Every first Tuesday of the month I head over to Bicicleta Verde with a group of friends to pick up…read morea bike and ride around and discover the city -- for free! Why the first Tuesday of every month? La Bicicleta Verde supports Critical Mass, the international bikers rights movement, giving both locals and tourists the opportunity to use their bicycles to join the city's cycling activists. This is by far one of the most fun (and free) activities you can do while in Santiago. After you pick up your bike (in exchange of an ID and phone number) you will go to Plaza Italia where you will meet up with hundreds of local cyclists (including baby ciclists as well as dogs! ) there will be a short speech from a representative of Furiosos Ciclistas to get you pumped up and explain the route (the route changes every month) and then you are off! Bikers join along the way, accumulating up to a couple thousand cyclists by the end. During the 1 hour journey throughout Santiago, you will sing, ring your bike bells loud, in unison, while running red lights and in general, disobeying common traffic laws. Thousands of singing cyclists not obeying traffic laws, you say? Don't worry, this outing is VERY safe and the group has a police escort at all times. Just remember to bring a bike light, ask for a helmet from the Bicicleta Verde crew and get ready for a fun night! To warm up, start practicing your Chilean "gritos" now. To get you started, here is one of the chants: "Somos caleta, andamos en bicicleta" Important: If you are feeling like you might be lost at anytime, look out for the green Bicicleta Verde bicycles (they stand out) and you know you are in good company. Also, make sure to stay in a group, as you don't want to speedily crossing a red light by yourself. As you finish, meet up with the Biciverde crew and head back to their office together.

Only problem is that it's always got a lot of people. I've never seen the place empty.

The owner of Pool Mosqueto is what makes this place really special. He runs his business as a…read moreneighborhood pool hall, and really wants his clients to learn the game and have a good time, he was a pool champion and it's obvious that he really loves what he does. Pool Mosqueto doesn't have a bar or kitchen it is literally a place made up of about 20 pool tables and eager clients wanting to have a good time. I love how the place was kept simple. There is no fancy atmosphere or specific attention to the decor, which is what makes it such a chill place to spend any evening. If you're new to pool you can also take classes with the owner and if you're lucky he'll show you some of his fun pool tricks. This place is also very reasonably priced, only about 2 mil per hour.

Signs in the park say this is the largest urban park in Latin America. I believe it, because it's…read moremassive! You could spend a day or two exploring the entire area. The park has so many trails, gardens, playgrounds and general amusements to keep you busy. There's even a zoo on the west side. Hiking all the way to the top for sunrise or sunset is magic. It'll take some time and effort but it's so worth it. Running or biking up will be your workout of the week. Bring lots of water and snacks because there's not much cover. Cars can't go up so plan for some effort!

It was inexpensive to do so and the wait wasn't too bad, considering I hear that it can get pretty busy. It only took about 15 minutes to go all the way to the top and it's a great way to catch an awesome view of the city skyline. Immediately after getting off, you have the option to begin exploring what's on the platform like The Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception and stop into souvenir shops and restaurants to grab a meal or snacks to eat along the way. We moved right onto the cable car to travel across the park from stop to stop. The cable cars were very well kept and offered a floor-to-ceiling window so that you could an amazing view of the city as you traveled across the park. My hubby and I were lucky that most of our ride across, you didn't have to share it with others. I think a helpful thing to keep in mind is that you can't backtrack with a round trip ticket, but you can get off at any stop along the way and hop back on as long as it continues to progress forward. So we kept the map with us so we could plan which stops were the most important for us to want to hit. It was a really great way to see the city and enjoy free activities throughout our day there. Would absolutely recommend it!

This is a nice little garden to explore over an hour or so. You won't need much more time. However,…read morethere is an amazing view of the city so you could enjoy that for much longer. The garden itself is cute having a few bridges, a pond, and a small bamboo walkway. There is no entry fee or ticket required for entrance to the garden. Just walk on in. You won't be able to park at the entrance. You'll have to walk up a major hill from the bottom of the overall park.
