I wanted St. Perpetua to be a great fit, but our experience was disappointing…read more The school may work well for families looking for a very traditional Catholic environment, but if strong academics are the main priority, I would look closely before assuming this is a better option than the local public schools. In our experience, the administration seemed much more focused on uniforms, skirt length, Mass, and rule-following than on whether students were actually being challenged. There are some genuinely good teachers there, and I don't want to take away from them, but overall the academics felt inconsistent. It also feels like the diocese does not invest enough in teacher pay to consistently attract and keep top talent. And unfortunately, that shows. I'll also just say that the overall leadership of the parish/school gave us an uncomfortable feeling at times. The pastor in particular gave off a strange vibe that made the environment feel less warm and welcoming than we had hoped. For what families pay, I expected St. Perpetua to feel meaningfully stronger than the public school option. For us, it didn't.

She learned many songs that she still remembers a year later. They also taught her her first meal prayer which she still leads us at dinner with. The preschool is a more intimate setting where you really feel that your child is getting his or her needs met and is not just another kid. They are affordable as well as high quality.... a rare bland. Several of the teachers have been there for many many years. They have a huge shaded and gated playground and promote plenty of outdoor playtime. Our youngest was so in love with the preschool (which he was too young to attend at the time) that he would throw tantrums every time we dropped my daughter off since he wanted to stay there too. I like that they provided a nurturing, loving, christian setting for all the kids to flourish in. They have a 2 year old class the caterpillars, a 3 year old class the butterflies, and a 4/5 year class the honeybees. They offer part time and ful ltime care.

The teachers are so great... they keep you updated on how your child is doing. I get little notes on some of the projects telling me what the kids said while making them. That said, if you can get a spot at Michelle's, you have won the jackpot. Finding quality childcare was significantly more difficult than I could have imagined when we started searching for my eldest. We tried both a facility setting and another in-home setting in Pleasant Hill before finding Michelle through a trusted friend. We knew instantly that she actually cared about our son and she went out of her way to meet him where he was and help him feel confident and comfortable in her care. Fast forward to today, our family has been with Michelle for 4+ years and she is one of the few people I would have trusted with our second baby when he was an infant and I had to go back to work. I never worried a single day knowing my kids were in her care. Kids Kastle has been our village for many years, all of the teachers are sweet, truly enjoy children, and work hard to keep things FUN. They are very knowledgeable and stay current on licensing standards and go above and beyond the guidelines. As a busy mom, I have appreciated that they were consistently on-time and extremely reliable over the years. I didn't ever have to worry about good quality meals, diapers, or other supplies. The kids always came home covered in paint (meaning they had a blast and played outside a lot!), well fed, with handfuls of projects, and they were both well prepared academically and socially for TK and Kindergarten. Michelle leads with high emotional intelligence, decades of experience in early childhood and unwavering empathy and partnership for all of the ups and downs of raising little ones. She has maintained relationships with families that she cared for many moons ago and I've witnessed those same long-term, multi-sibling relationships blossom with other families we've known during our time there too. Michelle has become more like a bonus family member for our kids (and us) and my older son still RUNS to give her hugs at every chance he gets even though he is in elementary school now. Thank you Michelle for everything you and your entire team have given our family. Our experience at Kids Kastle was so far beyond anything we could have hoped for.

My most memorable Catholic moments during the last few months were the Pilgrim's Mass at the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral (led by Archbishop Julián Barrio Barrio wearing a nice red kippah) and visiting Fatima Portugal. But perhaps the best example of religious Ying and Yang on that trip was visiting the Convent of Christ (Knights Templar Castle) and the old synagogue in Tomar during the same afternoon. Gayle's daughter-in-law regularly attends St. Mary's, although her son isn't a big fan of going to an occasional (and long) healing Mass in Spanish. So when we read on her Facebook page that they were going to Christmas Eve Mass, we offered to go along. We also went to Christmas Eve Mass at St. Cecilia (Ames Iowa) last year, but this time there would be no magical snow storm as we left. We arrived at 10 PM where we were treated to reflective readings and some pretty decent choir music (accompanied by cello, guitar, and piano). I particularly enjoyed a woman's trio singing Hallelujah. There's also a lot to admire about the architecture of St. Mary's, complete with a high vaulted ceiling, nice dark woods, good acoustics, and a main "welcoming" Jesus in the Sanctuary. And by the time the Mass started at 11 PM, this house of worship was full and festive. As it was way past my bed time, I had trouble staying awake during Mass. I enjoyed the style of the Senior Priest, but his homily didn't really inspire. However, I appreciated the warm and friendly nature of the congregation, the participative nature of the service, and that cute and smiling baby sitting right next to us. Best of all was leaving into the evening and enjoying that community Silent Night that you really only experience but once a year.
