It is definetely a "get it done" vibe - you probably won't be chatting with everyone else working out. They have TV's around the screen that displayed other people's heart rate/calories burned. I'm not sure how you get your info on there but it was a cool touch. The gym is bigger than you'd think. They have a whole section with cardio, a section with weights/machines, a cafe, a larger misc. area that had random machines and cycling bikes, a clear room with large mirrors (great for yoga) and a separate room that had CrossFit equipment. Jeannette is always on time and prepared.   She is knowledgeable, funny, and thorough.  During the COVID-19 stay home order, she checked in to make sure I was working out and offered suggestions for in-home workouts.   The gym that she trains at is older, but the equipment is well-maintained and it is never crowded.  The gym owner is great. Everyone I've seen in the gym is nice, but totally focused on their workout. I prefer it to the chain gym near my house.

Actually it is tiny like a snap fitness or 24 fitness. It has everything you need and it is clean. Equipments feels like they bought them second hand or been in used for 20 years. They are clean and functioning though. Fee is $30 a month and there is like a $60 yearly maintenance fee. The great thing is that it is not very crowded and it opens 24 hours.

But the cost cutting part of me needed to join a gym. I started at Powerhouse Gym because of deal from one of the local sites. The gym is relatively small, but has ellipticals, treadmills, stair masters, and a hand cycle. There are weighted machines and lots of weights!! I stick to cardio and like that they are remodeling the gym. New light fixtures, televisions, and reupholstered machines to name a few. There is a smoothie/juice bar with drinks under $5. You will find most guys and some gals lifting weights in the far end of the gym. Others like myself, stick to the ellipticals and other machines for weight. There are personal trainers that you can pay to help get you in shape. They also have group fitness classes: zumba, bootcamp, kickboxing, and shadow boxing to name a few. There are 2 showers and the locker room is clean. Bring your own lock for lockers. Why Powerhouse? They are reasonably prices (no, not planet fitness priced) and I have never waited for a machine EVER. The weightlifters are pretty cool and I stay out their way as I can't and won't dead-lift 200+ lbs. (yet) There is a Kids Corner that kids can stay in while parents workout that doesn't cost extra. It's a small room with a table, chairs and cable. Not fancy, but serves a great purpose for those that need to bring the kids to get in a sweat. Ample parking and open until 1am M-Th.

I also realized that it was one more excuse that I didn't need to avoid exercising. A long time ago, I had a really good experience with a Personal Trainer, and decided that was what I needed to do. I came across Retrofit Studio reviews here on Yelp, sort of accidentally. I liked what I read from the reviews & their website. I liked the idea of a private studio too. I called Brad & set up a consultation. There is no doubt that Brad loves what he does & wants every client to be successful. He spent a lot of time listening & talking to me about realistic goals, nutrition, and what to expect. He decided to set me up with Mark, one of his trainers. So far, I have had 8 training sessions with Mark. When Brad said he was a good fit for me, he was right! My sessions are 30 minutes, 2 times a week. By the time I leave, I am a sweaty mess! Mark challenges me, makes sure I have good form, and always encouraging. If I don't do it right, I have to do it again. Every session varies to work different muscle groups, especially the areas that are difficult to target. As hard as he makes me work, I'm never too sore to exercise in between our sessions. That is important to me because I need to do my part outside of our sessions. Mark checks with me regarding my diet and what I'm doing to reach my weight loss goals between our sessions. I always have fun training with Mark even when it's really difficult. The studio itself is great. It's very clean, doesn't smell funky like a lot of gyms (ha!), and a great variety of training techniques & equipment. There are a few cardio machines for client use before or after a session. Every trainer is always encouraging clients, whether it's their client or not. What about results? I started to feel stronger right away and continue to feel that way. I'm steadily losing weight & seeing the jiggle disappear! My muffin top is shrinking! I asked my husband if he noticed any changes. The poor guy looked at me with slight fear of answering the wrong way. ha! I wanted an honest answer. I don't expect fast results, but I am curious if the changes I see are noticeable to others. He said that he has seen a big change. He said I have been a lot happier since I started training with Mark. I wasn't expecting that answer & it made me realize I haven't felt that way about getting in shape (or trying to) in a long time. It sort of made me all verklempt!
