Love love love this place!!!!! I have been coming to shop here for many many years. They always have great stuff that I love for years and years and the price is amazing. So many different hip brands all at one place saving me the trouble of having to go shopping at all different places and the products are in great shape and some lasted over a decade! The only reason that I could not be wear them more than 10 years is because my body weights fluctuated!!!! I used to love shopping at Platos closet honestly used to be some of the best workers who used to actually pick clothes that people want to wear, now I feel like they pick what they want to wear. I brought in some shoes today that I feel like people in Gainesville would actually wear. I was walking around the store and over heard someone say I wish they had more of a running shoes selection well I had a pair in my basket and guess what wasn't picked the running shoes. Also the way they are pricing clothes now is insane they gave me 8 dollars for a brand new pair of sandals and high top converses and I bet they will sale the converses for 30 dollars, it's not worth taking up there anymore I'd rather go to Sandys anymore. read more

I was confused as the room was hostile as I was waiting to leave. The "manager on duty" was already raising her voice and ordering the other "less senior" employees, talking down, and demeaning. One kind employee with short hair constantly workong politely keep apologizing as she was like, she treats us like that too. I thought the worker would unlock the door and relock it after i left. There was a key in the door, to keep more customers from coming in. afterwards after the rude "manager on shift" told me "excuse me old slow lady, we are closed and waiting on you!" I just spent quite a large sum of money and the experience was embarrassing unnecessarily and was clearly bc she was in a "a mood" it wasnt just me as other employees kept apologizing as well. Im a frequent customer and that was the rudest, pushy, superficial, fake nice and unnecessary insults for a regular customer. Then I standed outside to contact corporate and owners of the gainesville location. 20 year old young less than kind ladies need to attend manner and class school. Seriously disappointed. The tone was aggravated in her voice. I mis understood bc of a traumatic brain injury and I had surgery in my neck 30 mins before. She needs more intervention and coaching ​for appropriate social and so to speak bed sign manager. She picked at her under employees. She seems like a bossy hard to swallow "manager" that let it go to her head. Then she laughed as I was apologizing for my misunderstanding for waiting the door to be open as I didnt feel right walking up and opening a door that may have an alarm on it. Some people are kind, accommodating, and try to be nice. That manager is a bully from watching her speak to her own workers​. She tells employees rudely to do xyx instead of asking. I as an owner and former business owner am just appalled. If you heard and watched the video she would be let go. She goes "brain injury, RIGHT?" I Said may God and the universe bless you and may you have a better day and hopefully serious social training. She likes to tell people things vs asking. She shows she bosses around people not asking them kindly or even neutral-she grumpy annoyed voice TELLS them what she is ordering to do. I felt so embarrassed for the other employee. And the other customers. She was behind and spacy. ​its a terrible feeling and look and I plan to put this on gville word of mouth as this treatment to employees and customers is far from kind, appropriate, and good feeling. Retrain her. She needs coached. Also some jobs are just not a good fit for some people. She was frantic angry and all the employees and customers were uncomfortable. They say you remember the way people make you feel. She got a -10/10. -frequent customer since business was opened. I may put this on gainesville word of mouth as it was such a terrible experience, so abnormal, and SO not gainesville. I watched 3 customers leave from discomfort. Its your profits, going down from lack of respect of regular high purchasing customers and all customers. She doesn't like her job. Its all on her face and in her voice. Its just sad. I thought platos in gainesville improved. BOY WAS I WRONG. I may have aspergers autism, but socially even I know I wouldn't want that human on site. Incapable of making your experience nice and seemingly uncapable about not talking poorly about the higher ups, the franchise, and the owners. Just disappointed. Very. If she is a manager on duty she needs to come back down to reality and find compassion, class, maturity, and what we customers want is kind words. I am genuinely SHOCKED at the unprofessionalism of these employees. When I came to pick up the clothes that I had dropped off earlier today, the employees let me sit in the corner looking like an idiot for about 20 minutes and then one of them finally told me to get in line. The employee kept complaining that she didn't want to be working to the man in front of me, and then proceeded to start flirting with him. To top it all off she even held up the line while he wrote down his phone number for her. They also only took 6 of my 40 times, all of which were good quality she just said they "don't take winter clothes" (mind you my clothes were not winter clothes!!!) All that trouble and my cold groceries are now warm, I am not happy. read more

