We stopped at Playa Amadores based purely on a drive-by view of the beach, and how much it stands out compared to other beaches nearby. We're a family with a five year-old who doesn't swim well, so the idea of a protected bay and a nice sandy beach was very appealing.
First thing to know is that there is lots of free parking. Even on the busiest day we visited, there was still outdoor parking available next to the beach (if a little further afield). There also seems to be an underground parking lot, but we never checked it out.
The beach itself is nice, with reasonably fine sand for the area. The beach is about 70% covered with lounge chairs ("hamacas") that you can rent for 4 Euro each for the day. We visited twice, but never rented a chair, and just squeezed ourselves in among the other open spaces on the sand. People were pretty mellow about making space, but I can imagine that things could get a little territorial if there had been many more people.
The water is nice and calm because of a protective jetty that encircles the beach and blocks any real waves from the ocean. This also results in a nice, gradual beach that slopes into the water. Even though it was winter, a good number of people were swimming and enjoying the water (I could only stay in for a few minutes).
Lastly, it's worth mentioning that this beach is very much a commercial enterprise... it is completely surrounded by shops and restaurants. This is a great convenience if you need a bottle of water or a tube of sunblock, but it's also a bit depressing, because none of the restaurants seem all that great, and the waiters can be a little pushy trying to get you in the door. read more
