tart and pear tart had a lot of fruits in them, not too sweet, which I appreciated. They do not cover the taste up with cream fillings and extract the ingredients' character and best texture/flavors/tastes. Also had a good buttery kick! Pate en croute has a lovely looking. The color of cranberries and pistachio makes it look festive & gorgeous. This savory food comes with slices of pickles which had a naturally sour, gentle flavor, which gave it a refreshing spike. They had a lot of wines as well, if you are a wine lover, you want to check this place out. They had beers as well for a beer lover like me :) Of course, I got a can of IPA from Merit brewery in Hamilton. I have never seen it before at any LCBO around here, excited! I hope to have a chance to visit here again sometime soon!

Relaxing place, especially on Friday after work. :) They have food that is not typical of regular pubs, such as bone mallow, oysters and octopus. Will try them next time.

Golden Pigeon occupies the space where Ben Wicks used to be, which is below street level with stairs in the front. Inside it is fairly dark with various games situated on the left/south side of the venue, and when I walked around inside I noticed a shelf with board games at the wall on the north side. I wasn't planning on staying late so I only ordered one beer (Devil's Pale Ale from Great Lakes Brewery) but everyone else with me ordered food and beer including desserts; the food all looked and smelled quite nice to me and the consensus from my friends was that their choices were quite enjoyable. My beer was quite good too and their draft menu features a wide variety of quality beers on offer. The prices for both food and beer are pretty standard for the type of venue this is. Our service was fairly prompt and quite friendly; there were 2 skee ball games not too far from where we sat, one or both of which were frequently played by others while we were there. They were loud enough to make conversation a little more difficult so I took a star off of my rating for that. Being a German Beer Hall styled venue, I do understand that the overall 'ambiance' conveyed will be loud and somewhat boisterous. By the time I left around 9:30 pm it was somewhat more crowded inside while the patio had largely cleared. I quite enjoyed my first visit to Golden Pigeon and I hope to revisit before too long to have a different beer and maybe some food.