Believe the reviews! I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and decided to try this place, both with selling and buying items. The store was dirty, clothes on the floor, and the clothes they did have looked dingy and very used. I truly don't believe they looked through the items I was selling because everything was folded the same and 90% of the items were name brand dresses and jumpsuits from boutiques and Dillards but they "didn't sell the style". During a past visit to Plato's Closet a couple weeks ago, I had an uncomfortable experience with one of the employees, Caitlin. While I appreciate helpfulness, I was taken aback when she approached me and began discussing a very personal and sensitive topic without any prompting. More specifically, she began describing to me in great detail about some of her friend's concerning mental health behaviors, including self-mutilating. Having dealt with similar issues myself, I was extremely uncomfortable being told about such a triggering topic in a professional setting without being asked first. As a customer, I believe it's important for employees to maintain a professional demeanor and respect personal boundaries. This interaction left me feeling uneasy and distracted from my shopping experience, and I've been feeling unsure about returning to this establishment since. read more

I recall when they were located in a small space on 34th street. This location is a mega store compared to that! The inventory has changed to actually include some new unused items which is kind of cool. The variety of items is vast. Uptown, downtown and everything in between clothing can be found. I just went into the store to drop off clothing and it was the worst experience possible. I dropped off one basket of clothes and they told me it would be three hours and it ended up being five. when I went in they told me they didn't want several teams because they were winter clothes and skinny jeans. I had neither winter clothes or skinny jeans in my pile. the clothes on the top of the pile were completely thrown around and when I looked at the clothes on the bottom they were not touched and folded the way I brought them in showing they did not actually go through my clothes. while in the store I heard associates talking about how they were not going to go through the clothes they hadn't finished and would rather not do the work and instead lie and say they wanted nothing from the bags . there was not a single customer in the store when I arrived. I had very low expectations and was just trying to kill some time when I came in here, because the last Plato's I went to was disappointing. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the great selection of clothing. I pretty much thrift all my clothes to save money, and it was really nice to buy some trendier items as well as good quality staple items from stores like UO and Brandy without spending way too much money. It's definitely not as cheap as thrifting, but the items are for the most part fairly priced based on the quality and original cost of the item. Atmosphere: Honestly, one of the more clean and organized stores that I have been to in comparison to other Plato's Closet locations. Clothing: As a buyer, the experience is usually a good since this location is in a college town with quite a selection. It is the place to look for fast fashion and/or brand-name items for a fraction of the price... However, the brand name items aren't always in the best condition, so be mindful. As a seller, don't ask for too much... You're better off selling these items yourself on online because they might only take a handful of items and will only give you $15 for everything, if you're lucky. Service: 3/5 It's honestly a hit or miss. Most of the time, the staff is friendly, but there are some days I get a cashier who isn't so friendly. But it happens. Price: 3/5 Prices are typical for PL, but definitely not as great as a thrift store. I usually wait to purchase items when there are markdowns on their clearance (i.e. 90% on clearance when you bring your own bag) throughout the year. But if you happen to pay full price, they give you 10% off your purchase when you check-in on Facebook. Make sure you ask for a rewards card to help you earn 20% off your purchase once filled out! They give you a stamp on every $10 you spend and give an additional stamp when you don't get a bag for your purchase. read more

