We went to PJI Law for Estate Planning. The experience was great at first. We bought a 4-year plan. I called a couple of years ago to update the plan...never got a call back. I called again in Jan 2026 which was still within the 4-year point. Never called me back. I visited the agency in Feb of this year to inquire as to why they weren't returning my calls. Never gave me a straight answer. They did inform me, however, that my four-year plan had just expired. They did ask what I wanted done and that they'd be willing to do it for fee(s)...and said they'd call me back that night...never did. So, they deliver initially...but any follow-up with them, at least in my case, was just not there. I think deep down...it's just about the money...so just be leery of this if you choose to go with them. The problem going back to them now is that the trust is broken. read more

The circuit court of Virginia determined that my lawyer, Kevin Jaros' billing was unreasonable. My lemon law case was settled out of court in my favor, but the defendants refused to pay my legal bills, claiming they included unnecessary and excessive activities, block billing and administrative tasks charged at senior lawyer rates. The case for the legal fees went to a Circuit Court of Virginia hearing My lawyer decided not to attend and instead sent a junior partner, Bret Giaimo, whose hands were visibly shaking and voice kept breaking up with nerves. Judge Stoney was clearly not satisfied with the Giaimo's explanation for Jaros' billing practices and awarded me only 70% of my costs as reasonable, leaving me over $11,000 out of pocket. When I asked Jaros to amend his billing to better reflect what the judge determined as reasonable, he refused. Even when I asked him to split the difference he flatly refused. To add insult to inquiry, after the court hearing Jaros sent me a long email telling me that I should look at this as a victory because the defendants were not happy with the amount they had to pay out . He then billed me a further $113 for the 'pleasure' of his email. Overall, I was billed more than $40,000 and was awarded $29,000 by the court as reasonable fees. My three-year ordeal with PJI Law in Fairfax, Virginia, serves as both a warning and a guide for anyone seeking estate or health care planning services. I also share four recommendations to help others avoid risks it took me three years to uncover. Despite my 83-year-old mother signing a contract promising her customized legal documents, PJI Law delivered standard boilerplate documents with minor changes, leaving both her estate and medical care highly vulnerable in eight critical areas I outlined below. The estate attorney ill advised us to ignore rather than correct non-applicable sections in her Trust which would have granted powers far beyond what was requested or necessary for her estate. I submitted revisions to correct these issues, but the firm refused both the revisions and completion of her Trust, acknowledging in writing that this could place her estate at risk of probate. I strongly questioned the firm's professional and ethical integrity--for decisions that put my elderly mother's estate at risk of probate and their attempt to silence me. Despite my delivering a formal copyright notice for customized revisions for all her documents completed over three years, PJI Law refused to delete my copyrighted material without a signed release--barring me from exposing these risks and warning others. This wasn't just work--it was God given work to honor my mother. I share a small portion of my findings. PJI Law's Trust document appeared to favor Trustees over her interests: 1. Authorized self-dealing despite state law restriction--compromised her Christian values. 2. Limited Trustees' liability, excusing errors or mistakes regarding the law unless done in "bad faith"--potential for financial mismanagement. 3. Authorized Trustees to spend estate funds for their legal defense for "any claim" to the point of exhausting the trust, unless done in "bad faith"--risk of estate depletion. PJI Law's Trust document also contradicted my mother's stated goal of authorizing limited powers: 1. Authorized Trustees to invest, loan, and borrow despite her prohibiting such broad, unnecessary powers--potential for financial exploitation. 2. Authorized Trustees to acquire, manage, and exploit oil, gas, or mineral rights despite her not owning nor requesting such investments--potential for unnecessary, volatile investment risk. 3. Authorized Trustees to pay any beneficiary's tuition or funeral expenses despite her prohibiting such financial support--potential for financial mismanagement. PJI Law's Health Care documents were even more concerning: 1. PJI Law authorized itself to determine my mother's capacity and decide whether a conservatorship or guardianship was necessary for her--without her knowledge, request, or consent. 2. PJI Law authorized her Health Care Agent to donate her body at the Agent's discretion and for any purpose, including for medical research--without her knowledge, request, or consent. My Advice to Protect Your Estate and Health Care Plans 1. Review every section of your documents, even though long (her documents were 150+ pages) and contain legal language. 2. Consider AI tools like ChatGPT to help explain complex legal language, flag potential risks, and identify protective measures, but use with caution and skill to ensure guidance and content align with estate law in your state. 3. Revise documents to meet goals: * Ensure the Trust grants authority only necessary to achieve goals, reflects appropriate liability for Trustees, and excludes sections that conflict with state law, are non-applicable, or contradict your goals. * Ensure health care documents list only approved individuals, do not grant authority to donate your body or organs without your consent, and include protective measures against elder abuse. 4. If a firm refuses to make justified revisions included in your contract, you may file in small claims court for breach of contract. Generally, an attorney is not needed and it provides a relatively quick resolution. Some firms settle out of court to avoid negative publicity. read more