I love shopping here as they have a lot of unique funky things mixed in with everyday clothes. Great selection of leggings! I sell quite often and usually turn around and shop so it's a nice way to keep my wardrobe fresh and different. After reading other reviews I will agree that the staff are kind of off putting. They're not super friendly, like they've got better things to do then assist you but they're also not the worst. Would love to give this place zero stars. Told me it was a 30-45 minute wait. Saw them check my bag at the 20 minute mark. Did not receive a text so I thought it was still processing. Checked in at the hour mark. It had been done the whole time and they just never sent me a text. Mind you, I was sitting there the ENTIRE TIME. I received texts from other people while I was waiting so I know it wasn't my phone. And then they gave me $0 for my clothes I had docs and heels that I've never worn, cardigans and several other items in there that were nice clothes. I bought a purse and they did not offer me any compensation for completely wasting my time. (Don't they offer you 15% shopping that day when you trade in clothes?) Usually I really like this Plato's closet, they're quick to sort through my items that I bring in to sell, and give me a good sum of cash back. However, today I went in to sell some things, and not only was there absolutely no one there to greet me as I walked in with three heavy bags, I stood there and waited for about 5 minutes until one of the three cashiers (who was barefoot) said something. She told me they were having a "really big sale today" which made sense due to the very long line- again, with only three cashiers. I was not only disgusted by the lack of cleanliness because of her not wearing shoes, but the complete unprofessionalism of this store. I work in retail myself so I know how overwhelming it can be by a very long line, but it was obvious to me that whoever manages this store didn't properly staff for such a "big sale" on a Saturday, and allows their staff to do whatever they please. They passed up Banana Republic jeans, a brand new J. Crew skirt and a Marc Jacobs top. Instead they took the Forever 21 slut dress that I bought for $8 on a whim and never wore. Why? Honestly wish i could leave one star. I'm not really the type to complain or leave bad reviews because workers are human and may have bad days. However, in the last week I have gone 2 times to this store. The first time was over the weekend, walked in all workers were on their phones behind the counter. Acted like i was bothering them and being a problem. Asked to drop some clothing off, it was only 12pm. They said they will only take one bag. I had two medium sized bags and became annoyed. I left and thought i should come back another time when less busy, because why only drop off one bag and wait for the 2 hours they told me. I then returned on wednesday afternoon at 3pm. Same answer "only taking one bag". I live 30 minutes away so i left my bag. I then was told a 3 hour wait. I return home and am told to wait for a text. 7pm rolls around and i've heard nothing. I return to the store with no text because my ONE BAG has to be ready now. I come back and there is a line of customers waiting for check out and pick up help. Employees are on phones and finally ask if we need help. Me and another customer explained we are here to pick up with no text. The response we get is "well we are done with all our bags so it has to be done". Well i would think after 3 hours you're done. I then proceed and get a big fat total of 8$ for 8 items. I almost laughed. I waited 3 hours for 8$. I am extremely picky with the clothes i take in and try and give a wide verity as well as give name brand clothing, so it confuses me why they don't take more. Needless to say it is a waste of time, horrible customer service and you're better off just going to goodwill. read more

I love that Platos has funky clothes. I have also sold a lot of clothes there which is great that you can recycle your old clothes somewhere. Well, this is how it use to be at least.... I'm only 25 and they told me my clothes are too mature for them. They told me they only take clothes that are 6 months old and are in stores currently. One of the dresses I bought there 2 months ago... One of my dresses was a name brand designer and still had the tag on it.... One of my dresses was in the store currently. Just tell me if you have too much in stock so you guys aren't taking much.... I understand bring picky for seasons.... But telling me you only cater to teens is going to make me not want to come back. You are near the college and I know older woman enjoy shopping there as well. I'm not upset that you did not take my clothes, big whoop. It's just the things you're deciding to take now sucks. If I wanted to shop at Holister or Abercrombie.... This Plato's carries a lot of styles you see at the mall or online. They carry a variety of brands at reasonable prices. If you need an outfit for a formal or event, go to Plato's! You can probably find a dress or outfit for way cheaper without waiting for a sale. Personally, I have found stylish dresses from Tobi and other online brands for a fraction of the price. I like this location because it's bigger and better organized. Recently, they have organized their clothing by size. Obviously, I enjoy selling my gently used clothing, accessories, and books to this establishment to make some extra cash. I like how the employees tell you how long it takes for them to go through your clothes. This way you can decide whether to go run errands or shop in the store. They also do sales like their $10 sale, where you get a bag and stuff it with clothes from a particular area for only $10. Sign up to be on their email list so you know what kind of styles the store is paying top dollar for. Unfortunately, I am giving this business three stars because I had bad experiences. There have been numerous times where I came in with a bunch of clothes to sell (hoping to get some money), to walk away with only $5. Plato's buys their clothes depending on the season and the condition of clothing. Most of my clothes were "pilling" which is the reason why they didn't take them (I blame my dryer). Also, I don't agree with some of their prices. Some of the used brand name clothes they sell are ridiculously over-priced. I saw a dirty Lily Pulitzer dress in which the color was fading cost $49.99. You really have to think about the quality of the used clothing before buying it. After sifting through your clothing, you are probably wondering, "What do I do with the clothes that Plato's doesn't take?" You have the option of taking them or most thrift stores donate the unwanted clothing to charities. However, Plato's will take these clothes and give them to local thrift stores to sell in their stores! So you're not donating them, you're just contributing to someone else's business. Realistically, if you are selling your clothes to Plato's don't expect to make that much money. They buy clothes depending on the season, style, and condition of clothing. Personally, I think they are being too picky. Looking at the vast collection of jeans, crop tops, and shoes I feel like there is no set system on what they choose to keep. Buying clothes from them is a more pleasurable experience. If you are trying to sell your clothes, I would make Plato's your last resort if you want to get your money's worth. read more

I tried to sell some shoes on a Sunday and was told that they had stopped buying for the day. I can back the following Friday and was promptly assisted and told that I would have to wait 15 minutes for my buy. I ended up waiting 19 minutes and got $9.80 for a $30 pair of boots and Converse that are a few years old. No negotiating on pricing. I may return here to sell if no other option presented itself. Well I will admit I was pretty spoiled back home, in Connecticut we had 4-5 platos within a 20 mile radius of where I moved from. So when I stumbled upon this store I was excited as there doesn't seem to be much resale type shops for the young adult population. I was told if I wanted to hit up another platos I would need to drive 45 minutes to Ocala or an hour and a half to Jacksonville. The prices were comparable to what I'm used to seeing and the overall selection was good. You need to sign up for sale day alerts by email otherwise it's a hit or miss when they do have something going on. They also have punch cards that earn you a percentage off for every 20 $10 stamps. Love that this location offers swim tops for sale unlike other locations where I'm from. They have a HUGE selection of sleeveless/tank tops too. Will be back to shop!" read more

I had gone into Platos to sell some clothing at roughly 7:15, was told that they stop buying at 7. The previous night I was told they stop accepting buys at 7:30. When I mentioned that the girl I went to sell to said in the rudest way possible "Well whoever told you that is wrong and I am right" and proceeded to laugh and mention she was texting that in a group chat and pulled out her phone in front of me. I find this weird because I have worked with several Platos closet locations and all locations stop accepting buys up until closing hour which is 9 pm and 6 pm on Sundays. I thought this was very unprofessional of this girl and very rude to do so. Instead she should have accepted the buy, they were clearly not busy, I didn't see them sorting any buys and they didn't have many customers, along with having three girls behind the counter just standing around. If the girl could pull out her phone to text she could've accepted my buy. I would highly suggest management goes over a conduct with their employees on some type of professionalism. I usually love Platos, it's always a good hip and fun atmosphere there and as a first time goer at this location (I am new to Gainesville) I felt very unwelcomed. Looks like I will just stick to selling my items via resale apps or going back to my hometown Platos where we are greeted with a smile and never turned down past a certain time other than closing time. read more

i consider myself a thrift/resale store aficionado. i both can't afford and don't see a point in buying $80 jeans. as a young woman in gainesville, i notice that every female wears the same forever 21 outfits. girl 1: "oh, hey, i think i have that shirt. where did you get it?" girl 2: "the same place you got your pants, because i also have those pants." i decided to check out plato's closet. i'm from the north and was unfamiliar with the store. i'm used to value villages and buffalo exchanges, and i thought it would be similar. they do have a pretty good selection, but the markdown isn't that much. you're still paying a lot just so that your jeans can say "hollister" on them. i would have sold my soul for that in middle school, but now i have to buy my own clothes. it's not worth it. i got one or two things here -- things that are harder to find at goodwill/non-commercial thrift stores (accessories and undershirts, mainly). it's not awful, but i prefer to dig for my diamonds than buy them. also, really annoying commercials. holy jesus. read more

Sure, it's a big store but they do not cater to all sizes. I wear size 9/10 in pants & their selection is horrible. There are all of 7 or 8 pairs of jeans in that size. I also don't understand when I bring them an entire box of clothes that have only been washed about one time because I never wore them that much... And they turn down the Victoria Secret sweatpants, the American Eagle jeans, and so many other items that were rather expensive when bought... But all they took was a Walmart t shirt. I would highly recommend calling before you go as well bc every time I have gone there hours of accepting clothes change. And the teenagers behind the counter aren't exactly friendly. The problem was when I went to the dressing room, I stopped in front of the desk waiting for one of the two people to look at me. The teenage looking girl finally looked up then back down saying "go in whatever is open, bring back clothes on a hanger" without stopping what she was doing. When I got out again the two people said nothing to me so I tried to put my clothes back on the only rack beside them and the guy finally looked at me and said "I could've taken those, that's not gonna fit on there" they apparently expect their customers to mind read. I was in this store recently while visiting Gainesville from Tampa. I was amazed at how courteous and friendly all the staff were to all customers coming in. Everyone was cheerfully greeted upon walking in and if selling, the clothes were taken w a smile and explanation of the buying process given. I've been to many Plato's, all over the country, and this was by far the most welcoming I have ever seen! Will make sure and stop in again when I'm in town read more