I recommend you to not hire this firm for simple deed work (IE removing my deceased mother and replacing her with my wife on the deed). I supplied all needed legal documents to review the scope of this VERY BASIC LEGAL TASK -- The current deed and my mother's will and death certificate. I made it very clear to their non-legal gatekeeper (A friend of mine and the ONLY REASON I considered using this FIRM in the first place) that I was not interested in using their Estate Planning Service and only wanted a FIXED FLAT FEE QUOTE for this basic legal service. My friend quoted me $775.00. I expressed this is a reasonable fee and let's proceed to next step. WOW --- The next step was my review of the FIRM's -- "Client Agreement" -- This agreement was written as a legal retainer agreement (actual legal expenses could exceed the $775.00 I needed to pay to BEGIN the service) which to be frank I would have had NO ISSUES had I signed up for completing an Estate Plan. I made significant strikes through the agreement and made it a simple FIXED FLAT FEE for the service I requested. My friend informed me that their CEO Paul Abraham stated my changes were to extensive and the FIRM could not proceed forward. My friend also stated I should just trust the firm that it would not exceed the $775.00. Being tenacious and my significant background in working with several legal firms, I decided to accept 99 percent of Paul's "Client Agreement" with only two minor changes noted below (and this time I decided to copy in the Firm's CEO Paul Abraham and not my friend). "In exchange for us beginning to provide the services listed above, you agree to pay the Firm a flat fee of $775.00" My request was to strike the word " beginning" and strike the word "provide" and replace it "complete". My friend informed me that I clearly do not understand how a law firm operates and to not contact the firm again. My friend is not a lawyer and has been only working for the firm for 2.5 years. I have zero issues with my friend and I only have issues with the FIRM. I have extensive experience in working with several legal firms. As a net worth financial advisor for Ameriprise Financial Advisor (1999-2022) I have worked with several legal firms to coordinate Estate Planning services with my past clients. As the current CFO of WiSC Enterprises, I work with international legal firms. I contacted my corporate legal firm -- Foley & Lardner LLP and within 24 hours my simple deed change request will be done for a flat fee of $350 plus recording fees and no "Client Agreement" was needed for this very easy to do basic legal service. I strongly recommend that you do not hire this law firm for any litigation regarding a will. Most importantly for anyone looking to hire this law firm, do not sign their Client Agreement without making them take out the sentence that says "If the invoice remains unpaid for 8 days, you agree that we are authorized to process payment with ANY payment method (eCheck or credit/debit card) on file, including any used to pay for a consultation or advanced deposit"! They will charge any card that you used to make a payment along the way and they think that this agreement allows them to freely charge a card even when you explicitly tell them that you aren't paying the bill yet. They charged our Business Debit card $5200 that I used for a smaller second invoice without my permission and claim they have the right to charge a "pre-approved card on file". This card and account belonged to a business account that I share with another business partner and they did not have authorization to charge this card. Even though I manually entered this card on a small second payment, they felt they had the right to charge it again. I intentionally paid the advance deposit with an eCheck so no card would be on file. Filed a claim with Wells Fargo and won and the money was returned so that should be a red flag when they think as attys they have the right to do that. At no time did I state that the card I used was to be kept on file for the firm's perpetual authority to charge it for ongoing charges and I explicitly told them I was not paying the bill yet until I had my questions answered from the lawyers. They also sent multiple emails within a few days time that were so convoluted. One was a new bill notice demanding payment of $5200 the SAME DAY or they would charge my "pre-approved card on file". Other emails stated "please let us know if you would like to charge the card you used for the previous payment" to which I DID NOT answer "yes". Even another email apologizing for 2 bills sent at once and so late, and that I could have more time to pay it. Yet they ignored my emails and still charged the business card. This language suggests that they knew they needed approval to charge that card and that they did not have blanket authority to do so. This inconsistency clearly undermines their claim that the client agreement gave them authorization of such charges. The firm refuses to return the money which was charged to a business card shared with another person. I have filed reports with the VA Bar, CFPB, Wells Fargo, FTC, Consumer Affairs, BBB and small claims. Additionally, this firm caused me to lose my case with their misrepresentation of the costs of the case and didn't file the most important motion I needed to be able to fight this case, but of course charged me for that motion. Be careful as they will switch attorneys on you with suddenly large bills to cover what appears to be fees for the communication between the lawyers just to get the new lawyers up to speed on your case. I was told with the first lawyer that the case could cost upwards to 20-25k and we both agreed not to pursue a specific strategy that could cost 50-100k. However, after the new attorney's they switched me to started working on the case, a new $5200 bill came immediately. I was shocked and after pushing to get answers on what were the costs of the case looking like since at that point I had incurred already $12,000 with nothing filed in the court on my behalf, I was told in email that the costs would be 50-150k possibly more for a TWO HOUR TRIAL on a lost original will. Obviously, I was livid as I would never have spent a dime on attorney's if I knew that was the cost, it wasn't worth it for a $250,000 estate. I wasted $12,000 and was forced to drop them and have no representation in court. When my cousin and I appeared for trial, we learned that PJI Law never filed the motion to bring my cousin on as they stated that they were doing in emails (and charged for). On top of that, they made me sign an agreement to come off the case in exchange for my cousin to come on the case but since they only made me sign the agreement to come off without filing the motion for my cousin to come on the case, neither one of us was allowed to participate in the trial.Both of us were not on the case at trial! When I quickly tried to find another attorney they all said there wasn't enough time to prepare for the trial date. One attorney when learning who I had fired for a law firm stated they were awful and he loves when he's up against someone who has this law firm because they make so many mistakes as they did with me. He stated for 12k he would already have witnesses and subpoenas right from the start for my case. I didn't even have one motion filed in the court on my behalf, and I paid to have myself taken off the case! Whitney is a highly professional and caring attorney.
